FOLDING GRAIN-HARVESTER REEL.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 250, 1915.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID E. BUCHANAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dublin, in the county of Erath and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Grain- Harvester Reels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to folding reels for grain harvesters, and particularly to means for making the arms of the reel shiftable and for providing means for bracing the arms and for holding the arms in different positions, folded or unfolded position, and the object is to provide a reel with arms which can be folded and to provide devices which are detachably connected to the arm holders and which can be easily and quickly detached from the arm holders so that the arms may be shifted on the holders and to provide simple clips or brackets for holding the arms at any position on the arm holders, and to provide reels which can be folded so that the harvester can be moved from place to place without taking 01f the reel.
Other objects and advantages will be fully explained in the following description and the invention will be more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application.
Figure 1 is an end elevation of the reel. Fig. 2 is a broken sectional view, showing a detail of the spring-actuated yokes for holding the arms in place. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the reel. Fig. l is a sectional view, showing the arrangement of the spring-actuated yokes relative to the holding clips. Fig. 5 is a detail view of one of the arm holding ring braces. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the releasing yokes.
The improved reel is provided with a shaft 1 and hubs 4 are rigidly mounted on the shaft. Ring braces 2 and 3 are fixedly connected to the hubs 4 by spokes 5, forming spiders for spacing and holding the ring braces 2 and 3 in place and arms 6 for carrying the grain slats 7 are connected to the ring braces 2 and 3 by clips or brackets 8 which are bolted to the arms 6 and which are formed to engage the ring braces 2 and 3. The clips are preferably made of flat metal bent upon itself for a portion of its length and the end portions formed to receive the arms 6 and ends of the metal being spaced apart to pass on each side of the spokes 5 at their engagement with the ring braces 2 and 3. See Fig. 4. This arrangement makes provision for shifting the clips 8 circumferentially on the ring braces 2 and 3. The ring braces 2 and 3 are preferably flat on the sides or faces and of considerable width from the inner to the outer periphery so that they will form rigid braces for the arms either in the shifted position or the normal working position. The grain slats 7 are bolted to the arms 6 and the mounting of the arms 6 will make the slats 7 firm for beating the grain in position.
The clips 8 are detachably connected to the ring braces 2 and 3 by springactuated yokes 9 which have two prongs 10 which enter holes 11 in the ring braces 2 and 3. The yokes 9 are slidably mounted on bolts 12 and the bolts 12 have their heads countersunk in the clips 8. See Figs. 2 and 4. The yokes 9 rest against the clips 8 and spiral springs 15 are mounted on the bolts 12 between the yokes 9 and washers 14: which are held in place on the bolts 12 by nuts 13. The yokes 9 are provided with laterally projecting lugs 16 so that a person can lift the yokes 9 and draw the prongs out of the holes 11 when the arms are to be shifted for folding the reel. l/Vhen the prongs 10 are lifted out of the holes 11, they can rest on the faces of the ring braces 2 and 3 and he slid on the rings 2 and 3. With this construction, the arms 6 can be quickly and easily detached from working positions for folding purposes. The prongs 10 will automatically enter the holes 11 when the clips 8 have been slid back to working position. The holes in the ring brace 2 must be in line with the holes 11 in the ring brace 3 so that the grain slats will be parallel with each other and parallel with shaft 1.
The construction herein set forth will provide reels which can be made very light because the bracing will hold the parts rigidly in place during operation. The particular construction and arrangement of the ring braces 2 and 3 will hold the slat carrying arms 6 rigidly in place both in the working position and the folded position.
What I claim, is,
1. A folding reel having a shaft, hubs attached thereto, ring braces having flat faces and means mounting said braces on said hubs, slat carrying arms, and means for detachably connecting said arms to said.
ring braces consisting of spring-actuated yokes having prongs passing through said ring braces and clips attached to said arms and engaged by said prongs.
2. A folding reel having a shaft, hubs attached to said shaft, ring braces and means for attaching the same to said hubs, slat carrying arms, and means for detachably connecting said arms to said ring braces consisting of clips attached to said arms and engaging said ring braces, yokes having ring braces, bolts passing through said clips and through said yokes, and spiral springs 15 on said bolts bearing against said yokes and nuts holding said springs in place.
