Patented Apr. 28, 1915.
Application filed July 29, 1913. Serial no. 781,766.
To all whom it may concern: 1 -Be it known that I, LOUIS A. SCHMIDT, a
citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county of Kings, and State of'New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing-Machines, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
This invention relates to certain improvements in printing machines.
It is the object of the present invention to provide an improved inking. arrangement for such machines employing a plurality of printing couples whereby .a'single ink-fem tam anda single ink distributing cylinder for roll supplies the necessaryink'to, the form members of two printing couples, thus prosci ducing a very simple an'd compact constructron.
7 "t For a full understanding of the invention reference may be had to the accompanying drawing and adetailed-description of the same. 'l-he figure of the drawing is a diagrammatic side elevation "illustrating one em- I bodiment of the invention shown as applied to a rotary perfecting press.
Constructions embodying the invention Willi-include a plurality of printing couples uihiciimay be'ofany desired type. In the 'machine selected to illustrate the invention,
tlieprinting couples are rotary couples, and in-the' machine shown these couples are arranged in decks, two couples to a deck, each deck forming a perfecting mechanism, and
two decks'being arranged in line.
Referring to the drawing, A indicates one deck, which includes form cylinders 1 and 2, and impression cylinders 3, l; B indicates a second deck, this deck including form cylinders 5, 6, {and impressioncylinders 7 8, the cylinders of decks A and B being including form cylinders 9, 10, and impress'ion cylinders 11, 12; D indicates a fourth Qdeck, including. form cylinders 13, '14: and
impression cylinders 15, 16, decks C and D h ving their cylinders in line and being shown as arranged below decks 'A, B.
Iii accordance with the invention, there is 1 provided one inking fountain and fountain roll and a single distributing cylinder orroll *for supplying to the form cylinders of.
two of therctary couples. In the particular ink distributing cylinder 20.
V distributing rolls 21.
sub- ,stantialiy -in'line; G indicates a third deck,
machine illustrated, in which the couples are arranged in decks of two couples to a deck and two decks arranged in line, the ink distributing cylinder and fountain Willbe preferably arranged between the last couple of the first deck and the first couple of the second deck for each story of decks.
The constructions are in the machine illustrated identicaland adescription of one will suliice for an understanding of the invention. The ink fountain and ink distributing cylinder may be of any suitable or usual design. In the particular construction illustrated, there is provided a fountain 17 in which rotates a fountain roll 18 operated in any suitable manner. From this roll ,18 ink is taken by a vibrating ductor 19, which is given a vibratory movement by any suitable mechanism. This ductor delivers ink to an The ink may be delivered from the distributing cylinder 20 to the form cylinders in various ays. In the particular construction illustrated,
the ink from the distributing cylinder is delivered to the form cylinder 2 of the printing deck Adirectly by means of a pair of The ink is delivered to the formcylinder 5 of deck B on the other side of the distributing cylinder by a pair of form rolls 22." These form rolls 21, 22 are preferably frictionally driven. In the construction illustrated, the distributing cylinder and form cylinder 2 are rotating in the same direction, and form cylinder 5 is rotating in the opposite direction, and as the form rolls are frietionally driven, it is necessary to effect the'proper inking of form cylinder 5 that the direction of rotation of theform rolls 22 be reversed. Various means may be employed for reversing the direction of the rotation of form rolls 22. In the particular construction illustrated, this is eii'ectedby providing a pair of intermediate rolls 23 frictionally driven from the distributing cylinder and from which the rolls 22 are frictionally driven in a direction reverse to the direction of rotation of the intermediates 23, and reverse to the direction of rotation of the form cylinder 5, whereby the form cylinder takes its ink properly. These intermediates in addition to reversing the direction of rotation of the form rolls 22,further act to affect an-even distribution of the ink.
The parts are, therefore, preferably arranseni as shown with the form c linder a 2 g y ing cylinder and accompanying distributing rolls are eliminated.
I It will be understood that the two form cylinders inked from the single distributer are supplied with sufficient ink by causing "the fountain roll and ductor to operate at speeds sufiicient to deliver theamount of ink required or desired,'this being accomplished by suitably adjusting suchparts.
It will be understood that while a distributing cylinderhas been shown as inking the second form cylinder of one deck and the first form cylinder of a deck arranged on the other side of the distributing cylinder, this construction being cspecially convenient in that two webs ma be perfected without turning, the distributing cylinder may be located between two printing couples of one deck Where only one deck of such couples is used. In such construction it will, of course, be understood that to perfect a web, the web is turned, which can be effected by any suit able turning bar of ordinary construction, which has not been illustrated, as such illustration is thought unnecessary.
The form cylinders 1 and 6 of decksA and B are inked in the machine illustrated, by separate inking mechanisms. This inking mechanism may be of any usual or desired construction. In the construction illustrated, such mechanisms include an ink fountain 25, fountain roll 26 and vibrating ductor 27 which delivers to a distributing cylinder 28, suitable distributing rolls 29 being provided for evening up the ink, the ink being delivered to the form cylinder by form rollers 30.
While the invention has been shown and described in connection with a rotary mawith a chine in which two decks of two printing to be limited to such arrangement, but that it maybe employed in various other rela tions and in various other types of machim Without departing therefrom, and it is understood that such changes may be made.
What is claimed is 1. In a printing machine, the combination with a plurality of printing couples, of an ink fountain and a single distributing cylinder to which ink is delivered from the fountain, a pair of form rolls which deliver ink to the form member of one couple, a second pair of formrolls which deliver ink to the form member of the second couple, and means for reversing the direction of rotation of one of the sets of rolls.
2. In a printing machine, the combination plurality of rotary'printing couples,- of an ink fountain and a-single distributing cylinder to which ink is delivered from the fountain, a pair of form rolls which deliver ink to the form cylinder of one couple, a second pair of form rolls which deliver inkto the form cylinder of the second couple, and means for reversing the direction of rotation of one of the pairs of form rolls. 4 In a printing machine, the combination with a plurality of rotary printing couples, of an ink fountain, a distributing .cylinder to which ink is delivered from the fountain, a pair of form rolls which take ink directly from the distributing cylinder and deliver it to the form cylinder of one'of the couples, a pair of form rolls-for delivering ink to the form cylinder of the other couple, and a pair of intermediate rolls between the distributing cylinder and the sec ond pair of form rolls, said intermediate rolls being arranged to take the ink delivered to the distributing cylinder before the distributing cylinder delivers to the first pair of form rolls.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
