Description
climat 55m/e5 GEORGE A. HEARN, JR., or NnwYonK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No.A 113,660, dated April 11, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN eHow-CASES.
The Schedule referred `to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. HEARN, Jr., of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Show-Cases; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in theait to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying' drawing forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and useful improve-- ment in show-cases for merchants use, more espe cally designed for the dry-goods trade and for the most costly varieties of goods, as kid gloves, laces, silks, 85e., and consists in the arrangement of two or more glass-covered compartments, as hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 represents a top or plan view of acase constructed according to my invention.
Figure `2 is a vertical cross-section of fig. l taken on the line x x.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In this example of my invention I show a case of three tiers or compartments, marked A, B, and C, one elevated above another, as represented in tig. 2; but there may be any desired number of tiers more than one, and made of any desired length or width.
My object is t0 provide a convenient case for exposing goods for sale under glass, the goods being visible to both buyer and seller, and readily taken from the caseby the seller. The case is placed upon the counter, and the tiers or compartments are open on the side of the seller, the first and lowest opening being next the seller, and the other tiers and openings,
as they rise in height, vbeing farther from the seller.
D I) represent the ends of the case.
E E E represent the plate-glass coverings of the compartments.
F represents metallic clasps, which secure the plates of glass to the ends D D.
G G Gare openings under the glass plates, extending the entire length of the case.
The compartment A may be `placed at an angle with the counter, or may be parallel to the counter.
The advantages of' this improvement are that a great variety and quantity of goods can be shown in a small space in such a manner that they are protected from dust and from being handled by persons passing. In a three-tier case, six and a half feet long, there can be pnt one hundred and twenty dozen of gloves, worth, say, thirty dollars per dozen, amounting to three thousand six hundred dollars, and every pairv can be seen, as the gloves are packed in boxes edge,
wise, the color and shade of each pair being distinctly visible.
The seller can with Very little trouble arrange the stock, can readily lay his hand on any particular box.`
and pair of gloves, is not obliged to turn from customers to procure the goods required, and can see at a glance that the stock offered for sale is in good order.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentev A show-case composed of two or more glass-cov ered compartments or tiers, constructed substantially as shown and described, and for vthe purposes set forth.
GEORGE A. HEARN, JR.
