My invention relates to guides for continuous casting machines, and has for its object to provide means for holding in close metal-sealing engagement, the mold-blocks used in machines such as those shown inmy prior applications Serial No. 748,251, filed Feb. 13, 1913 and Serial No. 839,045, led May 16, 1914. The mold-blocks are connected together in two endless chains and when brought into coperating engagement form a continuous mold cavity, open at each end. Molten metal introduced at one end into the mold cavity is congealed therein to form a solid rod, which isdischarged at the other end. In my prior machine, holding down spring-pressed guides extending over a number of mold-blocks were provided, but with this arrangement when any small particle or obstruction found its way between the longitudinal horizontal joinin faces of the blocks, the whole guide was Iifted, allowing the adjacent blocks to be separated by the pressure of the molten metal with the extrusion of molten metal'into the gap, with v the resultant formation of an objectionable longitudinal fin on the side of the rod. My present invention obviates this diiiculty.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a section through apart of the machine; Fig. 2 is a plan of the guide; Fig. 3 is an elevation of Fig. 2;y Fig. 4 is a transversev section on plane 4 4 of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a vertical longitudinal section on plane 5 5 of Fig.y 2; Fig. 6 is a section on plane 6-6 of Fig. 1 some of the parts being, for clearness sake, shown in elevation; and Fig. 7 is a section showing a modification.
As shown in Fig. 1, the mold-chains are made Yup of 'a series. of mold-blocks A, B, passing around sprockets 51',I 52, and are brought into coperating engagement between the fixed guide 74, and the springpressed guide 73.
The present invention relates more particularly to the spring-pressed guide and comprises, as shown, a body portion C having at its lower portion a recess I-I, within which is mounted a sheet steel plate I-I with its ends turned up and fitted into sockets I. Bearing on the plate H are a series of springs E, set in recesses G in the bodyportion, and adjusted by bolts. D to the required tension. l
P, P are bolts screwed into the plate I-I, .the heads of the bolts resting in sockets in the body portion (see Fig. 5), whereby the plate II', while freely movable under the pressure of springs E, E, is prevented from disengagement with the body portion when the guide 73 is removed or replaced, as. a whole. The guide 73 is held in place by posts F, F, the post F at the entrance .end preferably being adjustably but unyieldngly held, while theother post F is preferably yieldingly mounted, the compression spring K pressing the pin F downward. The guide 73 may therefore yield slightly at its lower end. In practice, with a steel plate three thirty-seconds of an inch thick,
i it is found that there is sucient local yielding of the guiding surface in contact with any block, to localize the fin formation to that particular block, the preceding and succeeding' coperating blocks being none the less held insuch complete metal-sealing engagement that no fins are formed between them. f .l
My invention may obviously be applied to only one or to 'both of the guides, and both of the posts F, F may, be mounted to exert spring ressure on the backing block if desired. he guide 73 is adjusted to its position by means of wedges L, each wedge being held in adjusted position -by screws M, M, the backs of the wedges bearing against the frame of the machine. . 4.- A guide for continuous casting machines having movable mold-sections, comprising a body portion having sockets near each end thereof, a resilient metal sheet yhaving its bent ends loosely engaging said sockets, means for preventing disengagement pf said sheet from said portion comprising bolts secured to said sheet, the Shanks of said bolts being free to move in said body portion, the heads of said bolts masses adapted to engage the body portion, and a series of springs pressing against said sheet.
5. In a continuous casting machine having movable mold-sections, the combination with a series of molds of a guide, rigid holding means near one end thereof, resilient holding means near the other end of the guide,
and means for adjusting each of said holding means.v
6. ln a continuous casting machine having movable mold-sections, the combination With series of cooperating mold sections, of a rigid and an adjustably resilient guide bearing against the backs of said molds, and adjustably rigid and adjustably resilient guides bearing against opposite sides of said molds near their meeting edges.
7. ln a continuous casting machine having a series of movable mold sections, a guide comprising a resilient plate bearing against said mold sections.
8. ln a continuous casting machine having a series of movable mold sections, a guide comprising a resilient plate bearing against said mold sections, and a series of springs pressing against said plate.
