CONTROLLING DEVICE.
Application filed July 27, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE WILLIAM ED- wARDs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Edward, in the county of Washington and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Controlling Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in controlling devices for engines, and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially adapted and designed for use with an engine including a fly wheel, and the object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this general character whereby the energy is under control of a device operable through the medium of the centrifugal ac tion of the fly wheel.
The invention also consists of the details of construction, and the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved controlling device, whereby certain advantages are obtained, and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive, and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claims.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, 1 will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein,
Figure 1 is a somewhat diagrammatic view, illustrating a controlling device constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged view in elevation of the portion of the device, as herein embodied, adapted to be engaged with the fly wheel; and Fig. 3 is a view in end elevation of the device as illustrated in Fig. 2.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, E denotes an engine of the ordinary or approved construction but hereinafter shown as of stock type, and including a fly wheel WV and the supply pipe P having interposed therein the controlling valve V.
Suitably connected to the fly wheel W and disposed radially thereof is the plate 1 secured thereto in any desired manner, but herein disclosed as anchored through the medium of the bolts 2 through suitable openings produced in the plate and co -acting Specification of Letters Patent.

Loosely disposed through the barrel 4 is the elongated member 5 also disposed through a guide loop 7 permanently secured to the plate 1.
The forward extremity of the elongated member 5 is normally held against movement with respect to the fly wheel W under the influence of the expansible member 8 herein disclosed as a coil springsurrounding the said elongated member and having one extremity suitably engaged, as at 9, with a collar 10, fixed to the elongated member 5, while the outer extremity of said expansible member 8 is suitably secured as at 11, to a sleeve 12, loosely mounted on the elongated member 5, and with which the inner extremity of the barrel is adapted to engage, whereby it will be readily perceived that by imparting the requisite rotation to the barrel, the tension of the expansible member 8 may be regulated in accordance with the requirements of practice. Should it be the desire tohave the fly wheel rotate 123 R. P. M., the barrel 4 will be so adjusted as to create sufficient tension upon the expansible memher 8 as to maintain the end-wise movable member 5 against outward movement under the influence of the centrifugal force created by the rotation of the fly wheel 7 during the period that such rotation is 123 R. P. M. or less. As soon as the revolutions per minute become in excess of this predetermined number, it will be readily perceived that the elongated member 5 will be caused automatically to move outwardly whereby the forward extremity thereof will operate the valve controlling mechanism, which will now be described.
When in projected adjustment, the forward extremity of the elongated member 5 is adapted to engage an extremity of a lever 14 herein disclosed as pivotally supported as at 15, intermediate of its length by the plate 16, said plate being adapted to be suitably anchored through any desired support, which may be used with convenience and facility. What is claimed, is:
1. A; device of the character described including a plate adapted to be secured to a rotatable element, alined loops carried thereby, one of said loops being interiorly threaded, a barrel adjustably engaged with the threaded loop, a collar secured to the elongated member intermediate of the loops, a second collar loosely engaged with the elongated member intermediate the loops, and an expansible member surrounding the elongated member and having the extremities thereof secured to the collars.
2. A device of the character described including alined loops adapted to be carried by a rotatable element, one of said loops being interiorly threaded, a barrel adjustably engaged with the threaded loop, a collar secured to the elongated member intermediate of the loops, a second collar loosely engaged with the elongated member intermediate the loops, and an expansible member surrounding the elongated member and interposed between and in contact with the collars.
