TEMPORARY BINDER OR LOOSE-SHEET HOLDER.
specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 20, i915.
Application led June 15, 1914. Serial No. 845,179.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE P. IVIGGIN- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kalamazoo, Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Temporary Binders or Loose-Sheet Holders, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to improvements in temporary binders or loose sheet holders.
The main objects of this invention are: First, to provide an improved temporary binder which is capable of very rapid manipulation to permit the insertion or removal of loose leaves. Second, to provide a temporary binder or loose sheet holder of the flexible transverse cord type which may be readily embodied in small binders as well as in binders of considerable size. Third, to provide in a temporary binder or loose sheet holder an improved adjusting means. Fourth, to provide a temporary binder or loose sheet holder of the class described which is very simple and economical in structure and at the same time strong and durable and secure.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. Y
'lhe invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is a detail view of a structure embodying the features of my invention with one of the covers open,` the strands of one of the binding strips being spread apart to better show structural details, the sheets being illustrated in conventional form. Fig. II is an enlarged detail section on a line corresponding to line 2-2 of Fig. I with the covers closed. Fig. III is an enlarged detail transverse section on a line corresponding to the broken line 3-3 of Fig. I. Fig. IV is a plan view of one of the binding strip retaining members 5. Fig. V is a detail transverse section corresponding to that of Fig. III of still another modication or embodiment of my invention. Fig. VI is a plan view of a modified form of the binding strip retaining member 5.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the `section lines.
Referring to the drawing, the covers l of the structure illustrated are of ieXible material and are secured to the rear edges of the binding or clamping members 2 to fold forwardly over the same when the binder is closed. In the structure illustrated the covers are made of two thicknesses of material folded over and suitably glued to the binding members 2, which are preferably of metal.
The binding strips 3 are of suitable flexible material, and said strips are releasably secured to one of the binding members by means of the retaining members 5 which, in the structure illustrated in Figs. I-IV, are I-shaped sheet metal stampings, the bar part of the retaining members being engaged in the loop of the binding strips on the outer end of the binding member.
In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. I-III the strands of the binding strips are arranged through pairs of slots G in the spring clutch or securing members 7 which are mounted on the other binding member by means of the rivets 8, the rivets being disposed through the inner ends of the securing members so that their outer ends are held yieldingly toward the binding members. The rivets or studs 8 are preferably pivots for the securing members so that they may be swung in a plane parallel to the plane of the side of the binding member on which they are mounted. This facilitates the assembling of the parts.
In the embodiment shown in Figs. I-III slots 6 are formed by slitting and turning the slit portions inwardly and downwardly to provide wedge-shaped clutch parts 9 which project into the slots of the binding member and engage the binding strips between the strands, clutching or clamping the strands against the edges of the slots. Any pull or strain which tends to separate the binding members draws the clutch or securing members tighter upon the binding strips so that they are very firmly secured and, at the same time, they may be readily released by raising the free end of the securing members.
rl'he ends of the strands are preferably connected after being passed through the slots 6 in the securing members by means of the end clips l0. The ends of the clamping l members are preferably turned up at 11 to upward pull being all that is required. To
tighten the binding strips it is only necessary to pull up on the same and press the binding member down. Vhen the securing members are of spring material or spring actuated they automatically engage when the pull on the binding strips is discontinued.
In the embodiments illustrated the sheets or leaves l2 are provided with binding strip engaging slots 13. Perforations, may, however, be used if desired, the retaining members 5 being removed when it is desired to thread perforated sheets upon the binding strips. I- sometimes use binding strips having single strands. Y In the embodiment shown in Fig. V the securing member 7 is provided witha pair of stud-like clutch members 8', the slots 6 of the embodiment shown inFigs. I, II and III being omitted. 1 Y
The retaining member 20 shown in Fig. VI is a modification of the retaining member 5 shown inFig. IV. The releasing member 2O is slotted at 2l to receive the binding strip strands and Vis notas readily detachable as the form shown in Fig. IV.
My improvements are well adapted for embodiment in small, light binders Vand are highly desirable where such binders are required. They are however, very desirableY when embodied in bindersV of Vc `insiderable size. The binders are simple and economical to produce and hold the sheets very securelyV and are capable of very rapid manipulation.
I have not attempted to illustrate all the embodiments orV modifications of my improvements which' I contemplate as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates to embody or adapt the same as may be desired. I desire, however, to be understood as claiming my improvements speciically in the form illustrated as well as broadly within the scope of the appended claims. Y
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is:
