To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osErH D. SAncnN'r, a citizen of the United States residing in the city and county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to looks, and more particularly to extensible cylinder locks.
Extensible cylinder locks have been devised in which the main part of the lock, having substantially the form of the ordinary rim cylinder, and provided with the usual key rod extending rearwardly from the key. plug, is adjustably connected by means of the key rod with the bit, or rollback of a so-called cylinder extension adjustably secured to the rear end portion of the cylinder lock proper. The key rod slidably engages an opening in the bit or rollback of the cylinder extension. The chief drawback of this construction arises from the fact that if a fairly moderate range of adjustment is needed, a rather long key rod must be furnished, which has to be cut ofi' at the proper point in case the lock when mounted is not extended to the maximum length.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide an extensible cylinder lock in which a considerable range of adjustment may be had without the necessity of altering the length of the key rod to suit the different adjustments.
It is also aimed to improve the general construction and operation of devices of the class to which the invention relates.
To these and other ends, the invention consists in the novel features and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a cylinder lock embodying my improvements, showing it adjusted to the minimum length; Fig. 2 is a view from the opposite side showing the lock adjusted for a door of greater thickness; Fig. 3 is a rear end elevation of Fig. 1; Fig. 1 is a section on line 44 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a section of line 55 of Fig. 2; Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 5, showing the lock adjusted to the maximum length; Fig. 7 is a section on line 7-7 of Fig. 3; Fig. 8 comprises detail perspective views of the telescopic members carried by the cylinder extension; and Fig. 9 is a section on line 99 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing, A denotes generally the main part of the cylinder lock, and B denotes generally the extension at the rear end thereof, which is adjustable toward and away from the part A. The latter part comprises the usual face plate or escutcheon 10, the case 11 for the key plug 12, the pin tumbler extension 13, in which the pin tumblers (not shown) are housed, and the lugs 14:, 15 projecting laterally from the pin tumblerextension. The extension B comprises an exteriorly threaded disk 16 rigidly carrying at one side a forwardly projecting smooth guide pin 17, passing through a guide opening in the lug 14. At the other side of the disk 16 the same carries a rotatable adjusting screw 18 engaging a correspondingly threaded opening in the lug 15. The head 19 of the screw 18 is located at the rear of the disk 16, and is provided with a groove for a screw driver; hence, as the screw is held from lengthwise movement in the disk 16 by a pin 20. or by other suitable means, the cvlinder extension will be advanced toward and retracted from the main part of the lock as the screw is turned in one or the other direction.
At the rear end of the key plug, the same is connected in the usual manner with a short kev rod 21 which is adjustably connected with a bit or rollback 22 on the cylinder extension in the manner to be presently described. This key rod 21 passes through the usual washer 23, applied to the rear end of the key plug by small screws 24. The rear end portion of the casing 11 is cut off or rabbeted, as shown at 25, to present a portion of reduced diameter-adapted to fit an opening, bore or socket 26 in the cylinder extension, as shown at Fig. 4.
Fitted within the bore or socket 526 of the cylinder extension is a hollow cylindrical member or cup 27 which is prevented from falling out of the open rear end of the bore or socket by an inwardly projecting shoulder 28, on the disk 16. At its rear portion the member 27 is provided with rearwardly projecting lugs 29 which pass through an opening 30 in the bit or rollback 22 and are clenched over the edges of such opening, as shown in Fig. 7, so as to secure the bit or rollback rigidly to said member 27. In this manner, the bit or rollback is rotatably supported at the rear face of the'cylinder extension, the member 27 being free to turn in the bore or socket 26. At the forward end of the member 27 the latter is provided with an inwardly projecting flange 31 defining a polygonal opening 32 which is adapted to fit and conform to the polygonal body portion 33 of a telescoping cup-like member 34 mounted on the rear end of the key rod 21. In the form shown the body portion 33 of the member 34 is square in cross-section, and of course the opening 32 of member 27 is correspondingly shaped, but the particular polygonal cross-section is immaterial so long as the cup-member 34 is non-rotatably locked in the member 27. The member 34 is free to slide axially within the member 27, and it is provided atits rear extremity with an outwardly directed flange 35 adapted to abut the flange 31 and thereby form a stop to limit the separation of the telescoping members 27 3.4. At its forward end, it is provided with a polygonal opening 36 closely fitting the polygonal (square) key rod 31 and thereby permitting the member 34 to telescope the key rod. The opening 36 is defined by an inwardly projecting flange 37 adapted to be abutted by the head of a screw 38 screwed .into the rear end of the key rod so as to hold the member 34 permanently on the rear end of the key rod in the same way in which the flange 31 of the cupshaped member 27 and the. flange 35 of the cup-shaped member 34 maintain said members in telescopic relation to each other. Thus, by the construction described, the member 27 telescopes the member 34, and the latter in turn telescopes the key rod so that a considerable range of adjustment may be had with a key rodof minimum length.
Fig. 4 shows the arrangement of the parts when the lock is adjusted to the minimum length. When a longer lock is desired, the screw 18 is .turned to separate the parts A and B, and the key rod is free to slide relative to the member 34 into the position shown in Fig. 5. Or the same adjustment might be obtained by the sliding movement of the cup 34 in the cup 27 This depends on the friction between the several parts and in practice there will usually be both a slidable displacement between the key rod and cup 34, and a slidable displacement between the latter and the cup 27. Of course, when the adjusting screw 18 is turned to move the parts beyond the intermediate adjustment shown in Fig. 5 to the full length adjustment shown in-Fig. 6, the cup 34 will slide rearwardly as far ,as'possible on the key rod, and the cup 27 in turn will slide rearwardly as far as possible on the cup 34. WVhenever the key plug 12 is turned by the key the movement of the plug will be transmitted to the bit or rollback 22 owing to the fact that the cup 34 is nonrotatably locked to the key rod, while the cup 27 is non-rotatably locked to the'cup 34 and to the bit or rollback. Thus, the key plug is properly connected with the bit or rollback irrespective of the adjustment of the cylinder extension.
By mounting the nested cup- shaped members 27, 34 in the socket or bore of the cylinder extension, the construction is made very neat and compact, and the cylinder extension carries the telescopic devices which permit a long rearward adjustment of the extension with the employment of a short rod, or other coupling member. It will be noted from Figs. 4 and 7 that when the lock is in the shortest adjustment the casing 11 and the washer 23 extend into the bore or socket 26 to such an extent that the washer is in close proximity to the telescopic adjusting members. As the lock is lengthened the casing 11 is pulled out of the bore o-r socket 26, thereby permitting the telescopic member 34 to slide forwardly in the bore or socket of the cylinder extension, as shown in Fig. 6. v
In the broad aspects of my invention, I
do not limit myself to any particular form of the telescoping members carried by the cylinder extension, nor do I limit myselfto any particular number of such members. Various changes in these and other respects may be adopted within the scope of my invention as defined in the claims.
What I claim is:
1. Inan extensible cylinder lock, the combination with a main part having a rotary key plug and an extension having a rotary rollback or bit, of a rod connected to the rearend of the key plug, and a member connecting said rodwith said rollback, slidably mounted in said extension; substantially as described.
2. In an extensible cylinder lock, the combination with a main part having .a key plug and an extension having a movable bit or rollback, of a rod secured to the key plug, a member slidable on the rod and slidable in the extension, and means for connecting said member with said bit or rollback; subkey rod extending rearwardly from the key plug in line with said bore, a cup-shaped member slidable on but non-rotatably engaged with said key rod, a rollback mounted rotatably on said extension, and means for connecting said cup-shaped member non-rotatably with said rollback; substantially as described.
5. In an extensible cylinder lock, the combination with a main part and the extension, of a plurality of telescoping members carried by one of said parts, and means for connecting one of said members with the other part; substantially as described.
6. In an extensible cylinder lock, the combination with the main part and the extene sion, of a plurality of telescoping members carried by the extension, and means for connecting one of said members with the main part of thelock; substantially as described.
' 7 In an extensible cylinder lock, the combination with the main part and the extension, of a plurality of telescoping cupshaped members carried by the extension, and means for connecting one of said members with the main part of the lock; substantially as described.
8. In an extensible cylinder lock, the combination with the main part having a key plug and key rod, and the extension having a rotary rollback, of a plurality of telescoping members carried by the extension, one of said members connected to said rollback and one of said members connected with said key rod; substantially as described.
9. In an extensible cylinder lock, the combination with the main part having a key plug and a key rod, of an extension, a rollback on said extension, a member slidable on the key rod and slidable relative to the (lopies of this patent may be obtained for extension, and means for connecting said member with said rollback; substantially as described. 10. As an article of manufacture, a cylinder lock extension having a plurality of telescopic members; substantially as described.
11. As an article of manufacture, a cylinder lock extension having a plurality of telescopic members, and a rollback carried by one of said members; substantially as described.
12. As an article of manufacture, a cylinder lock extension having a plurality of telescopic members, and a rollback carried by one of said members, another of said telescopic members having a polygonal opening to engage a key rod; substantially as described.
13. In an extensible cylinder lock, the combination with a main part having a key plug and the extension having. a rollback, of members telescoping each other and con-- necting the key plug with the rollback; substantially as described.
14. In an extensible cylinder lock, the combination with the main part having a key plug and the extension having a rollback, of a sliding member on the extension non-rotatably connected with the rollback, and means for connecting the key plug with said member; substantially as described.
