Gas-cock.
Application led August 20, 1914. Serial N o. 857,794.
-to provide a gas cock of the type stated which shall be simple and practical in its structural nature, readily operated to open position, and automatically locked in closed' position.
With the above and other objects in view,
the invention consists in the novel features of structure, relation and combination which will be particularly pointed out as the de. scription proceeds.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings Wherein:-
Figure 1 is a front Velevation ofthe gas c ock in whichthe features of 'the invention are incorporated. Fig. 2 is a top plan View thereof. Fig 3 isa side elevation thereof, partly in longitudinal section. Fig.l 4 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof s howing.`
the locking element 'in position to release the plug. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on the finger 11 1s moved from the notch 9 the line 5 5 of Fig. 4, and Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the locking key. Similar characters .of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views. f ,The gas cock shown.is'of the'usualtrning plug type and includes the casing 1 hav` lng an inlet connection 2 and an outletconnection 3. The casing-1 has -the usual tapered bore intersecting.. thev connectionsv 2 Iand 3 and provided'tolreceive aturning plug-4 of the usual;form.` The turning plug 4 has'at its upper end and beyond the cas ing 1, a head which carries an operating handle 6.
The casing 1 is provided nearits upperl '-bya stop pin 19 located under and at one end onits inner 4face with an annular. chan nel .7 which is overhung by a iiange 8, the

a notch or recess 9 communicating with the channel'7 and extending tothe upper face of the casing 1. The plug 4 is locked in closed position by a key 10 which is provided with a laterally projecting finger 11 and .below thefinger 11 with a centering extension 12. The key 10 is iittedin a recess 13 which extends to the circumferential face of thehead 5 and'I it'sextension '12 is fitted ina bore 14 arranged centrally and axially of the plug 4 andbelow the recess 13.A The /recess 13 corresponds in width to the width golf the key 10 and communicates with an enlarged recess or socket 15 extending to the upper face of the head 5 andarranged centrally and axially thereof. The key 10 carries atvits upper end an'operating knob or button 16 whichv has 'a somewhat snugv fit inthe recess 15 but is of less depth than said recess. The key 10 is urged upwardly by a suitable spring, preferably an lexpansion coil spring 17 which is arranged in v`the recess or socket l5, under the button 16 and' which bears against the base of said recess or socket and theA under face of said button. In the closed position of theplug 4, the key v10 is elevated by the spring 17 and its finger 11 engages in the notch 9, as l,shownin Fig. 3. By virtue of the engagement of the finger 11 in the key 10 of t e notch'9, the plug 4 is positively locked in its closed position. To move the plug 4 to open position, it is first necessary to depress thekey 10. For this purpose, the button 16 is pressed downwardly by the thumb and position -isprevented by a stop pin 18 which projeetsfinto'thechannel17 and whichvis engaged-by the vnger 11 when thekey comes intok itasfull,l open position. When it is de` siredito closethe plug, it is turned in the usual manner and when it reaches its closed j position, the finger 11 alines with the notch 9,-y at whichtime, the spring 17 acting on side of-thenotch- 9 andwhich is engaged by thefinger 11 when the key comes to its closed position.
its upper end an axially located recess With which` said lateral recess communicates and having an axially located bore projecting downwardly from said lateral recess, the casing having its inner face provided near its upper end With a circumferential channel and having a flange overhanging said channel and provided With a notch extend- Lieaaoa ing bctween'said channel and the upper face of the casing, a keymounted in said lateral recess for sliding movement in the direction of the axis of the casing and having a laterally projecting nger formedl to engage in said notch, the key also having below said 'finger a centering extension which engages in said bore, an operating button secured to the upper end of the key and arranged inv said axially located recess and an expansive spring also arranged in said axially located recess under said operating button and engaging the same.
In testimony whereof 'I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
