To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES A. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States,; residing at l/Vinchester, in the county of Scott, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in fence clamps and more particularly to a novel form of fence clamp whereby strand 0r woven wire and the like may be conveniently clamped for stretching or other purposes.

An object of the invention resides in the provision of a device of this character that is simple, and durable in construction, reliable and eflicient in use, and one which is composed of but few parts whereby the cost of production will be materially reduced.

A further object of the invention is to provide a wire fence clamp in which novel means are employed for detachably connecting the clamping elements thereof, said means being capable of ready adjustment to permit of convenient handling of wire of various gages.

With the above and other objects of similar nature in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claims.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device in operative position on a fence, Fig. 2 is an end view thereof, Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 4 is a front view of the clamp.

Referring now more particularly to the drawing, the device, which is designated as a whole by the numeral 10, comprises, essentially, a pair of substantially rectangular clamping bars 11 and 12, the former constituting the main or stationary element of the clamp and the latter the supplemental or movable element thereof, said element when in assembled or clamping position forming in effect an angle bar, between the parts of which the fence wires are adapted to be received and held.

The bar 11 is further provided adjacent its other edge with a longitudinally extending rod 15, the 7 ends of which are directed laterally through the bar and secured on its opposite face by the nuts 16. The purpose of this rod is to protect the face of the bar -11 from wear caused by the action of the wire during the stretching operation.

For detach ably connecting the bars 11 and 12 there are carried by the frame a plurality of outwardly extending arms 17, the free ends of which terminate in laterally directed hooks 18 adapted to engage over the bar 12 and rest in the notch 19 formed in one edge thereof.

It will thus be observed that while the bar 12 may be readily engaged with or disengaged from the bar 11, relative movement thereof longitudinally will be effectively prevented.

It will be further noted that this clamp may be used in conjunction with any of the well known stretching appliance at present employed, with devices of this kind, there being arranged centrally of the bar 11, a plate 18 having an opening 19 therein for connection with the central pull chain of such appliance, aseries of eyes or loops 20 being also arranged to each side of the plate for connection with the side chains of the stretcher.

To permit the handling of wire of lighter or heavier gage, the inner ends of the arms 17 are loosely inserted through the bar 11 and terminate in threaded portions 21 adapted to receive the taps 22, tightening of loosening of the latter serving to move the arms in the proper direction to set the bar 12 toward or away from the bar 11.

The operation of the device is readily apparent, the bar 11 being positioned transversely of the wires to be clamped and the bar 12 engaged with and swung inwardly on the hooks 18, thus bringing the clamping surface of the last named bar into engage ment with the wires and clamping the same securely in place.

By referring to Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings, it will be observed that the inner or clamping edge of the bar is in the form of a cam face 23, such construction facilitating the positioning of said bar in clamping relation with the wires.

What is claimed is:

1. A wire fence clamp comprising a pair of detachable clamping bars, arms carried by one of said bars and terminating in hooks, the other of said bars having notches ing at substantially right angles to one face thereof, hooks formed on the free ends of said arms, the other of said bars having one edge engaged with said hooks and the opposite edge thereof swung inwardly toward the v first-named bar to effect the clamping of a wire, and means for adjusting said arms to set the last-named bar toward or away from the first-named bar, to permit of the reception therebetween of wires of difl'erent gages.
