To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM C. OsTER- HoLM,a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Disk-Grinding Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to grinding machines, and in particular is designed for use in grinding disks for tillage and seeding machines; the object of my invention being to provide a machine that will simultaneously grind or polish the opposite surfaces of a disk while it is slowly rotated and advanced toward the grinding or polishing wheels, and means permitting the disk blanks to be readily and quickly placed in position to be ground, and to be removed when the grinding operation is completed, and mechanism for rotating and slowly feeding the disks toward and from the grinding wheels under the control of the operator. -I attain these objects by means of the mechanism illustrated by theaccompanying drawings, in which Figure represents a front elevation of a grinding machine having my invention embodied in the construction thereof; Fig. 2

The frame of the machine includes a base member 1, having mounted thereon a supplemental frame 2 provided with transversely arranged guide rails 3 upon the upper side thereof that slidably' receive head members 4 having bearing boXes 5 carried thereby, in which are journaled parallel shafts 6 having grinding wheels 7 secured thereto, and 8 represents driving pulleys secured to the middle portions of. said shafts.
9 represents bracket members secured to the supplemental frame 2 and having bell crank levers 10 pivotally connected therewith, said levers being provided with vertically arranged forked arms 11 and inwardly extending horizontal arms 12 that meet near the center of the machine and engage each other by means of a tooth 13 upon one of the arms, that is received by a notch in the adjacent arm.

17 represents a shaft journaled in bearings carried by the frame of the machine and having a clutch member 18 secured thereto, and 19 represents a worm gear wheel loosely mounted upon the shaft and deriving motion by means of a 'worm 20 secured to one end of a shaft 21 that is journaled on the frame of the machine and provided with a bevel gear member 22 at the opposite end thereof that meshes with a pinion 23 that is secured to one end of a shaft 24 that derives motion by means of a pulley 25 secured to the opposite end thereof. Worm gear wheel 19 .is provided wlth clutch teeth 26, and 27 represents a springpressed plunger carried by the clutch member 18 and controlled by the operator by 2 between the grinding wheel shafts and having a forwardly projecting arm 35 secured to the upper end thereof bymeans of a vertically arranged bolt 36 and a transverse pin 37, and 38 represents a swinging disk carrying frame provided with a transverse sleeve portion 39 at the upper end thereof that receives a pin 40 whereby the frame is pivotally suspended from the arm 35 in a manner permitting a fore and aft swinging movement thereof. The disk carrying frame 38 is provided at the upper end thereof with parallel shafts 41 that are arranged in a fore and aft direction and have the rear .ends thereof journaled in sleeve members 42 and their front ends in sleeves 43, the sleeves being received by tubular members 44 forming part of the swinging frame 38. The shafts 41 derive motion from a pinion 45 secured to the front end of a short shaft 46 engaging with gear wheels 47 secured to the rear ends of shafts 41, shaft 46 being journaled in a sleeve member 48 secured to the frame 38 and having a universal coupling member 49 secured to therear end thereof whereby it a is flexibly connected with the front end of an angular shaft 50, the rear end of said shaft 50 being telescopically received by a drivingshaft 51, the rear end of which is connected, by means of a universal coupling 52, with the front end of a shaft 53 journaled in the vertically arranged. bracket member 34 and having a driving pulley 54 secured to the rear end thereof. The sleeves 43 project'b'eyond the tubular members 44, and 55 represents vertically arranged feed wheel carrying members having sleeve portions 56 near the upper ends thereof whereby the carrying members are pivotally mounted upon the front ends of the sleeves 43 in a manner permitting a lateral swinggaging with spiral gear members 58 secured to the upper ends of vertically arranged shafts 59 that are journaled in tubular members 60 forming part of the feed wheel carrying members 55, and 61 represents spiral gear members secured to the lower ends of shafts 59 and engaging with spiral gear members 62 secured to the front ends of shafts 63, arranged in a fore and aft direction and journaled in bearings 64 carried by the lower ends of the feed wheel carrying members.
65 represents friction feed wheels secured to the shafts 63 between the bearings 64.
The disk carrying frame 38 is provided with a series of disk supporting wheels 66 that are journaled upon transverse shafts 67 arranged in spaced relation in a manner to support-a disk 68, as best shown in Fig. 4, while it is being ground, the peripheries of the wheels being provided with grooves that receive the edge of the disk. The lower end of the frame 38 is made concentric with the axis of pin 40 and is received between ways 69 formed in the supplemental frame 2, whereby the frame is held in operative position relative to the grinding wheel as it swings in a fore and aft direction about the axis thereof. The means for swinging frame 38 include a sliding head 7 0 mounted upon' the supplemental frame 2, carrying a pin 71 that is provided at .opposite ends thereof with studs 72 arranged eccentric to theaxis of the pin, and 73 represents links having the rear ends thereof connected with the stud and their front ends with the swinging'frame. Pin 71 is clamped in position by means of a clamp bolt 7 4, and it may be adjusted about the axis thereof in a manner to regulate the limit of throw of the swinging frame in opposite directions. The
head is Provided with a depending boss 75 carrying a stud 76, upon which is journaled a roller 77 that is received by a cam race 78 formed in the periphery of the drum 30, whereby, when thedrum is rotated, the

82 represents a bracket .member that is secured to the upper end of the swinging frame 38 and provided with oppositely disposed ear members 83, that are spaced: apart in the direction of the axes of thefeed wheel carrying members and provided with open forwardly projecting arms 84 at the upper end thereof that are spaced apart laterally to receive between them a bell crank member 85 that is adapted to rock about a pivot pin 86 carried by the front ends of arms 84, and having one arm thereof connected with bracket member 82 by means of a tension spring 87 and the remaining arm provided with a wedge member 88 adapted to engage with rollers 80 and cause feed wheel carryingmembers 55 to approach each other at the lower ends.
89 represents opposing studs carried by members 55 and adapted to limit a swinging movement thereof toward each other.
' 90 represents an adjustable contact screw carried by the front end of arm 35 and adapted to engage with the bell crank member 85 me manner to disengage the wedge member 88 from the rollers 80 and permit compression spring 79 to separate the lower ends of the feed wheel carrying members 55 when the frame 38 is swung forward away from the grinding wheels to a disk receiving position, as shown in Fig. 16.
In operation motion is transmitted to the operative parts of the machine through the driving pulleys 54 and 25. The initial position of the drum 30 is as shown in Figs. 13, 14 and 18, having the roller 32 carried by one of the arms 12 carried upward by the cam race 31 in a manner to swing the arms 12 to a position shown by dotted lines in Fig". 5 and to separate the grinding wheels carried by the shafts 6 that are mounted in the sliding heads 4. The roller 77 is at the forward limit of throw of the cam race 7 8, and,
through the sliding head 7 0 and link connection 73, the frame 38 is moved to the limit of its swingin a forward direction and the springs 79 have separated the friction feed wheels 65. A disk to be ground is placed in position upon the disk supporting wheels 66 and the operator, by manipulating foot treadle 29, causes the clutch mechanism carried by the shaft 17 to engage in a manner to cause drum 30 to make one complete revolution. When the drum 30 begins to revolve arms 12 are carried down by the roller 32, bringing the grinding wheels upon opposite surfaces of the disk, and simultaneously therewith the friction feed wheels are brought in contact with the same surfaces while the disk is slowly rotated, and a continued movement of the drum causes the disk carrying frame to move toward the grinding wheels during one half of the rotation of the drum and to recede therefrom during the next half, the range of movement of the disk carrying frame being sufficient to cause the disk to move across the faces of the grinding wheels a distance substantially equal to the radius of the disk.
What ll claim as being my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A disk grinding -machine having, in
combination, two opposed rotatable grinding wheels, a disk carrier movable toward and from said grinding wheels in the direction of the axes thereof, and unitary means operative simultaneously to cause said grinding wheels to move bodily toward and from each other and said carrier to approach and recede therefrom.
2. A disk grinding machine having, in combination, two opposed rotatable grinding wheels, a disk carrier movable toward and from said grinding wheels'in the direction of the axes thereof, means opera-tive simultaneously to cause said grinding wheels to move bodily toward and from each other and said carrierto approach and recede therefrom, and means carried by said carrier and'operative to rotate a disk placed thereon.
3. A- disk grinding machine having, in combination, two opposed rotatable grinding wheels, a disk carrier provided with a series of rotatable disk supportingwheels toward and from said grinding wheels in the direction of the aXesthereof, means operative simultaneously to cause said grinding wheels to move bodily toward and from each other and said carrier to approach and recede therefrom, friction wheels rotatably mounted upon said carrier and adapted to engage opposite surfaces of the disks and cause a rotative movement thereof.
5.1%. disk grinding machine having, in I combination, opposed grinding wheels, a disk carrier movable toward and from said grinding wheels, means operative to engage with and rotate a disk placed on said carrier, and meansoperative simultaneously to cause said grinding wheels to move toward and from each other and said carrier to approach and recede therefrom and said disk rotating means to engage with the disk.
6. A disk grinding machine having," in combination, two opposed rotatable grinding wheels, a springing disk carrier movable toward and from said grinding wheels, fric-' tion wheels rotatably mounted 'upon' said carrier and movable bodily toward and from opposite surfaces of a disk placed thereon, and means operative simultaneously to cause said grinding and said sfriction wheels to move bodily to engage with opposite surfaces of the disk and said carrier to approach and. recede from said grinding wheels.
7. A disk grinding machine having, in combination, a frame, two shafts journaled in bearing boxes slidably mounted upon said frame, grinding wheels secured to said shafts, means operative to move said grinding wheels toward and from each other, said means including bell crank levers pivotally mounted upon said frame, having one arm thereof adjustably connected with said bearing boxes, and a vrotatable cam journaled upon said frame and operatively connected with the remaining arms of said levers.
8. A disk grinding machine having, in combination, a frame, two shafts arranged in parallel relation, bearing boxes slidably mounted upon said frame and having said shafts j ournaled therein, grinding wheels secured to said shafts, means operative to move said grinding wheels toward and from each other, said means including bell crank levers pivotally mounted upon said frame and having one arm thereof adjustably connected with said bearing boxes, a rotatable cam journaled upon said frame and operatively connected with the remaining arms of said levers, and a clutch mechanism operative to control the rotation of said cam.
9. A disk grinding machine having, in combination, two opposed rotatable grinding wheels movable toward and from each other, a disk carrier, means for moving said carrier toward and from said grinding wheels in the direction of the axes thereof, said means including a head slidably mounted upon a fixed part of the machine, a link connection between said head and said carrier, a drum rotatably mounted upon a fixed part of the machine and provided with a peripheral cam race, a roller carried. by said head and received by said cam race, and a clutch mechanism operative to control a rotative movement'of said drum.
10. A disk grinding machine having, in combination, a frame, bearing boxes slidably mounted upon said frame, parallel shafts journaled in said bearing boxes, means for moving said shafts toward and from each other, grinding wheels securedto said shafts, a swinging disk carrier having the upper end thereof pivotally connected with a fixed part of the frame and adapted to move toward and from said grinding wheels, means for rotating a disk placed in said carrier, said means including opposed rotatable friction wheels, vertically arranged arms having their upper ends pivotally connected with said disk carrier and said friction wheels journaled upon opposite ends thereof, and means carried by said swinging disk carrier and operative in a manner to cause said friction wheels to approach each other when said carrier is moved toward said grinding wheels.

A disk grinding machine having, in combination, a frame, bearing boxes slidably grinding wheels in the direction of the axes thereof, means for rotating a disk placed in said carrier, said means including opposed rotatable friction wheels, vertically arranged arms having thev upper, ends thereof pivotally connected with said disk carrier in a manner permitting the lower ends thereof to swing in opposite directions at right angles to the axes of said grinding wheels, said friction wheels being journaled upon the lower ends of said arms, and a movable wedge carried by said disk carrier and operative in a mannerto, cause said friction wheels to approach each other when said carrier is moved toward said grinding wheels.
12. A disk grinding machine having, in combination, a frame, bearing boxes slidably mounted upon said frame, parallel shafts journaled in said bearing boxes, means controlled by a moving part of the mechanism and operative to move said shafts toward and from each other, grinding wheels se cured to said shafts, a swinging disk carrier having the upper end thereof pivotally connected with said frame in a manner permitting the lower end thereof to move toward and from said grinding wheels in the direction of the axes thereof, means for rotating a disk placed in said carrier, said means including opposed rotatable friction wheels, vertically arranged arms having the upper ends thereof pivotally connected with said disk carrier in a manner permitting the lower ends thereof toswing in opposite directions at right angles to the axes of said grinding wheels, said friction wheels being journaled upon the lower ends of said arms, a bellcrank lever pivotally mounted upon said disk carrier, having one arm thereof connected by means of a spring with said carrier, and the remaining arm provided with a wedge member, said wedge member engaging with said arms in a manner to cause said friction wheels to approach each other during a part of the swinging movement of said carrier.
13. A disk grinding machine having, in combination, a frame, bearing boxes slidably mounted upon said frame, parallel shafts journaled' in said bearing boxes, means controlled by a moving part of the mechanism and operative to move said shafts toward and from each other, grinding wheels secured to said shafts, a swinging disk carrier having the upper end thereof pivotally connected with said frame in a manner permitting the lower end thereof to move toward and from said grindin wheels in the direc tion of the axes thereoI, means for rotating a disk placed in said carrier, said means including opposed rotatable friction Wheels, vertically arranged arms having the upper ends thereof pivotallv connected with said disk carrier in a manner permitting the lower ends thereof to swing in opposite directions at right angles to the axes of said grinding wheels, said friction wheels being journaled upon the lower ends of said arms, a bell crank lever pivotally mounted upon said disk carrier, having one arm thereof connected by means of a spring with said carrier, and the remaining arm provided with a wedge member, said wedge member engaging with said arms in a manner to cause said friction wheels to approach each other during a part of the swinging movement of said carrier, said bell crank lever contacting with a fixed part of the frame structure of the machine in a manner to release said wedge member from engagement with said arms when said carrier has reached a predetermined limit of movement in one direction, and means for swinging said arms in a direction to separate said friction wheels.
14:- A grinding machine having, in combination, cooperating grinding members, a work carrier, and unitary means operative to cause simultaneously said grinding members to move toward and from each other and said carrier to approach and recede therefrom.
15. A grinding machine having, in combination, cooperating grinding members, a work carrier, and single cam means for controlling simultaneously the working movements of said grinding members and carrier.
16. A grinding machine having, in combination, cooperating grinding members, a work carrier, and single cam means for controlling simultaneously the working movements of said grinding members and carrier and to rotate work placed on said carrier.
17. A grinding machine having, in combination, cooperating grinding members, a work carrier movable toward and from said grinding members, means operative to cause simultaneously said grinding members to move toward and from each other and said carrier to approach and recede therefrom, and means to rotate work placed on said carrier.
18. A grinding machine having, in combination, cooperating grinding members, a work carrier, a controlling member, and operative connections between said controlling member, grinding members and carrier.
19. A grinding machine having, in combination, cooperating grinding members, a work carrier, means for rotating the work on said carrier, and a single member for controlling the operation of said grinding members, carrier and means.
