GUY E. HOBTON AND CASPAR S. WAGNER, OF AKRON, OHIO.
COLLAPSIBLE 001th."
Application filed October 9, 1913.
To all 1!: mm if muj/ mace/n llejt known'that we, G in E. Homes and (last-an Waoxcn, citizens of the United States, and residents of Akron. in th county of Sununit and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Collapsible ('ore, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to a collapsible core for use in the manufacture of rubber tires; and the object thereof is to provide a simple, strong and inexpensive core which can be easily and quickly manipulated.
"0 attain the above object by providing a core formed of a plurality of sections bound together by means of fixed and expanding rings.
The invention consists of the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and fully set forth in the claims.
Reference is to he had to tl :u-eampanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which like characters indicate cor responding, parts in all the views and in which:
Figure l is an elevation of an embodiment of our invention; Fig. 2 is a section on line 22, Fig. 1: Fig. 3 is an enlarged section of a section of a core with the binding rings; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the section having the parallel ends in partially removed position, whereby the core is collapsed.
Referring to the drawings, 5 represents one of the sections of a core, the ends of which are parallel and substantially perpendicular to the trans erse axis of the core. The adjacent ends of the sections 6 are similar to the ends of the section while the opposite ends of the sections 6 are dis posed radially. The number of the sections 7 which contact with the sections i; will vary according to the size of the core, that is.
there llltl V be one 01' 111011, :llltl the IldS 0f I said sections 7 will he necessarily disposed radially. Each of the sections is provided with a flange 8, T-shaped in cross section (see Figs. 2, 3 and t) and one of the shoulders of each section on the same side is undercut, as shown at 9, and adapted to enage the inner, beveled surtaceot a ringlO. ,ach shoulder having the undercutis also provided on the opposite side with an angulazrecess 11 adapted to be engaged by a circular shoulder 12 of a split ring 13. The
Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 794,238.
split ring 3 engaging the flanges 8 of the sections forces the under-cut shoulders of the same in engagement with the beveled surface of the ring 10 when the said split ring is expanded by means of the removable pin ll provided in the split of the ring. The shoulder ll of the split ring forms a stop for the same, limiting its movement when forced in engagement With the sections.
The core is assembled as follows: The sections .3 and 7 are placed in proper position and then the. section 5 is moved into place radially from the center. The ring 10 is then placed in position. The splitring 13 is then made to engage the sections interiorly and the pin ll is forced into the split of the same, thereby forcing said sections against the ring 10 and pinning them all together with the said rings 10 and 13. To prevent lateral displacement of the sections, the contacting ends on one section is provided with a groove 15 engaged by a projection 16 of the other section, as shown in Figs. 1 and -'-l. To take the core apart, the pin l lis removed, which permits the re moval of the split ring 13. By forcing the section 5 slightly to and the center, as shown in Fig. l, the ring 10 can be removed; and by removing the section 5 entirely, alwvays in the direction toward the center, the sections 6 and 7 can be removed from a formed tire.
Having thus described our invention, We claim as new and desire. to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a collapsible core, a plurality of sec tions forming the one and each having a flange T-shape in cross section, one shoulder of which is under out; a fixed ring adapted to engage the under-cut shoulder of the flanges; and an expanding ring adapted to engage the flanges of the sections and force said flanges against said fixed ring, one of said sections having means coactmg with the adjacent sections whereby the said sec tion may be removed radially Without disturbing'the othersections when said expanding ring is removed, substantially as and fol-the purpose set forth.
2. In a collapsible core, a plurality of sections forming the core and each having a. flange T-shape in cross section, one shoulder of which is under-cut; a fixed ring adapted to engage the undercut shoulders of the flanges; a split ring adapted to engage the lltl I flanges of the sections; a pin adapted to engage the split of the ring and thereby ex- .pand the same, thus forcing said section against the said fixed ring, all of said sections having means preventing the lateral displacement of the sections, and one of said sections hr ving means coacting with the ad-- jacent section whereby the said section can be removed radially without disturbing any of the other sections forming the core when said split ring is removed, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
' In testimony whereof We have signed our names to this specification in the presence of
