specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 318, 1915.
Application filed February 29, 15912. Serial Flo. 680,755;
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, Bnn'ron l. RIKE and Jonn R. KLIN, citizens of the United States,
residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Folding Paper Vessels, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relams to holders for folding paper vessels, and particularly to that kind of paper vessels which are especially adapted for drinking purposes and known to the trade as sanitary drinking cups.
Theobject of the invention is to provide a holder into which the cups may be readily inserted and removed and which will be simple in construction and edective in use.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a top plan viewor a holder embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 22 of Fig. 1, showing a cup, partly in section, in position. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; also showing the cup in collapsed condition. Fig. i is also a section similar to Fig. 3, but showing the parts in a different position. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the sliding clamp. Fig. 6 is a bottom plan view. Fig. '2' is a view in pers ective on a reduced scale of a paper cup oi the type for which the holder is adapted.
Like parts are represented by similar characters of reference in the several views.
In the said drawings, 1 represents the base of the holder, which is in the nature of an open ring; 2 represents the rim, which is also an open ring preferably inclined outwardly; the base 1 and rim 2 being connected b arms 3, 4 and 5, preferably three in num er, of a contour to give the holder a neat and attractive appearance, one of said arms 5, being curved outwardly, as indicated at 5, to form a handle.
' Connected to the respective arms 3, 4 and 5, preferably by solderin just above the base 1, is a circular base p ate 6, which supports the holding device proper. This hol mg device consisting of a metal plate 7, one
end of which is bent downwardly apd thence back upon itself to form a prqectrondand the other end of which is bent upwardly to,
form a projection 9, which projections form finger pieces for the operator. This plate 7 is slidingly mounted in ways formed by plates 6 and 6 secured to the underside of the base plate 6, the ways being so formed that a suitable space is left between the slide and the base plate. The slide is provided with a downwardly inclined tongue 10 formed by stamping out a portion of the metal plate so as to leave an opening '12 therein. In the normal position of the device the inclined tongue lies just beneath a slotted opening 13 formed in the base plate 6.
The. paper cup which this holder is designed to receive is that ol the cone-shaped type, the particular cup shown in the drawings being one in which the walls are cemented together, but the holder will be equally applicable to other cone-shaped cups, such as illustrated in our other application filed herewith. It is usual to score and fold these cups flat for shipping purposes and in this position the edge or the folding-cup, which is. represented by a, is inserted through the opening 14 in the rim 2. The apex a of the cup isthen slipped into the slotted opening 13 of the base plate, the inclined tongue 10 causing it to assume the position shown in Fig. 8. The slide is then pushed over to the position shown in Fig. a, bending the apex of the cup at right-angles and clamping 1t firmly between the slide and the plate. After the apex of the cup is thus clamped it may readily be spread into th position shown in Fig. 2.
lnorder to assist the cup to assume the proper position in the holder there is secured to the arm 5, a spring finger 15, this finger being bent upwardly and normally standing in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. This finger is formed of flat spring metal and the outer end thereof is formed with a notch or fork 15. When the cup is inserted in the holder one of the.
folded edges is placed between this fork 15 and as the cup is forced to position the finger will exert a yielding pressure npon the same and thus assist in causing it to assumo an open position in the holder. When it is desired to remove the cup from the holder all that is necessary is'to ush on the finger piece 9 and throw the slide back to its normal position, which operation generally causes the cup to be expelled from the holder by its own resiliency and also by the action of the spring finger 15; but in any event after the slide has been pushed back to normal position, the cup may be readily removed. 1 v l The up-turned ends 8 and 9 oi the slide 7 not only act as finger pieces but also as stops to limit the movement of the slide.
Having thus described our invention, we claim:
1. in a holder for a cone-shaped paper vessel, an upper supporting rim portion having a slotted opening, a base portion, and
releasable devices for securing the apex .portion of said vessel located on said base portion.
2. In a holder for cone-shaped paper vessels, an upper rim portion having a slotted opening, a base portion, a holding device located on said base portionhaving an opening, said openings being adapted to receive the cone-shaped cup in folded position, and means in said holding device for securing the apex portion of said cup in position therein.
3. In a holder for cone-shaped paper vessels, an inclosing frame for said vessels, a base portion, having an opening to receive theapex portion of said cup and a sliding clamp adapted to clamp said apex portion clamp slidingly supported by said base, said clamp having an inclined tonguenormally standing beneath the opening in said base whereby when said slide is moved the apex of said cup will be bent at right-angles and clamped to said base.
5. In a holder for cone-shaped vessels, an inclosing frame, means at the lower end oi said frame for-clamping the apex portion of the cup, and a spring finger supported by said frame adapted to exert a pressure on said cup, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof, we have hereunto set our hands this 22nd day of February 1912,
BERTON I. BIKE.
