epplication filed April is, 1:313. serial 25c. recess.
To all "whom, it may concern:
Be it known: that I, Gnonon E. SHERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, county of Cook, andStste of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Closets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to portable closets and has for its primary object the provision of an improved collapsible device of this class.
With the above and other objects in view this invention consists substantially in "the arrangement, and construction of parts all as hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawii 's which form a port of this specification and show the invention, and more specifically set forth in the subjoined claims.
In the drawings: Figure l is a perspective 'ng it hanging to the well of a room and in position for use. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the bottom of the interior of my invention, the upper part being broken away. Fig. 3 is a view in perspective ofthe frame of my invention and showing clothes hansers attached thereto. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of a portion of my invention taken approximately on the line fl-4 of Fig. i, and looking in the direction indicated by the arrows. Fig. 5 is a vertical section of the upper frame of my invention on the line 55 of Fig. 3, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows, but showing a ditierent position of the parts of the upper frame than that illustrated in efercnce numeral 10 indicates the well of a room, the floor of which is 11.
12 rs an envelop of cloth or similar flexible material, preferably of a rectangular form and held in its desired shape by means of an upper frame indicated generally by A, and by a bottom frame indicated generally by B.
The upper frame A comprises a rectangular strip 13 of metal or other suitable material, provided with a cross piece 142 of similar material. Bails 15, preferably formed of strips oi metal, are pivoted at one of their ends to the rear side of the strip 13 and at their forward ends to the cross piece 14, the pivots b. n preferably of bolt mg nuts 17. Tl
p as shown vIncst clearly in F l, 3, and 4, and they pierced as at 18 and slotted as at 19 for engagement with cap-screws 20 or other supporting members protruding from the well 10. A supporting rod 21 for clothes hangers 22 or other objects is preferably provided with offset ends'23, pivoted to opposite sides of the frame 13. 'From this description it will be seen that the bails l5 and the rod 521 may be folded down substantially into the plane of the strip 13, thereby conserving space required in packing the frame for transportation. The top of the envelop 12 is provided withslits 2 1- to accommodate the portion or the bails 15 which protrude without the envelop.
The bottom frame is formed preferably of a single strip of metal 25 similar to the strip 13 and which is preferably adapted to rest within the bottom of the envelop 12 without being secured thereto, though if desired fastenings may be provided between it and the envelop.
I Access is had to the interior of the closet through any desired form of opening, preferably that shown at C in Figs. 1 and 2, wherein two edges of the envelop l2 overlap in a vertical line disposed in the center of the forward side of the envelop. The overlapping edges of the envelop are closed by suitable fastening devices such as the well known spring and socket snaps 26, forming a dust-proof closet within the envelop.
My invention is Well adaptedto be carried from place to place and in addition to this portable feature is collapsible into ah extremelysmall packing space. The Walls of the envelop 12 may be readily folded between the top and bottom, and the various supporting devices described are fold'a'ble substantially into the plane of the top. The envelop 12 is readilyremoved and. being preferably formed of a washable cloth is easily cleaned. In the accompanying drawings and in the foregoing description is set forth the preferred embodimentof my invention, but it is obvious that one skilled in the art may make modifications thereof without departing from its spirit.
I claim:
l. The conibinsti n of an envelop of flexito supports, and a hanger r051 supported. by
the frame, said fastening devices and hanger rod beingcollapsible into the frame sub stantially into the plane of the latter.
Y 2. The combination of at frame having its central'portion.open, an envelop of flexible material secure l to the outer edge 01: the frame, fastening members pivoted to said frame and adapted to swing into the opening of the frame to a position substantially eoplaner with the latter, and a hanger rod
