Description

L. H. REINHARDT.
ANTl-RAlL-SPREADING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED DEC.9. I914.
Patented Apr. 27, 1915.
awvawio'a ofauA H MAI/half LDUIS H. REINHARDT, OF BERGER, MISSOETfiY ANTI-RAIL-SPREADING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 27, 1915.
Application filed December 9, 1914. Serial No. 876,326.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LOUIS H. Rnmnann'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berger, in the county of Franklin and State of Missouri, have iir- 'cnted certain new and useful Improvements in Anti-Rail-Spreading Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to railway safety appliances, and more particularly to a rail brace which will effectually prevent spreading of the rails.
An object of the invention is to provide a safety appliance of this character which can be applied to any railroad, and which can be applied either during the course of constructlon thereof or after the sameiis completed.
Another object is to provide an appliance which can be easily and quickly placed in. position to firmly hold the rails.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will he hereinafter-snore fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a transverse section a pair of railway rails showing the attachment applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a plan view of one end of the bar and head respectively.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, R-R designate a pair of railway rails which are adapted to be supported upon the usual ties T.
The improved anti-spreading device comprises a rectangularly shaped elongated bar 1 which is adapted to underlie the base flanges of the rails, as is clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. Integral heads 2 and 3 are formed on the ends and upon the upper face of the bar and these heads are adapted to engage the outer and inner portions respectively of the respective rails.
The head 2 comprises an upright portion 4 for engagement with one side of the web of the rail and this upright portion is held rigid by means of a brace 5. The head 3 comprises an extension which is formed upon the upper face of the bar 1 and has a lip 6 which overhangs a recess formed in said head for the reception of one side of the base flange of the rail. The end of the bar adjacent to the head 3 is provided with an upwardly extending lip 7, and this lip has the inner portion thereof angularly disposed and beveled as shown at 8. head 9. which is of substantially the same construction as the head 2, has its outer end angularly-slniped and beveled as at 10 for engagement with the lip 7.
It will be seen that upon placing tlain engagement with the heads 2 and a d inserting the removable head 0 within tae angularly disposed portion of the lip and in engagement with the rail, the said angular portions of the head and bar will. cause the head to be clamped tightly against the rail. A bolt 11 may then be inserted through alining openings in the bar and head to prevent accidental removai of the head from the bar.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it is thought that the construction and operation of the device will be clearly an derstood and while I have herein shown and described one specific from of my invention I do not wish to be limited thereto, except for such limitations as the claims may inport.
Having thus fully described my inven' tion what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. Ananti-rail spreading device comprising a bar, said bar having integral heads formed thereon, one of said heads adapted to engage the outer portion of one of the rails, the other head adapted to engage the inner portion of the other rail, said firstmentioned head comprising a base flange engaging ortion and a web engaging ,portion, said we engaging portion adapted to have the upper portion thereof abut the under face of the ball of a rail, an angular lip formed on one end of said bar, said lip being beveled adjacent its angular face, a removable head for engagement with the outer portion of said last-mentioned rail, said head having a beveled portion for engagement with the beveled portion ofthe lip, and means to prevent accidental disengagement of the removable head from thebar.
2. An anti-rail spreading device compris- .ing a bar, said bar having integral heads formed thereon, one of said heads adapted to engage the outer portion of one of the rails, the other head adapted to engage the inner portion of the other rail, said first mentioned head comprising abase flange engaging portion and a web engaging p0r- A. removable tion, said web engaging ortion adapted to ,with the beveled portion of the lip, and have the upper ortion t ereof abut the means to prevent accidental disengagement under face of t e ball of the rail, a race of the removable head from the bar. connected between said web engagin por- In testimon whereof I aflix my signature 5 tion and said bar, tan an dhlzlr llig org-Led in presence of two witnesses.
on one en of said ar, sal 'p in veled adjacent its angular face, a rem vable LOUIS REINHARDT' head for engagement with the outer por- Witnesses tion of said last-mentioned rail, said head JNo. D. S'rocx,
