CHRISTIAN DAVIDSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
' DOOR-HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 2%, 1915.
Application filed December 31, 1914. Serial No. 879,828.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN DAVIDSON, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Hangers, of which the following is a specification, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
The invention relates to hangers for sliding doors, and is particularly useful in con- 'nection with the doors of freight cars.
The object of the invention is to provide for sufiicient inward and outward movement of the door to permit it to move freely; and it consists in a structure such as is hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a detail side elevation of a car and of the improved hanger, a portion of the latter being broken away; and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the parts shown in Fig. 1, a portion of the hanger being shown in elevation and the portion in section being on its vertical median line.
The movement of sliding doors, especially when used in connectionwith cars, is often impeded by the distortion of the framework due to warping, or from other causes, and frequently the contents of the car become shifted so as to press against the door. By permitting some outward movement of the door it may slide freely, frictional engagement of the contents of the car or with a distorted door post or side wall being avoided.
In the drawings the dotted line 10 represents the outer surface of the body of a car;
. the plate 11 is a filler usually attached to the car wall across the door opening, for the purpose of carrying the track 12 which, as shown, is usually a Z-bar of standard dimensions.
The door is represented at 13, and to it is secured a bracket plate 14, having an out standing boss 15 for carrying the hanger.
The hanger comprises the body portion 16, having a head 17 in the form of a hood, within which is housed the wheel 18 which runs on the track 12, the wheel being secured to the head by means of a pivot pin 19. Thebody portion 16 of the hanger is provided with the usual instanding and upturned flange 20, which loosely incloses the depending flange 21 of the track.
Below the flange 20 the hanger is bifurcated to provide a pair of legs 22, 23, be-
tween and to the lower ends of which are secured elongated links 24, 25, preferably rigidly united, the attachment to the hanger legs being by means of a pivot pin 26, the ends of which are preferably headed up, as shown. The upper ends of the links are pivotally attached to the boss 15 of the plate it by means of a pin 27, which may be without heads, as its displacement is prevented by the legs 22, 23. The upper ends of the links 24, 25, are provided with inwardly facing stop shoulders 28, 29, which cooperate with stop lugs 30, 31, formed on the bracket plate 14, thereby limiting the outward movement relatively or actually of the lower end of the hanger.
When carried by the improved hanger the door tends to swing in toward the side of the car. When the latter is in proper form, as when the car is new, the door will swing to the dotted line position of Fig. 2. Should the car side be bulged outward, as by warping, and this usually occurs in the door posts, the door will be crowded out, and in extreme cases maybe displaced to the extent shown by its solid line position, the hanger, however, retaining its proper position on the track, and the door remaining vertical. Heretofore such outward pressure of the door has caused it to swing bodily on the track as a pivot point, inclining it outwardly toward the bottom and causing it to bind in the bottom guides.
I claim as my invention 1. A hanger for sliding car doors which are movable over the side wall of the car comprising, in combination, a roller head having a rigid depending leg adapted to overhang the track on which the head runs, an upright link having its lower end pivotally connected with the lower end of the depending leg of the roller head to permit the swinging of the link in a vertical plane which is transverse to the plane of the door,
a door plate pivotally connected with the upper end of the link and extending upon the inside of the depending leg of the roller head, and cooperating stop lugs formed on the link and one of the said parts with which the link is pivotally connected to limit the inward swinging movement of the link with reference to said part and thereby prevent outward movement of the lower end of the depending leg of the roller head when the door plate occupies its innermost position.
2 A hanger for sliding car doors which are movable over the side Wall of the car comprising, in combination, a roller head having a rigid depending leg adapted to overhang the track on Which the head runs, an upright link having its lower end pivotally connected With the lower end of the depending leg of the roller head to permit the swinging of the link in a vertical plane Which is transverse to the plane of the door, a door plate pivotally connected with the upper end of the link and extending upon the inside of the depending leg of the roller Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
head, and cooperating stop lugs formed on the link and door plate to limit the relative movement of said parts in one direction and 15 CHRISTIAN DAVIDSON.
