'Specification of Letterslatent. I
Application filed March 4, 1914. Serial No. 822,325. 1
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS J. KEHOE, a. citizen of the United States, and a residentof Toledo, in the county of Lucas and Stateof Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Hinge; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de' scriptionof the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, referenc being'had to the accompanying drawings? and to the characters of reference'marked thereon, which form a tion.
This invention relates to hinges and particularly to hinges of the concealed type for use on automobile doors or the like, but is not restricted to such use as it may be used in any connection for which it may be adapted or appropriate.
The object of my invention is the provision of an improved hinge of this character,.which is simple and inexpensive in its construction, and while it is capable of having the members thereof easily and quickly engaged one to the other or disengaged without the removal or inserting of screws and without injury to the parts carrying the part of this specificamembers, such members'are prevented. from accidental removal in a simple and eflicient manner, thus enhancing the practicability and commercial value thereof.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the follow-' ing detailed description thereof.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, and while, in its broader aspect, it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,.
Figure l is a perspective view of a hinge embodving my invention with the members in openposition. Fig. 2 is an outside elevation of a portion of a car body and associated door with parts broken away to disclose portions of the hinge. Fig-3 is a sectional view of a portion of the hinge, the
members standing in closed relation, and
Fig. 4 is a cross-section on the line at, a: in Fig. 3 with the members in full open position.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the door frame or casing of an automobile body, and 2 a door mounted therein. The female member of the hinge comprises, in
the present instance, a plate or bar 3, which is intended to be secured to one side wall of the door casing by screws, or in any other suitable manner, and is provided, in the present instance, with a pair of vertically spaced socket portions 4, which fit into registering recesses 5 provided therefor in the wall of the door casing. Each socket 4 is preferably formed by transversely looping thebar' or plate 3' so as to provide two vertically spaced horizontal walls or portions 4", 4 which are provided with a, set of axially alined pintle or pivot-stud receiving' openings 6, 6. The sockets 4 being formed in this manner are open at the front and both sides thereof.
The male membe of the hinge preferably comprises a hat or plate 7, adapted to be secured to a side edge of the door 2 by screws, or in any other suitable manner, and is provided'with hinge arms or projections 8 in position to be projected into the respective sockets 4 of the female member.. Each arm 8 projects from an edge of the bar 7 at right angles thereto and is provided at the upper and lower edges of its free end portion with fingers 9 which project from the arm 8 at right angles thereto and in the direction of prdjection o'f'the bar 7, thus placing the set of fingers 9 of an arm and the bar 7 one in advance of the other. The fingers 9 cooperate with the free end portion of the associated arm 8 to form a U- shaped part with the leg portions thereof suitably spaced to correspond to the vertical depth of the associated socket 4 of the female member, and each provided near its freeend with an opening 10 to register with the respective openings 6 in the upper and lower walls of the socket.
A pintle or pivot stud 11 having a shoulder 12 adjacent to one end is inserted through the registering apertures 10 and 6 of the coacting fingers 9 and socket walls 4 from the inner sides of the fingers and is yieldingly held in position by a coiled expansion spring 13, which is interposed between the registering pintles'of a set and has its opposite ends thrust against the respective shoulders 12,'the springs being prevented from lateral displacement relative to the pintles by fitting around the res ective inner end portions of the pintles, as est-shown in Fig. 3.
The springs 13 have sufiicient outward pressure against the respective pintles 11 as Patented May as, 1915.
- relation the arms 8 projectrearwardly into tive apertures.
,to hold such pintles in position and also to the door is not liable to accidental removal, or to be remdved by mischievous persons as the springs 13 are only exposed upon a full opening of the door, and only then from the inner side of theautomobile'body, and it would not be commonly understood that a removal of the springs would permit a withdrawal of the pivot pintles 11.
When the hinge members are in closed the respective sockets 4 and thesets of fingers 9 thereof stand cross-wise of the respective socket or in substantial parallelism with the rear wall thereof. Upon an opening of the hinge members the member 7 is permitted to have substantially an outward quarter swinging movement, or to swing outward until a projection or lip 14 at the inner edge of the free end portion of each finger 9 moves into abutment with the rear wall of the socket, as shown in Fig. 4:.
It is evident that this form of hinge is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in its construction and is capable of having the With this formof hingemembers thereof easily and quickly connected or disconnected as the hanging or re- 'moval of a door from its casing mayrequire. I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction, arrangement or form of the parts, as numerous modifications and. changes may be made within the scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is, A
A hinge having a socket member provided with spaced walls, aplate for securing to the edge of a door, a tongue projecting from an edge of said plate at right angles thereto and having ears projecting therefrom in the direction of projection of said plate, said ears being spaced to fit loosely between the spaced walls of the socket member, said walls and ears having axially registering pintle receiving openings,
a pair of pintles removably inserted into said openings from between said ears and having portions for limiting their outward movements, and a spring member removably positioned between the inner ends of said pintles in end thrust contact therewith to retain them in assembled relation.
. In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
