To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP L. RAYMOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spark-Arresters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in spark arresters, the object of the invention being to provide a spark arrester which is adapted for use in connection with the modern type of locomotive smoke box, and which will cause the sparks to be broken up so that they cannot escape in any appreciable size from the smoke stack.
A further object is to provide a spark arrester having its wall curved, and provide means for compelling the smoke and gases with their sparks to engage the curved surface of the spark arrester, so that the sparks will be compelled to strike the wall at a tangent and be ground into a powder by such action.
A further object is to provide in a smoke box an improved construction of table located between the exhaust nozzle at the lower end of the smoke box and the stack at the upper end of the smoke box, said table serving as a supporting means for a relatively large screen connecting the smoke stack with the table, and said table also pro viding a means for connecting the upper end of a relatively small screen which is connected to and supported upon the steam nozzle, it being understood, of course, that the table is provided with an opening registering with the screens so that there is a free passage for smoke and gases and for steam from the nozzle to the stack.
A further object is to provide in the main or relatively large screen, an improved adjustable petticoat and mounting therefor, so that the petticoat may be adjusted vertically and its length varied to suit conditions.
A further object is to provide improve ments of the character stated which facilitate the removal of the screen at anytime desired, and which permit an inspection and repair of the boiler tubes after the screen has been removed.
\Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a view in longitudinal vertical section through the smoke box of an ordinary modern type of locomotive, showing my improvements in position therein. Fig. 2 is a view in section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view in horizontal section on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the smoke stack coupling ring. Fig. 5 is a view in vertical transverse section through the main screen and the rings at the ends thereof. Figs. 6, 7, and 8, are plan views of the several rings forming a part of the main screen.
1 represents the forward end of a locomotive boiler having the ordinary tube sheet 3 located at the rear of the smoke box 4, and in which the tubes 5 are secured. This tube sheet 3 constitutes the rear wall of the smoke box, and at the front end of said smoke box, the ordinary ring 6 is located with the head 7 secured thereto and provided with the ordinary door 8 through which access may be readily had to the interior of the smoke box and the front end of the tubes.
On angle bars 9 secured to the sides of the smoke box, I secure and support my improved table 10 which extends horizontally and transversely throughout the smoke box at the desired elevation. This table 10 consists of stationary end plates 11 and a removable center plate 12, the latter supported upon bars 13 secured below plates 11 and projecting inwardly from the inner end of said plates and having openings to receive key bolts 14 which are positioned in recesses 15 in the edges of plate 1:2 and serve to securely hold the plate, yet allow the latter to The end plates 11, at their forward edges, are secured to an angle bar 16 which also supports the front edge of plate 12. The rear edges of plates 11 are secured to the lower end of a diaphragm 17 and the latter is made up in section aswill now be described.
To form the diaphragm, I provide end plates 18 which are connected by strips 19 and 20 at their upper and lower edges, so as to provide an opening 21 through which access may be readily had to the boiler tubes or to the rear of the smoke box for purposes of inspection and repair. This opening 21 is normally closed by a removable door 22 which is provided in its ends with recesses 23 to receive key bolts 24 projected through the strip 19, is secured to an angle bar 26 by key bolts 27 The angle bar 26 is secured to the upper portion of the tube sheet 3 and extends transversely and horizontally across the rear end of the smoke box. The table 10 supports my improved screen 30 which is of a wiremesh or other material having sufficientlysmall openings to prevent be secured by bolts 32 with a couplingr-ing 34. This couplingringhas a conical extension 35 adapted to project into the stack 36 and secured therein by bolts 37. The lower surface of the coupling ring 34 is in a horizontalplane so that the ring 31 may slide readily in aforwarddirection to. permitthe removal of the screen-whenever desired.
The. lower end of the screen isprovided with a channel ring 38 rigidly secured to the wire mesh of the screen and locatedinsideof a segmental clampingsleeve 39. This sleeve 39 is made preferably intwo halves: and is of a depth appreciably greater than the depth of the ring 38', so that the latter may be adjusted vertically in. the sleeve 39,- andwhen the proper adjustment is had, theSections of said'sleeve 39, are secured together by clamping bo1ts'40. This adjustment at thelower end of the basket permits the screen to be utilized in various styles of 10- comotive where there will be but slight difference in the distance between the table and the stack.
After an adjustment is once had, it is to be understood there will be no further adjustment and the improvement is only for permitting the screen to'have a slight variation in length to adapt it for the particular smoke box in which it is used.
A. relatively small or auxiliary screen 41 connects the bottom of table 10 with the steam exhaust nozzle orpot 42. This screen 41 is preferably of cylindrical form with its angle ring 43 at the upper end bearing againstthe table and its angle ring 44 at its lower end secured to a collar 45 on the upper end of the nozzle or pot 42.
It is to be understood, of course, that the table hasan opening 46, so that the exhaust steam has a free passage through both screens intothe stack to induce the necessary draft.
At the front end of the table 10, I provide a deflector 49 which is connected by hinges 50 with: end plates 11. This deflector consists of'twoplates 51 and 52, adjustable one upon the other to vary the length of the deflector. One of these plates is provided with a seriesof openings 53, and the other with a single opening54 for the reception of bolts to secure the plates at any position of ad ustinent.
The rear plate 51 is the one. that is connected by hinges 50 to plates 11, and it will be observed that this plate at its upper portion throughout its length: is bent at an an gle, so i that its downward and rearward movement is limited by contact with the angle bar 16.
To prevent-the deflector from swinging upwardly by reason of vibration of the 10- comotive,I provide dogs 56 which are connected by hinges 57 to the lower edge of plate 52, and these dogs fall by gravity into position at an approximate perpendicular to plate 52 with their ends against the smoke box head 7, so that theyserve as a positive lock. hen itis desired, these dogs may be swungoutof the way and the deflector plate raised to permit access to the smoke box below the table.
Inside-ofthe screen 30, I provide a petticoat.47 which may have its length varied by adjusting a telescoping section 48 at its upper end. This section48 is provided with a longitudinal series of openings 58, while themainportion 47 ofthe petticoat has a single opening 59 to receive a bolt 60 and secure the sections at any adjustment.
The petticoat as an entirety, is adjustable vertically inthe screen. It is provided at oppositesideswith-metal straps 61 which have single openings 62 for the reception of bolts 63. These bolts 63 are adapted tobe projected through any of a series of openings 64 in metal bars 65 secured to the inner face of the screen.
It will be noted, particularly by reference to Fig. 5, that while these bars throughout the greater portion of their length, assume the angle of the wall of the screen, at a point between their ends they are bent so that they are located in a vertical plane parallel to each other, and to the walls of the petticoat.
. At the rear of the screen, I provide a bar 66, which has an off-set portion 67 against which the wall of the petticoat bears, but the petticoat is not secured to this strap 66, and the latter serves merely as a guide for its vertical adjustment, and to hold it away from the wall of the screen.
The petticoat has a flared mouth 68 at its lower end, so that the exhaust steam is directed centrally therethrough, and it will be noted, particularly by reference to Fig. 1, that the nozzle or pot 42, petticoat 47, and stack 35 are in direct alinement to induce the desired draft.
The screen 30 is provided in its forward face with an opening 69 normally closed by a screen door 70, the structure being reinforced by metal frames 71 and 72 respectively around the opening 69 and door 70. These frames are secured together by bolts 73 which can be readily removed when access to the interior of the screen is desired.
In operation, the smoke and gases with their sparks and cinders passing through the boiler tubes 5, are deflected downwardly under the table 10 by means of the diaphragm 17. A portion of the smoke and gases will enter the lower screen 41 andpass up through the stack, but the greater portion will pass around the lower end of the deflector l9, and thence upwardly and rearwardly through the main screen 30 and through the stack.
It will be observed that with my improvements the sparks and the cinders can strike the screen at a tangent by reason of the shape of the screen, and by reason of the course which the products of combustion are compelled to take. when striking the screen at a tangent, the particles are broken, so that regardless of the draft, only the smallest particles can pass through the screen and out through the stack. 7 With devices of this kind, it is frequently desirable to remove the screen. The arrangement described facilitates this removal at any time without disturbing the other parts of the locomotive. The key bolts can be readily knocked out even while hot, and the screen can be drawn out of the smoke box and cleaned or repaired. When the screen is withdrawn, the door 22 can be removed and access had to the boiler tubes. The center plate 12 of the table 10 can be removed so that access may be had to the lower box.
While I have illustrated my improvements in connection with a particular type of smoke box with a particular type of locomotive front end, I would have it understood that by slight modification, the invention is adapted for use with practically all modern types of locomotive front ends, hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a spark arrester, the combination with a smoke box having a stack at its upper end, and an exhaust nozzle at its lower end in line with the stack, of a support in the smoke box having an opening therein in line with the nozzle and the stack, a screen, a coupling ring secured on the upper end of the screen and having an upwardly pro ecting portion fitting within and secured to the stack, a sleeve adjustable vertically in the lower end of the screen and bearing directly upon the support, and a screen connecting the top of the nozzle with the support, substantially as described.
2. In a spark arrester, the combination with a smoke box having a stack at its upper end, and an exhaust nozzle at its lower end in line with the stack, of a support in the smoke box having an opening therein in line with the nozzle and the stack, a screen, a coupling ring secured on the upper end of the screen and having an upwardly projecting portion fitting within and secured to the stack, a segmental adjustable sleeve clamped around the lower end of the screen and bearing directly upon the support, and a screen connecting the top of the nozzle with the support, substantially as described.
3. In a spark arrester, the combination with a smoke box having a stack at its upper portion of the smoke end, a horizontal table secured in the smoke box,a screen connecting the stack and the table, a ring fixed to the lower end of the screen, and a sleeve adjustable on the ring and supporting the screen on the table, substantially as described.
4. In a spark arrester, the combination with a smoke box having a stack at its upper end, a horizontal table secured in the smoke box, a screen connecting the stack and the table, a ring secured to the lower end of the screen, and a segmental sleeve clamped around the ring and supporting the screen upon the table, substantially as described.

8. In a spark arrester, the combination with a smoke box having a stack at its upper end, a horizontal table secured in the smoke box, ascreen' connectingthe stack and the table, a ring secured to the lower end of the screen, a segmental sleeve clamped around the ring and supporting the screen upon the table, a coupling ring having an upwardly projecting portion located within and se cured to the stack, and said screen at its upper end havinga ring adapted to be secured tosaid-coupling ring,-substantially as described.
9. In a spark arrester, the combination with a smoke box havinga stackat its upper end, a horizontal table secured in the smoke box, a screen-connecting the stack and the table, a channel ring secured to the lower end of the screen, asegmentalsleeve clamped around the outer portionof said channel ring and supporting the screen upon the table, a coupling ring having an upwardly projecting portion located within and secured to the stack, and said screen at its upper end having a ringadapted to be secured-tosaid couplingring, substantially as described. 10. In a spark arrester, the combination with a smoke box having astack'at its upper end,-and an exhaust nozzle at its lower end in line with the stack, a" horizontal table-secured in the smoke box having an opening therein in line with the nozzle and the stack, a screen supported on the table and connected to the stack, saidscreen of general truncated conical formhaving a flattened rear face, and a second screen con nectingthe bottom of the table with the nozzle, substantially as described.
11. In a spark arrester, the combination with a smoke box having a stack at its upper end, and an exhaust nozzle at its lower end in line with the stack, of a horizontal table secured in the smoke box having anopening therein in line with the nozzle and stack, a screen, a coupling device at the upper end of the screen projecting into the stack, anda coupling device at the lower end of the screen adjustable vertically on the screen and securing the same to the table, substantially as described.
12. In a spark arrester, the combination with a smoke box having a stack at its upper end, and an exhaust nozzle at itslower end in line with the stack, of a horizontal table secured in the smoke box having an opening therein in line with the nozzle and stack, a screen, a coupling device at the upper end ofthe screen projecting into the stack, a coupling device at the lower end of the screen adjustable vertically on the screen and securing the same to the table, said last-mentioned coupling device comprising a segmental'ring, substantially as described.
13. Ina spark arrester, the combination with a smoke box having a stack at its upper end, and an exhaust nozzle at its lower end in line witlrthe stack, a horizontal table secured in the smoke box having an opening therein in line with the nozzle and the stack, a screen supported on the table and connected to the stack, bars secured inside the screen and having parallel vertical portions, said vertical portions having a series of openings therein, a petticoat in the screen, straps secured to the sides of the petticoat, and bolts projected through said straps and through any of said series of openings to secure the'petticoat at various positions of adjustment, substantially as described.
14'. In a spark arrester, the combination with a smoke box having a stack at its upper end, and an exhaust nozzle at its lower end in line with the stack, a horizontal table secured in the smoke box having an opening therein in line with the nozzle and the stack, a screen supported on the table and connected to the stack, three vertically positioned bars secured in the screen, all of said bars having oil-set portions, a petticoat having means at opposite sides for attachment to two of'said bars, and movable against the off-set portion of the third of said bars, substantially as described.
15.
