is composed of a plurality of separable sections which are segmental in form and tubular. In the present instance, there are four of these sections employed, designated 1, 2, 3 and 4, although it is to be understood that the invention is not limited in this regard.
ny desired number of sections of the core (the section 4 in the present instance), has its ends disposed in a plane oblique to the radii of the annular body of the core, the inner portion of such-section being of greater length than the outer or peripheral portion, whereby the member 4 will serve in the nature of a key and may be readily moved inward out of engagement with the-obliquely arranged end of the adjacent sections 1 and 3 when it is desired to collapse the core preparatory to removing it from the molded tire casing. The abutting ends of the sections 1, 2 and 3 may be radially disposed because these sections may be readily removed from the tirecasing after the key section a has been removed. Each of .the sections which together form the body of the core, is formed on its inner side with a segmental flange, the ends of said flanges when the sections are assembled, abutting against each other to constitute an annular bead 5 which is adapted to be engaged by the improved clamping means of this invention. Preferably the bead 5 is laterally extended. That is, it is wider than the web 6 which joins it to the main portion of the core body, as best illustrated in Fig. 2.
In order to hold the core sections rigidly in assembled relation to each other, I form the bead 5 in one side with an annular recess 7 in which is designed to fit the laterally extending flange 8 of a one piece or continuous and unbroken annulus 9, said annulus abutting against the recessed side of the bead and extending inwardly within the margin of the inner wall of the bead, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2.
Mounted within the circle of the bead 5, is an expanding member in the form of a split ring 10, said ring being preferably substantially the same Width as the bead, although this is not essential, and being provided on its outer surface with an outwardly projecting annular flange 11 which is designed to fit-within a recess 12 formed in that side of the bead 5 where the recess 7 is also formed. It will thus be understood that To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, JOHN YEMIKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ak ron, in the coun'tyof Summit and State of @hio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Cores, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad tothe accompanying drawings.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in collapsible cores or mandrels, the present invention relating particularly to a collapsible core for use in molding rubber tires or analogous articles.
The invention has for its primary object an improved collapsible core embodying an improved means for uniting its members or nuts.
A further object of the invention is a simple, durable and eflicient collapsible core, the parts of which may be readily assembled and held rigidly in operative relation to each other by means of an expansible ring designed to exert a radial pressure on the core sections in an outward direction against the reaction of a rigid and continuous annulus extending around one side faceof the core. And the invention also aims to generally improve devices of this class so as to render tllem more useful and commercially desira le.
With these and other objects in view, as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, combinations and arrangements of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which:-
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved collapsible core, parts being broken away. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line 2 2, of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar view on the line 33, of Fig. 1. .Fig. 4 is .a fragmentary view illustrating a modificationhereinafter specifically referred to.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the accompanying drawing by like reference characters. l
The body of my improved collapsible core bled with their ends abutting and web, 7 a the annular recess lus 9. Obviously,
the annulus 9 overlaps one side of the expanding ring 10. As just above specified, the ring 10 is split and where the ends come together, or approximately so, I insert a taper key or screw l2 the' same being in- 14 designed to receive dowel keys 15 for the purpose of preventing the sections from having any side motion and from becoming accidentally displaced by such motion.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing, the
operation of my improved collapsible core will be apparent.
In the practical use of the device, after the sections of the core body have been assem the dowel keys 15 inserted in place, the side annulus 9 is placed in position, as is also the expanding ring 10, and the wedge member 12 is then driven or worked into place, whereby the ring 10 will be expanded and the core sections pressed outwardly into firm relation to each other and will thus be held rigidly connected one to the other by the ex anding ring 10 and the correlated action the annulus 9.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a very simple construction of collapsible core, the parts of which may be very readily assembled and in a simple and efiicient manner. It will be noted that the recess 7 in the side face of the bead 5 is formed at the juncture of the bead with the web 6, whereby the flange 8 will lie in the same transverse plane as the shoulder which is formed at the juncture of the opposite or unrecessed.
side of the core and the web.
In that form or embodiment of my invention illustrated in Fig. 4, 6 designates the therein and 8 the laterally extending flange of the one piece or continuous and unbroken annulus 9. l0 designates the split ring, 11 the annular flange thereof and 13 the aperture in the annulus 9 through which is inserted to expand the ring This embodiment of the device difiers from that illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 by having the annular flange 8 formed with an extension 16 fitting within the annular recess 7*, said recess being set in from the juncture of the web 6 and the lateral enlarged or widened ead 5 This makes a strong construction,
scope oi: the invention,
the wedge pin 12 amass? leaving more solid metal in the body of the web, but it is to be understood that this form is an alternative of the other form and that both forms come within the purview or scope of my invention.
While the accompanying drawings illustrate what I believe to be the preferred forms of my invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto, but that various changes may be made in the construction, of the appended claims.
- What I claim is 1. A collapsible core including a plurality arrangements and proportions arts without departing from the as defined in the of separable segmental sections adapted to abut one against the other to form the circular body of the core, said sections being together provided with an inwardly extending annular bead, said bead being formed in' a rigid one side with an annular recess, annulus abuttin against the recessed side of the bead and iormed with a laterally projecting annular flange fitting in said recess, an expansible split ring mounted within the circle of the bead and. engaging the same, and means for-expanding said ring.
2. A collapsible core including a plurality of segmental sections arranged in abutting relation to each other whereby to produce a circular structure, said sections being together formed with an inwardly projecting annular bead, said bead being formed in one side with an annular recess, a rigid and unbroken annulus engaging one side face of the bead and formed with a laterally projecting annular flange fitting in said recess, an expansible split ring fitting within the circle of said bead, and means for expanding said ring against the bead, the annulus projecting inwardly over and contacting with one side face of said ring.
3. A collapsible core, includinga plurality of separable segmental sections arranged in abutting relation to each other to produce a circular structure, said sections being together provided with an inwardly projecting annular bead, said bead being formed in one side with outer and inner grooves, an annulus engaging the recessed annular side of the bead and formed with a laterally flange fitting within the formed in one side with an annular recess,
a rigid and unbroken annulus engaging one
