Description

lltilr iaira HARVEY B. VAN VOORHIS, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIAL.
Letters Patent No. 113,950, dated April 18, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN ROAD-SCRAPERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and Vmaking part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARVEY B. VAN Vooeurs, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road-Scraper; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part 4of this speciiication.
The nature of my invention consistsin the construetion and arl-rangement of a road-scraper adapted for removing dirt and stones off the road, and for filling np holes and low places, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to` the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a plan View, and
Figure 2 a side elevation of my machine.
A represents the center beam and B B the sid beams, placed a suitable distance apart, and parallel with each other. These beams are on their under sides pivoted to three cross-bars, C C, to which the Scrapers D D are firmly secured.
The cross-bars G C, with their Scrapers, are placed, one under the center and one under each end of the three beams A B B.
Cords or chains a a run diagonally across the scraper'.thns formed, their ends being iirmly attached to the corner pivots, while in the center' they pass through or around a rod, E, having a hand-wheel or lever, G, at its upper end.
This rod is placed on the center ofthe framethat is, .at the point where the center' beam A is pivoted to the center cross-bar C in fact, the rod forms this central pivot.
To the front end of the outer beam A is pivoted the tongue I, the outer end of which is, by cords or chains b b, of equal length, connected to or-braced with th front corners of the scraper.
lf the machine is adjusted so as to bring the crossbars C C at right angles withthe beams A and B B, then the tongue I will he on a line with the center beam and the draft be exactly in the center. In this position the Scrapers take the dirt oii where the road is too high and iill up any holes or gullies in the same.
By turning the wheel G the cross-bars C G, with the Scrapers, will be turned at a greater or lesser angle, as may be desired, to either side, so as to carry the dirt to whichever side it may be desired to have it.
rlhe tongue I turns on its pivot so as to bring the draft near to the side which is behind, and thus prevent the scraper from swinging around, but maintaining its proper'position.
Having thus fully described my invention,
' That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of the center beam A, side beams B B, and cross-hars G O with their Scrapers D D, said beam and cross-bars being pivcted together, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the scraper-frame A B C, cords or chains a a,'and rod E, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 20th day of October, 1870.
H. B. VAN VOORHIS.
