2 SHEETS-SHEET 2.
THE NORRIS PETERS (20., PHOTO-LITHO-. WASHINGTON, D. C.
SHERMAN MMIURIN, 0F ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS.
ROAD-BED.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SHERMAN MAHURIN, citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Road-Beds, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in road beds, and the object is to provide a plurality of parallel stringers, to which'ties may be connected at suitable intervals.
Mounted upon the stringers are rails, the rails, ties and stringers all being connected together by the same fastening means. The mounting of the rails upon the stringers forms a support for the rails throughout their length, and the ties can be separated or located greater distances apart than is possible with the ordinary road bed, in.
which the rails span the ties.
The invention relates to still other novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a View in top plan; Fig. 2 is a View in 'side elevation; Fig. 3 is a sectional View on the line 3-3 of Fig.1; Fig. 4 is a view in side elevation of a modified form of stringer; Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the insulating mat; and Fig. 6 is an end view thereof.
A represents the stringers, which are preferably made T-shaped. The web 1 of each stringer is: of less length than the length of thebearing surface of the stringer,
so that recesses 2, 2 are formed at the ends surface and'web, the webs of the stringers of the stringer.
The webs l of the stringers are received in theroad bed, and prevent lateralmovement of the stringer. Mounted upon the stringer are rails 3, 8. Ties 4L, 4 are preferably made' T-shaped, and each provided with a web 5, which is adapted to be received in the road bed for preventing movement of the tie. The tie is received between the ends of two adjacent stringers and in the recesses 2.,thereof.
Interposed between the upper surface of the tie and the lower side of the bearing surface of the stringer is an insulated fiber 'mat 6, the edges of which extend down along the sides of the upper surface of the 'tie 4.
Holes are formed in the stringers, ties, and

insulating mats, so that bolts 7, 7 can pass therethrough.
Rail clamps 8 are received upon the stringers which engage the base flange of the rail 3. The bolts 7 pass through the stringer and ties, and through the clamps 8, and the several parts are connected together by means of nuts 9, which have screw-threaded engagement with the bolts, thereby locking the rail in position upon the stringers, andtheties to the stringers. An
insulated washer or ring 10 is received in.
the tie through which the bolt passes, so that the bolt is insulated, from the tie, and the tie is insulated by the mat from the stringer, so that electrical signals and other mechanism can be used without any interference from the metal stringers and ties.
The heads of the bolts 7 are preferably located beneath the upper surface of the ties 4, so, that the screw-threaded ends protrude or extend through the clamps 8, so
that the nuts can be screwed down onto the bolts and thereby lock the several parts together.
In the construction set forth in Fig. 4,I have disclosed a stringer made equal to the length of two of the stringers shown in the other figures, but about midway of the length of the stringer, the web 1 is provided with a recess for the reception of the tie, so that the stringer receives additional support throughout its length, which is not necessary with the stringers of the length disclosed in Figs. 1 and 2.
I claim: a
1. The combination of a plurality of stringers and ties consisting of a bearing and ties adapted to enter the ground, the webs of the stringers being of lesslength than the bearing surfaces for forming recesses in which the ties are received for supporting the stringers, rails mounted on the stringers, and means passing through the bearing surfaces of the stringers and ties for fastening the rails thereto and lock ing the stringers and ties together.
2. The combination of a plurality of stringers and ties consisting of a bearing and ties adapted to enter the ground, the
webs of thestringers'being of less length surface and web, the webs, of the stringers ties received in the recesses of adjacent In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, stringers, and the bearing surfaces 'of v the in the presence of two Witnesses. stringers resting on the ties rails on the p r stringers, clamps engaging the rails, and SHERMAN MAHURIN' 5 means passing through the bearing surfaces Witnesses: 0f the ties and stringers and through the J. M. SHUEY,.
' clamps fer fastening them together. V v O. J. HonN Urs'r.
