CUTTER-HEAD.

Be it known that I, EDWARD H. WAUGH, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutter-Heads, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has more particular reference to cutter heads of the type wherein companion cutters of the matcher type are employed, and it has for one of its objects to provide a construction on which the cutters can be rigidly held.
The invention has for a further object to provide means for adjustably supporting a cutter on thehead in a novel manner.
lVith the above and other objects, in view, to be referred to as my description progresses, the invention resides in the features of construction, arrangements and combinations of parts hereinafter described and succinctly defined in my annexed claims.
In the accompanying drawing, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout: Figure 1 is a plan of a cutter head, a portion of one end support being broken away. Fig. 2 is aside elevation with parts broken away. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal section on reduced scale, and Fig. 4 is a detail, illustrating more particularly the cutter holder.
In constructing a cutter head in accordance with my invention I provide a plurality of supports which are annular in form so as to receive or support a number of cutters. These supports can however, be modified in form, and further the term cutter as hereinafter employed is intended as a generic term comprehending any suitable tools or mediums for working stock to a desired form or condition.
Referring to the drawing by numerals of reference 1 and 2 indicate end or outer supports, and 3 an intermediate support, the said supports 1 and 3 which are annular in form constituting flange extensions of a hub 4. Support 2 consists of a disk having a central aperture 2 registering with the bore of hub 4c.
Seated in seats 5, formed in the opposing faces of supports 2 and 3 are cutters 6, these being in the form of double jointing cutters and serving as sustaining spacers for the supports, and being firmly clamped Specification of Letters Patent.

Clamping members 7 are conveniently in the form of bolts which are engaged in apertures of the supports 2 and 3, as shown, with their heads countersunk in support 2 and their threaded end portions, which proj ect through support 3, provided with nuts, as 8.
Between each pair of cutters 6 are cutters 9 and 10 which have an upward and downward inclination, respectively, in the direction of rotation of the head. These cutters 9 and 10 which, as shown, are in the form of fiat blades or bits adapted for working a tongue on the stock intermediate the cutting circles of the joining cutters 6, are mounted in holders 11, which latter can be adjusted crosswise of the space between cut ters 2 and 3, in a manner to be described.
Holders 11 are slidably engaged in substantially circular seats or apertures 11, 11 of supports 2 and 3, respectively, the said seats or apertures 11 having their inner end portions of greater diameter than their outer end portions and extending through the edge of the support in concentric relation to the related seats 11 of support 3. The holders 11 which are substantially cylindrical in form have their outer end portions provided with studs 12 which are guided in the reduced outer end portions of seats 11, by which construction, which is durable and permits of axial adjustment of the cutter holders, I am enabled to bring said cutter holders to the very edge of the cutter head, thereby overcoming undue projection of the cutters from their holders.
Reference numeral 11 indicates keys on cutter holders 11, the same being slidably received in grooves or ways of support 3 for preventing rotary movement of the holders.
Cutters 9 and 10 are mounted in inclined seats of holders 11 and engaged by clamping screws 13.
Clamping screws 13 which are threaded in the holders and project from one end thereof, have their projecting end portions freely engaged in apertures 1 of support 1 for sliding in the latter. Nuts 14 have threaded engagement with screws 13 and impinge the opposite faces of support 1 for locking the cutter holders against axial adjustment.
In the operation of the construction just de e i ed e damping screw .13 is first adjusted to firmly clamp the related cutter 9 or 10, then nuts 14 are adjusted to clamp the holder with its cutter in a predetermined set position intermediate the supports 2 and 3.
As shown, the inclined seats of holders 11 are in the form of through slots which register with the threaded openings which normally receive clamping screws 13. By forming the seats in this manner, I am enabled to employ reversible cutters, that is, cutters having bits on each end portion. I
- also preferably provide the cutters 6 with bits at each end, as shown.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America, is
1. In a cutter head, relatively adjustable spaced clamping supports, a cutter holder adjustably mounted on both and free of the same, and means mounted on one of the supports and engaged with the holder for adjusting it irrespective of the relative adjustment and position of the supports.
2. In a cutter head, relatively adjustable spaced clamping supports, one of which has spaced flanges, clamping bolts connecting the supports for drawing them toward each other and passing through one of the flanges, a cutter holder adjustably mounted on both supports and movable transversely thereof, and means mounted on the other flange of said support and connected to the holder for adjusting it irrespective of the relatiye f adjustment and position of the supports.
3. In a cutter head, the combination with a support, of a cutter holder movably mounted thereon and having a cutter socket and a screw for clamping a cutter in the socket and adjusting and holding the cutter holder on the support, said screw being threaded in the holder and having its end entering the socket to abut against the cutter, and nuts adjustably threaded on the screw and engaging opposite portions of the support.
4. In a cutter head, the combination with a support having a flange, of a cutter holder slidably mounted on the support transversely thereof and having a cutter socket, a screw slidably passing through the flange and having a threaded engagement with the cutter holder, said screw having an end entering the socket to engage and clamp a cutter therein, and nuts adjustably threaded on the screw and engaging opposite sides of the flange for adjusting the cutter holder and holding it in adjusted relation.
5. In a cutter head, spaced supports, one having a socket provided with a reduced portion, a cutter holder mounted on and slidable transversely of the supports, said holder having a reduced stud slidably engaged in the reduced portion of the socket of said support, and adjusting means for the holder mounted on the other support and engaged with the said cutter holder.
