Be it known that I, ALBERTV H. GAnss, a citizen of the Unitedstates, residing at Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Heading-' 7 Machines, of which the following is a specification.
In multiple stroke heading machines, such for instance as that shownin United States Letters Patent NO; 926,170 of June 29, 1909,
the punch holder is given an up and down holding slide in its several positions so that when a punch strikes the stock the punch cannot be forced out of alinement and thus effectimperfect work.
The objectof the invention is to provlde asimple mechanism which will effectively lock the punchholding slide in its upper and lower positions, without danger of becoming damaged or causing any part .to
break should anything happen to alter the timing or interfere with the proper action of the mechanisms.
'In the embodiment of the invention illustrated the vertically movable punch; slide is stopped in its downward movement by the contact of the end of azscrew which it carries with a fixed part on the horizontally movable ramby which the slide is borne and while in its lower position a locking bolt on the ram is caused to engage a stud inthe slide and lock the slide down. After the upper punch has performed its work the locking bolt is withdrawn and the slide lifted, being stopped in its upper position by engagement with a nuton a threaded rod that is supported by the ram. When the slide is in'itsupper position the lockingbolt is forced beneath the locking stud on the slide and holds it until after the lower HEADING-MACHINE.

At: the top of the slide is a rearwardly projecting ledge 14 and turning in this ledge is a screw 15. ,Thisscrew. is adjusted Land then fastened by the clamp nut 16 so that its lower end will engage with the upper surface 17 of a frame 22 which is carried by the ram, for stopping the slide in exact position at the lower limit of its downward movement. Extending from the ram up through an opening in the ledge at the top of the slide is a rod 18 that is provided with nuts 19 and 20. lhe nut 20 is adjusted and held by the nut 19 so as to stop the slide in exact position at the upper limit of its movement. Projecting from the back face of the slide is a lock stud 21.
Movable back and forth in an opening in the upper part of the frame 22 which is fastened to the ram is a bolt 23. Engaging this bolt is an arm 24 which projects from a rocker 25 that has a roll 26 at one end and a roll 27 at the other end. Pivoted on the top of the machine bed at one side of the ram-way is a lever 28 which has on one side a projection with inclined faces .29 and 30. This lever is thrust inwardly by pins 31 and 32- which are forced against it by leaf springs 33 and 34 that are fastened to the side of the machine bed and bear against the ends of the pins. A screw stud 35 which passes through a slot 36 in the lever into the machine bed forms a stop for limiting the inward movement of the lever.
When the ram moves forward the front roll 27 on the rocker first runs up on the inclined edge 29 of the lever and this causes the rocker to swing and draw back the looking bolt. Continued forward movement of the ram causes the front roll 27 to run down the inclined edge 30 of the lever and the rear roll 26 to run up the incline 29. This swings the rocker so as to throw the locking bolt forward. When the bolt is back the slide is shifted. If the slide is up the looking bolt passes under the locking stud 21. With the parts in these positions, as shown inl ig. 3, the slide is held locked because it is held from upward movement by the en gagement of the top of the ledge 14 with the bottom of the nut 20 and it is held from downward movement by the engagement of the upper surface of the locking bolt with the underside of the locking stud. If the slide is down, as it is every other time it is carried forward, the locking bolt passes above the locking stud and the slide is locked in this position, for as shown in Fig. 4 it is held from downward movement by the engagement of the end of the screw 15 with the surface 17 and held from upward movement by the engagement of the locking bolt with the upper surface of the locking stud. By this means the punch holding slide is rigidly locked in both positions so that it cannot yield when the punches strike the stock to perform their work.
As the rocker and bolt are carried by the ram and the lever which oscillates the rocker is on the bed the bolt must necessarily operate in conjunction with the locking stud at the proper times to lock the slide. However, as the lever which carries the inclines that oscillate the rocker, is held up to its working position by the spring thrust pins if anything should happen to prevent the bolt from properly passing into position above or below the locking stud the oscillating lever will yield so that no damage will result. Although the bolt rocker is positively oscillated for moving the bolt back and forth, as the ram reciprocates, by the lever which is mounted on the bed, the lever is free to yield at any time, and should one of the springs holding the pins up against the lever become broken or impotent the other will continue. to perform its function of keeping the lever up to such position as to properly oscillate the rocker.
The invention claimed is:
1. The combination in a heading machine of a reciprocatory ram, a reciprocatory slide carried thereby, means for limiting the downward movement of the slide, means for limiting the upward movement of the slide, a bolt carried by the ram and adapted to cooperate withsaid limiting means for locking the slide in its upper and lower positions, means for reciprocating the bolt, and yielding means arranged to hold said bolt reciprocating means in operative position.
2. The combination in a heading machine of a reciprocatory ram, a reciprocatory slide carried thereby, means for limiting the downward movement of the slide, means for limiting the upward movement of the slide, a bolt carried by the ram and adapted to engage the slide and cooperate with said limiting means for locking the slide in its upper and lower positions, a rocker for reciprocating the bolt, a lever for oscillating the rocker, and yielding means holding said lever in operative position.
3. The combination in a heading machine of a reciprocatory ram, a reciprocatory slide carried thereby, means for limiting the downward movement of the slide, means for limiting the upward movement of the slide, a bolt adapted to engage the slide and in conjunction with said limiting means lock the slide in its upper and lower positions, arocker adapted to oscillate said bolt, a wedge adapted to oscillate said rocker, pins bearing against said wedge, and springs thrusting said pins against the wedge.
