STAIR-GARIPE'I FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Iatent.
Patented Apr. 27, 1915.
AppIication filed June 8, 1914. Serial No. 843,852.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY G. SCHRAMM, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stair-Carpet Fasteners, 0 which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in stair carpet fasteners for securing a carpet in position upon stairs without the necessity of driving tacks and the like through the carpet.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which will be constructed in such manner that it may be readily secured over the carpet at the inner edge of the step Where the fastener will be out of the way, yet serve to hold the carpet in place.
Another object of the invention is to provide a fastener of this character which will be especially adapted for use in Securing a carpet in position over steps, such as porch steps and will be of extremely simple and cheap construction and formed in such manner that it may be readily applied or removed, as desired, and when in position will be locked against movement.
The invention has for a still further object to generally improve and simplify the construction and operation of devices of this character and form the same in such manmay be readily adjusted accordmg to the width of the Steps and will be formed in such manner that they may be readily employed without danger of injury to the steps or the carpet.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in cer tain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a plurality of steps, with the carpet secured in position upon the same by my improved fasteners, Fig. 2 is a detail elevation of one of the fasteners removed, with the parts thereof slightly enlarged, Fig. 8 is a detail view of one section of one of the fasteners, Fig. 4 is a detail cross sectional view on the line H of Fig. 2, Fig. 5 is a fragmentary side elevation of the stairs with the carpet secured in position, showing an end view 0 one of the fasteners, Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing a modified form of fasteners, Fig. 7 is a fragmentary side elevation of the stairs, looking at the end of the fasteners to show the manner in which said fasteners are secured in position, Fig. 8 is a detail transverse section on the line 88 of Fig. 7, Fig. 9 is an enlarged transverse section through the center of one of the fasteners, and Fig. 10 is a detail longitudinal section on the line 10-10 of Fig. 9.
Referring in detail to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates the stairs of a flight. having a carpet 2 positioned upon the same and secured in position by my improve fastener.
Each fastener comprises two sections 3 and 4:, which are preferably formed of wire or other suitable material, and have their outer ends 5 and 6 respectively turned back to form hooks for engagement around the overlapping ends of the stairs 1, it being understood that the stairs for which this form of fastener is employed are of the overlapping type, generally formed of stone, concrete or the like.
The section 3 has series of teeth 7 formed thereon for engagement by the loop 8 of the section 4: through which the section 3 is engaged and adapted for sliding movement to adjust the length of the fastener. It will be understood that the series of teeth 7 are formed upon the section 3 by crimping the wire while the loops 8 are formed by looping the wire from which the section 4: is formed, preferably at the inner end of said section 4: and a spaced distance from said inner end. It will be readily seen that the loops 8 serve to guide the sections 3 an 4 upon one another and said sections are further assisted in guiding one another by forming a smaller loop 9 at the inner end of the section 3 and engaging said loop around the section 4. It will also be seen that both sections slide upon one another and owing to the teeth 7 with the loop 8 engaged therewith after the fastener has been properly placed in position at the inner edge of the step, the sections 3 and 1 may be forced inwardly to properly engage the turned ends 5 and 6 thereof back of the steps 1 to prevent withdrawal of the fastener an prevent longitudinal movement thereof, while independent longitudinal movement extending at right of the sections '3 and 4 is prevented by the loops 8 and teeth 7, the loops 8 automatically engaging behind the proper teeth 7 as the fastener is adapted to secure the ends 5 and 6 against movement. It will also be apparent that any lateral strain upon the central or interlocking portions of the sec tions 3 and 4 of the fastener by a slight movement of or pull upon the carpet or step covering 2, will serve to tighten the loops 8 behind the teeth 7 and also tighten the ends 5. and 6 of the sections 3 and 4 respectively against the overlapping portions of the steps 1. j
In Figs. 6 to 10 inclusive, I have shown a modified form of the invention especially adapted for use in securing a step covering in position upon steps 11 of a type generally constructed of Wood or similar material for porches and indoor stair cases having their opposite sides spaced from walls. In this form of fastener are included the sections 12 and 13 which have their innerends slidably engaged in a binding sleeve 14, said inner ends of the sections 12 and 13 being of substantially semicircular form in cross section with their fiat faces serrated and engaged against one another to prevent casual independent longitudinal .movement of said sections. 12 and 13 and thereby permit disengagement of the-stair step. The reduced inner ends of said sections 12 and 13, which are indicated by the numerals 15 and 16 respectively, are completely inolosed at all times within the sleeve 14, thereby preventing independent lateral movement of the reduced inner ends 15 and 16 of the sections 12 and 13 to permit said ends to slide the sleeve 14 and thereby positively prevent the movement of the sections 12 and 13 with in the sleeve 14. ovement of the sleeve 14 in the opposite directionupon ends 15' and 16 of the sections 12 and 13 will permit movementof the sections 12 and 13 therein or withdrawal of said sections entirely from the sleeve 14. In this modified form, the sections 12 and 13 With right angled free ends 17 and 18 which have their extremities 19 and-20 respectively the bearing cups 21 which are secured to'the outer faces of the stair stringers 22 by suit able securing members passed through the sections for mg. positioned upon are preferably provided,
angles for engagement in insis /o ears 23 of said bearing cups 21,.which will prevent the fastener from drawing away from the inner edgesof the strips 11, as will be readily understood.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and illustrated, it will be understood that minor changes'in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of theadvantages thereof.
7 Having is claimed as new, is:
1. A device of the class described comprising the combination with a stair covering; of a fastener formed in overlapping transverse engagement with the stair covering, the outer ends of said sections being formed for engagement over the opposite ends of the steps upon which the stair covering is positioned, and'means for locking the inner ends of said sections the steps along the inner edge thereof and engaged over the covering, the opposite ends of the fastener being engaged over the opposite ends of the step, said fastener being adjustable longitudinally, and means for re taining the fastener vin adjusted position and preventing disengagement ofthe same.
3. A device of'the I V prising the combination with 'a stair coverfasteners for fastening the covering in positlon, said fasteners being formed in sections ends'extended over the I opposite ends of the steps and turned back having their outer to secure'said sections in position and prevent removal of the same, the inner ends of said sections being slidably engaged with one another to; adjust the length of the fasteners, the mam portions of the sections of said? fasteners astener together and preventing independent longitudinal movement of said fastener. Intestimony whereof I afliX my signature presence of two witnesses. i
