MACHINE FOR ATTACI-IING RUNNERS TO HOSIERY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 11, 1915.
Application filed October 9, 1914. Serial No. 865,958.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, BERTRAM P. HUD- SON and EARL R. HUDSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Watertown, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Attaching Runners to Hosiery; and we do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon,
to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in-
Figure 1 a top or plan view of a machine for attaching runners to hosiery constructed in accordance with our invention; Fig. 2 a front view showing the leaf in a partially raised position; and Fig. 3 a side view of the same showing, in broken lines, the position of the brushes when applying glue to the runners. Fig. 4 is a broken front View showing the leaf in its folded or closed position and applying a runner to a hose.
This invention relates to an improvement in machines for attaching runners to hosiery. Hosiery as placed upon the market usually has attached at the top runners or strips of paper containing advertising matter or sizes. These runners or strips are usually attached to the hosiery by wire staples or pins.
The object of this invention is to provide a machine by which the ends of the runners may be. coated with glue or other adhesive material and the runner folded over the upper edge of the hosiery and compressed thereon so that the runners are securely attached to the hose; and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described and particularly cited in the claims.
In carrying out the invention two glue wheels 2 and 3, are mounted upon a shaft 4, fixed in the upper ends of frames 5 and 6, which are attached to the top of a table 7. These wheels run in glue pots 8 and 9 which are also supported by frames 5 and 6. Mounted on a crossbar 10 between the frames 5 and 6 is an upright bearing post 11 to which is pivoted a lever 12 and to the upper end of an extension 13 of the post 11 is pivoted a pawl arm 14. The lever 12 is composed of two bars substantially parallel and acting together as the single lever and the outer ends of the lever 12 and arm 14 are connected by a link 15. Mounted upon a transverse pin 16, moved by the link 15, are two brush arms 17 and 18 carrying brushes 19 and 20 at their lower ends which are arranged in line with the glue wheels 2 and 3. The rear end of the pawl arm 14 carries a pawl 21 engaging with a ratchet 22 fixed to the shaft 4. The lever 12 is connected by a rod 23 with a treadle 24 below the table and in position to be conveniently moved by the operator.
At a proper place in the table 7 is an opening 25 in which a leaf 26 is entered, this leaf being hinged to the table and the position of this leaf is such that when a runner 32, as indicated by the broken lines in Fig. 1, is placed upon the table, the ends of a runner will be in line with the path of movement of the brushes. The leaf 26 is connected by a link 27 with a rocker 28 adapted to be moved by a treadle 29 so that when the treadle is depressed the leaf will be moved upward and folded down onto the top of the table. A spring 30 normally tends to hold the leaf in its downward or normal position.
In use a label or runner is placed upon the table with approximately one-half extending over the leaf 26, the treadle 24 is then depressed which moves the brushes 19 and 20 away from the glue wheels 2 and 3 and sweeps them across the ends of the runner. When the treadle 24 is released a spring 31 will cause the arm 12 to rise and carry the brushes back into contact with the glue wheels. In this upward movement of the brushes the glue wheels have been advanced slightly by the engagement of the pawl 21 with the ratchet 22. A hose 33 is then placed upon the table over the runner, the upper edge of the hose standing in line with the center of the runner, and the treadle 29 is depressed causing the leaf 26 to be moved upward lifting the outer end of the runner and turning it down upon the upper surfaces of the hose onto which it is pressed. The lines of glue at the opposite ends of the runner will be brought into position opposite each other and pressed down upon the hose so as to firmly secure the runner to the hose. On release of the treadle 29 the leaf returns to its normal position ready for another runner to be placed thereon.
We claim:
1. The combination with two glue wheels, of a pair of brushes arranged in line there with, a table, a leaf mounted in said table and means for swinging the brushes away from the glue wheels and across the end of the leaf and corresponding line on the table.
2. The combination with a table, of, a frame mounted thereon, tWo glue pots supported in said frame, a shaft supported in said frame, two glue wheels mounted on said shaft and running in said glue pots, a lever mounted in said frame, a ratchet arm also mounted in said frame, said lever and arm connected by a link, a pair of brushes moved by said link and extending into contact with said- Wheels, a table, a leaf mounted in said table, means for moving said brushes across theend of said leaf and corresponding pointon said table, and means for moving the leafand folding it downward upon the table.
3. The combination with a frame, of two glue pots mounted thereon, a horizontal shaft, two. glue Wheels. mounted on said shaft and extending into said glue pots, a ratchet fixed to said shaft, a lever and an arm mounted in said frame, the arm carrying a pawl adapted to engage with said ratchet, said arm and lever connected at their outer ends by a link, two brushes coupled with said link, and extendinginto the path of said glue wheels, a table, a leaf mounted thereon, and means for moving the brushes away from the table across the end of the leaf and corresponding point on the table, and-'means for moving the leaf upward and folding it onto the table.
In testimony whereof,we have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
