UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMAN MAX MAINE, OF ESTHERVILLE, IOWA.
COMBINED SOUND-BOX AND BRIDGE.
Application filed June 17, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HERMAN MAX MAINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Estherville, in the county of Emmet and State of Iowa, have invented new and use ful Improvements in Combined Sound- Boxes and Bridges, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to music, and more particularly to instruments for producing music, and has for an object to provide a combined sound box and bridge.
The invention embodies, among other features, a sound box particularly adapted for use in connection with pianos and the like, the sound box being so arranged and constructed that the bridge carried thereby will readily support the pressure of the strings which are strung across the bridge.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view taken through a musical instrument, showing the manner of using the sound box and bridge; and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the sound box and bridge removed from the instrument.
Referring more particularly to the views, I disclose a key-board percussion musical instrument 9, constructed in the nature of a piano or the like and which has arranged therein a sound box 10 of a somewhat triangular shape in cross section, the said sound box consisting of rim sections-11 and 12 arranged in parallel relation and connected by a longitudinally extending bottom plate 13 having its edges lying in longitudinal slots 14 formed in the said rim sections. Top plates 15 and 16 are arranged in an inclined position relatively to the plate 13, with the lower edges of theplates 15 and 16 received in longitudinal slots 17 formed in the respective rim sections 11 and 12, the upper edges of the said plates 15 Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 2'7, 1915.
Serial No. 774,197.
and 16 being received in a base 18 of a longitudinally extending bridge 19 adapted to have strings 20 projecting across the bridge.
Posts 21 are centrally supported on the plate 13 and project perpendicularly to engage the base 18 of the bridge 19 as shown, said posts constituting efiective supporting members for the bridge.
It will be understood that various departures can be made from the disclosures herein without departing from the spirit of the invention, and that the scope of the invention is defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A sound box for a stringed musical instrument comprising a plurality of similar rim-sections, a bottom plate supported on the rim sections, a bridge provided with a plurality of longitudinal slots, and relatively inclined top plates having connection with the rim sections and having edges thereof fitting into the slots of the bridge.
2. A sound box for a stringed musical instrument comprising rim sections, each provided with a pair of longitudinal slots, a bottom plate having opposite edges fitting into one of the slots of each rim section, a bridge provided with longitudinal slots, and top plates, one fitting into the other slot of each rim section, with portions of the plates fitting into the slots in the said bridge.
3. A sound box for a stringed musical instrument comprising similar parallel rim sections and a bridge lying between and slightly above the rim sections, a bottom plate connecting the rim sections, relatively inclined top plates connecting with the rim sections and with the bridge, and posts on the bottom plate and engaging the bridge to support the same.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HERMAN MAX MAINE.
Witnesses:
