A. SVENDSEN.
APPARATUS FOR SMOOTHiNG BUILDING WOOD AND FOR TREATING RAW LOGS AND TRUNKS.
APPLICATION FILED AUG-7, 1913. 1 139 8 3 Patented May 11, 1915.
THE NORRIS PETERS CO..PHO1U-LITHQ. WASHINGTON, D. c
UNITED STATE PATENT @Fr ALFRED SVENDSEN, OF FREDERIOIA, DENMARK.
AEPABATUS FOB- SlvIOOTTrIIlIG BUILDING-WOOD AND FOR TREATING RAVT LOGS AND TRUNKS.
Application filed August 7, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, ALFRED SvnNDsEN, a subject of the King of Denmark, residing at 32 Prinsessegade, Fredericia, in the Kingdom of Denmark, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Smoothing Building-Wood and for Treatin Raw Logs and Trunks, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a method whereby the smoothing of building wood can be performed by mechanical means and therefore with great economy; this is a kind of operation which is generally effected manually by means of the so-called hatchet or broad-ax whereupon the smoothing is done with a long-plane. Timbers already cut roughly, as well as raw logs and trunks are operated upon with the same facility when utilizing the present invention.
The-invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the man ner of fixing a tree trunk which is to be treated. Fig. 2 represents a portable device which is controlled by hand, in side elevation. Fig. 3 is a plan view of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 shows the raising and lowering mechanism for the rails, in section.
The log or trunk 1 which is to be treated, is mounted in the usual manner upon two supporting stocks 2 (in the case of long trunks an intermediate stock may be necessary). Upon these stocks two rails 3 are provided, one on each side of the trunk, in the most suitable manner for the smoothing of the latter so that there is the least possible loss of material. For this purpose, metal bushes 4 formed with screw-threads are mounted in the cross-beams of the stocks so that the rail 3 which is supported on either side by means of angle irons 7, can be raised or lowered by means of a hand-wheel 6 provided with a screw-threaded rod 5. A device mounted upon wheels 8 running on the rails, comprises a platform 15 and a rotary plane 9 the shaft 10 of which is journaled in bearings 11 which are vertically guided and are adjustable by means of a hand-screw 12. The rotary plane is driven by an electric motor 13 and the whole device can be moved upon the rails at a suitable speed by means of the lever 14:.

"What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. Apparatus for smoothing roughly cut wood, raw logs, trunks and the like, comprising stocks for supporting the wood, screw threaded metal bushes carried by said stocks on either side of the wood, a screw threaded rod projecting through each bush, angle irons supported by the stocks on either side of said rod, rails held between said angle irons and resting upon the rods, a hand wheel for adjusting said rods, a platform adapted to be moved along said rails, fixed frames upon said platform on either side of the wood, bearings supported by said frames, a shaft journaled in said bearings, a rotary plane mounted upon said shaft, a. screw threaded rod secured to each of said bearings respectively and working in its frame, a hand wheel on each of said rods for adjusting said bearings and means for rotating said plane.
2. Apparatus for smoothing roughly cut wood, raw logs, trunks and the like, comprising stocks for supporting the wood, screw threaded metal bushes carried by said stocks on either side of the wood, a screw threaded rod projecting through each bush, angle irons supported by the stocks on either side of said rod, rails held between said angle irons and resting upon the rods, a hand wheel for adjusting each of said rods, a device adapted to be moved along the rails comprising a platform, wheels supporting said platform upon said rails, fixed frames mounted upon said platform on either side of the wood, bearings supported by said frames, a shaft journaled in said bearings, a rotary plane mounted upon said shaft, a screw threaded rod secured to each of said bearings and working in its frame, a hand wheel on each of said rods for adjusting said bearings, an electric motor for rotating said plane, and means whereby the device may be moved manually along said rails, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
