The rope 18 is attached to the forward or working end of the bucket as it is hauled to the dumping point by the hoisting drum. A second cable or cord 22 is connected to the bucket as shown,'and as illustrated in the showing of the invention this cord is the dumping cable or line for the bucket. The dumping cable is attached at one end to the carriage as indicated 'at 24 andf is passed through a sheave 25 on the bucket from which point it passes over the sheave 26 on the carriage, and thence by way of the sheave 27 on the tower to the winding drum 28 on the base of frame of the tower. By the utilization of these weights and cords and their winding spools, when the two cables 18 and 22 are eing wound u on their drums these weights are lifted. hen the em ty bucket 1s being returned for another oa'd and the cables 18 and 22 are running 'free and unwinding from their drums, the weights will descend and their potential energy assists to overcome the friction or the released drums. This reduction of friction permits the carriage, as it rolls down the cable track by gravity, to ull the cables and the carriage is permitte to run quickly to the loading point.
Referrin to the counterweight 10 it will be observe that when this weight is seated or supported as upon the table 10 indicated just below the weight in Fig. 5, its cable 11 may be unwound rom the drum to permit the track cable 3 to sag as required and the machine may then be used as a' slack line excavator without uncatching the bucket from the carriage.
The o eration of the device thus far described, riefly is, starting with the bucket supported b v the carriage in dotted lines at A near the tower, the carriage runs down the track cable by gravity and unwinds the N loading and dumping lines, the weights 29 relieving the drums of friction as described and enabling the carriageto pull out the cables more freely. When the osition B has been reached the bucket is reed from the carriage, in required manner, (as for in stance by the releasing device in my application for patent above mentioned) the dumping line being held by its drum. The bucket is now placed in position to scoop or dig up the soil (as shown at B) and the loading drum is operated to draw on loading-ca le 18 to load the bucket, the cable 22 being used to tilt the bucket for loading. After the bucket is loaded, the continued winding of the drum 2() pulls the bucket toward the tower or dumping place C, and
at this point the dumping line 22 is wound about its drum at a speed to cause the bucket to stand up on end and spill its contents as it is being hauled up the levee or embankment by the cable 18. After the contents of the bucket is emptied, by means of the two drums 20 and 28 the bucket is hoisted to full position of the carriage in Fig. 1, the bucket is latched in suitable manner to the carriage, and then the carriage is again permitted to return for another load. As the work progresses the tower, which is supported upon three wheeled-trucks as 35, 36, 37 which are adapted to travel u on the trackrails 38, may be moved along t e rails and the sheave 6 will also travel along the anchor cable 7 as the tower is moved, thus moving the track cable to desired position. After an area as wide as the length of the anchor cable 7 has been worked, the cable is removed from one of the posts 8 or 9, the post removed, and located in another position, and then the cable is again attached to its post, and in this manner the anchored end of the track cable is moved with the tower end of the track. The result of the operations is illustrated in Fig. 1 where the embankment or levee is shown in process of building.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I c aim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination in an excavating apparatus with a tower and a track cable having one end anchored, of a Windin drum on the tower, a sheave on the free en of the track cable, and a tension cable on the drum passed over said sheave and havin a counterweight at its end whereby a uni orm tension is preserved in the track cable.
2. The combination in an excavating apparatus with a gravity traveling carriage and its bucket, o a loading cable attached to the bucket and a winding drum for the cable, a dumping cable attached to the carriage and supporting the bucket and a winding drum for said cable, a winding s ool for each drum` a cable assed over eacl spool and a weight on eac cable, whereby when iaavavi the carriage ia traveling by gravity the Weights assist in unvvindng the cables from the drums.
3. 'lhe combination in an excavating apparatus vvith a track a carrie e thereon and a bucket, oit a pair oit Winding ruins, a dumping cable' extending trom one drum and attached to the carria e having operative connection with the buc et, a loading cable from the other drum to the bucket, a tower, and vertically adjustable supporting sheaves in the tower t'or said cables.
4. 'lhe combination in an excavating apparatus including a movable Wheeled tower and its rack and an anchoring cable parallel with the track, a traveling device on the anchoring cable, a track cable suspended from the tower and having one end connected to the traveling device, a winding drum on the tower, a sheave on the free end of the trackv cable, and a tension cable on the drum passed over said sheave and having a counterweight at its end whereby a uniform tension is preserved in the track cable.
5. 'lhe combination in an ekcavating apparatus with a suitably supported track cable 'and a carriage thereon, ot a bucket suspended trom the carriage, an operating cable attached to the carriage, and a Winding drum for said cable, a vvindin spool, and a Weighted cable passed over t e spool and drum tor unvvinding the operating cable trom the drum.
