Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
DAMON W. BROGKWAY, OF'DOVER, MAINE.
IM PROVEMENT IN SHAWL-STRPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 113,734, dated April 18, 187i.
To all persons to 'whom these presents may come:
Be it known that I, DAMON W. BnocKwAY, of Dover, of the county of Piscataquis and State of Maine, have made a new and useful invention or Combined Shawl Strap or Wrapper 5 and do hereby declare the same to be fully described and represented in the accompanying drawing, of which- Figure l is an external elevation; Fig. 2, an internal view, and Fig. 3 a transverse section of it.
It is designed for the use of a traveler, and to hold and protect a shawl or blanket as well `as one or more other articles of apparel, or otherwise, usually required by a person on a journey.
lt consists mainly of a wrapper, a sheet of leather, A, and a common shawl-strap, B, composed of a handle, a, and to two straps, b b, provided with buckles c g at one end of each, the shawl-strap at the junction of the handle and straps being secured to the wrapper by means of rivets d d, or other proper fastenings. There is also fixed to the wrapper, on its outer side, and at suitable distances apart, a series of four or other suitable number of loops, e e e c, to receive the straps Z) b and retain them in, or about in, parallelism with the opposite edges of the wrapper when the latter may be encompassing the shawl.
Furthermore, affixed to the wrapper A, and arranged on its inner side, and as represented,
are two iiaps, C C, which are to be attached or secured to the wrapper along its opposite longer edges, and to that end of it next the buckles. These liaps may be of leather or enameled cloth, having a binding, h, sewed on their inner edges and outer ends, as shown.
A row of buttons, j', iixed to one flap near its inner edge, serves, with elastic loops g, xed to the other flap, to secure the two ila-ps together and upon clothing or matters introduced between the flaps and wrapper.
The mode of using the article made as above described will be easily comprehended by most, it' not all, persons.
If desirable, the wrapper may be lined on its inner surface with cloth or other proper material, and may be enameled or japanned or embossed on its outer surface.
What I claim as my invention is as follows-that is to say:
As a new article of manufacture and as my invention, the combined shawl-strap and wrapper as composed of' the handle a, the straps b I), the wrapper A, and the ilaps C C, all arranged, combined, and provided with the loops and fastenings, substantially as described.
DAMON W. BROGKVAY.
