GAME OR TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 20, 1915.
Application filed. July 20, 1914. Serial No. 851,866.
To all whom 'it may concern: Y
Be it knownthat we, Josnrrr J. SoNsr- KowsKI, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and JOHN K. SoNsrKowsnr, a citizen of the United States, both residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented Vcertain new and usef ful Improvements in Games or Toys, of
Vzo
Y status of any of the other players.
which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to games or toys and more particularly to games to be played upon a board or table by means of suitable devices or tokens,` and capable of being played byan unlimited number of persons from two to as many as may be able to group themselves around said board or table.V
One of the objects of our invention is toV construct a gaine that is capable of being continued when one or several persons withdraw or drop out either temporarily or permanently, and to which any one or all of said withdrawn players may return and continue to play without affecting the relative Another object is to construct a game of this character that will be interesting and instructive and afford opportunity Vfor mental problems in the planning of attack or defense by the various players.
` Still further objects are to provide a game apparatus that isv easy to understand and play, simple in its construction and operation, and which is inexpensive to manufac ture so that it may be sold for a reasonable price by the retailer.
The above objects and others we prefer to accomplish by the means and in the manner hereinafter fully described and as more particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein similar reference characters indicate the same parts in the various figures.
ln the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view-of our game board showing several of the parts in their relative positions upon the same; Fig. 2 is a vertical section of a fragmentary portion of the board drawn to an enlarged scale'and showing one of the counters or tokens in use; Fig. 3 is a top plan view of our invention drawn to about the same scale as Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 5 represents a suitable rectangular shaped base formed of wood, metal, ber, organy other suitable ma-player who in turn places the last plate terial, and which is preferably square or of equal dimensions upon its four sides, as shown. The upper surface of said base, preferably around the outer edges thereof, is provided with a half-round bead or molding 6 that surrounds thesame and provides a suitable wall or edging to prevent the counters and other articles used in the game from slipping therefrom. Said board is provided with a plurality of equi-distantly spaced pins or pegs 7 that are inserted and secured in a corresponding number of holes or sockets 8 bored into the upper surface of said board. There are preferably ten rows of these pegs, each row containing ten pegs, so that the pegs stand at the corners of eighty-one small squares that are formed thereby. It of course will be understood that any number of pegs or rows of pegs may be employed without departing from the spirit-of our invention, it being desirable, however, to employ enough pegs to form an odd number of squares in either direction, thus providing a square at the exact center of the board where an elongated pin or pole 9 bearing a flag is removably mounted. Each of the above described pegs 7 is provided with four elongated slots or grooves 10 that extend longitudinally of each leg and parallel to each other and are disposed upon the four quadrants of each peg, substantially as shown, with the grooves upon one peg facing and in alinement with the grooves upon the opposite pegs. Suitable plates 11 of substantially rectangular' shape are adapted to be inserted into the upper ends of the facing grooves of two pegs to form a wall between the same and a portion of the wall surrounding and inclosing each square as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings, and when a player has completed a square wall he is permitted to place one ofV his counters or tokens 12 therein so that the particular square may be duly credited to him when the game is finished.
In playing the game the counters or tokens 12 are sorted and distributed to the players so that each is provided with a number of the same color, indicia, 0r other means l thereon Wins the gaine. The game is played in rotation, each player endeavoring to Vconrstrurct Walls with the plates around squares over the board and as soonl as a square Wall is built the player completing said Wall is privileged to place his counter therein Whether he constructed the other three Walls 1 or n ot. v Care, of course, is exercised by the players'to avoidvplacing'three of the WallV plates around the fiag pole .so as to prevent the succeeding player winning the lgame by placing the fourth Wall'thereon, and Whenever a player completes a square and has placed his counter therein he is entitled to another play. After the game has been Won the proper credits are given the respective players according to the number of counters they lhave on theboard, and then said board is inverted so that the Wall plates will slide out of their grooves in the pegs and the gaine may again be started. Y .Y ln constructing the board We Vprefer to color the base and molding With red paint or stain,`the pegs are colored White, and the square Wall plates are'colored blue, and .the object of the gaine being to Vbuild a Wall around and thus protect the flag adds a patriotic tone to the scheme of the gaine.
While We have herein shown and del scribed certain specific means for carrying out our invention, it of course Will be obviousV to others skilled in the art to Which it appertains that various changes or modifications thereof are possible, and We desire it understood that allsuch substitutions 'and refinements are contemplated Within the ters Patent, is
l. A game apparatus comprising av suitable board, pegs arranged thereon'and providedvvith longitudinal grooves, jand devices adapted to be inserted longitudinally V'in the`Y grooves of tvvo pegs to construct portions of'figures. j y Y 2. A gaine apparatus comprisingasuitable` board, pegsarranged in lrows thereon, Y
and provided with longitudinalA grooves, and plates adapted to be inserted Vin facing grooves of said pegs. j
3. A gaine apparatus comprising a suiti Y able board, pegsV arrangedat the corners of geometric figures thereon, said pegs having longitudinal grooves facing adJacent pegs,
and plates adapted to be removably inserted "l in tivo of said grooves. Y Y 4. A game apparatus comprising a *suitable board, equally spaced Vpegs arranged in.- longitudinal Vand transverse alinement vvithV each other, said pegs having longitudinal grooves facing adgacent pegs-and plates adapted to be removably inserted in tvvo of said grooves.
