OHARLESP.KIMBALL OF PORTLAND,MAIN E Leeters Patent No. 113,775, dated April 18, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHIFTING TOPS FOR BASKET-PHAETONS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the, same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES P. KIMBALL, of the city of Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Shifting-Top for Basket-Phaetons; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, in which-- Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the side of the body and of the shifting-top.
Figure 2 is a top view of rail with car attached.
Basket-phaetons have heretofore been built without tops, and have hadno protection against sun or rain, except that afforded by an umbrella secured by its upright stafi" to thefi'ont'orback of the phaeton-body.
My invention relates to a top for this class of carriages, removable like the umbrella, and, at the same time, more firmly secured, more ornamental, and a better protection to the occupants.
A A is the bottom or body of the phaeton.
B, the rail extending around the seat.
D is the top. v
This top is supported by four posts, E E, by means of which posts it is secured and attached to the body. These posts are attached to the top of the carriage in the usual manner, while their lower extremities terminate in a stud of a size to lit the socket G of the ear 0. (See fig. 2.)
The ears 0 O are attached to the outer edge of the rail and extend a short distance beyond it. They are placed two in front and one at each side of the seat, so as to receive the ends of the posts E. The studs are passed through the sockets G and secured by the nuts F.
To remove the top, therefore, all that is necessary to be done is to unscrew the four nuts and remove the posts from the sockets.
I do not claim, broadly or generally, a shifting. top,
scribed.
GHARLES P. KIMBALL.
