COMBJJN'ED CIGAR-CUTTER, AND MATCH-DELIVERER.
a tncanon filed September 8, 1914.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that 1, JOHN I-IORDUBAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scalp Level, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Combined Cigar-Cutter and hlatch-Deliverer; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved combined cigar cutter and match deliverer, including an alarm device which indicates that the machine is being operated.
As one of the objects of the invention it is the aim to provide a mechanism of the above character mounted in a suitable casing and including a longitudinally arranged single partially rockable or revoluble shaft for simultaneously actuating the cigar cutting mechanism, the match deliverer or picker and an alarm device when the shaft is rocked.
In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations, falling within the scope of What is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through the improved cigar cutter and match safe, indicating the alarm mechanism. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on line H of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail view of the cutter and the means for operating the same. Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail view of the alarm mechanism. Fig. 7 is a sectional view on line 77 of Fig. 8. Fig. 8 is an enlarged cross sectional view of the parts 2, 53, 54, 53 and 427 which are shown in Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates an elongated casing, in bearings of which a partial rockable or revoluble shaft 2 is mounted. A pivot shaft 3 is provided, one end of which is mounted in a bearing 4 of the casing, the other end in a bearing 5 of a short standard 6. Bookable with the shaft 2 is a lever 7, one end of which is provided with a push knob 8, the other end of said lever has connected to it one end of a coil spring 9, the other end of which is connected at 10 Specification of Letters Patent.

to said casing. When the lever 7 is pushed downwardly the spring 9 is put under tension, which acts to return the lever and the rocking shaft 2 to their normal positions. Pivoted upon the shaft 3 is a lever 11 having a link connection 12 to the lever 7 The end 13 of the lever 11 is connected to the bar 14, which is mounted in guides 15, and provided with a cutter blade 16, slidable adjacent the inner face of the front side 17 of the casing, and is designed to move over or pass the opening 18, through which the end of the cigar is designed to be inserted, to be severed by the cutter. A chute or trough 19 is arranged in the casing having its upper end disposed adjacent the opening 18. The
lower end of the chute or. trough terminates adjacent the boX or the like 20, which is mounted in suitable guides 21 of the interior surface of the base of the casing. When the knob 8 is depressed oscillating or rocking the shaft 2 against the action or tension of the spring 9, the link 12 in turn moves downwardly rocking the lever 11, which in turn reciprocates the bar 14, thereby causing the cutter to move across or past the opening 18, thereby severing the end of the cigar. The tip of the cigar by its gravity passes down the chute or trough 19, into the box 20, and after the box becomes full the same may be removed for cleaning, and then reinserted. Also mounted upon the shaft 2 is a lever 26, and connecting one end ofthe lever and the bottom of the casing is a spring 27, and on the other end of the lever 26 is a bar 28, to the upper end of Which a triangular dog 29 is pivoted at 30, which is under tension of the spring 31 on the pin 32. One end of the spring 31 engages the dog, while the other end of the spring engages the flange 33. One of the corners of the triangular dog slides in a groove 3% of the interior side of the front face 17 of the casing. Also upon the inner face of the front piece 17 is a bell 35 mounted upon the bolt 36, on which bolt is an angular lever 37 having a bell clapper arm 38 and an arm 39, which normally engages the inclined edge 40 of said dog. The lever 37 is under tension of the spring 41.
When the shaft 2 is rocked, the bar 28 is pulled downwardly (which is mounted in a suitable guide 28 to prevent the bar 28 from leaving parallelism with the inner face of the front part 17),
29 (which has one corner extending into a guide groove 34) being pivotally carried by and owing to the dog 'V-shaped bottom 46.
the bar 28, the arm 39 of the lever 37 is moved downwardly, owing to the edge 40 of the dog 29 contacting with the arm 39.
In tilting the arm 39 downwardly the spring 31 is put under tension, and the dog slips by the arm 39 substantially at the time when the arm 39 reaches its limit of movement in a downward direction. When tilting the arm 39 downwardly, the inclined portion of the arm 38 of the lever 37 cams against the part 42 of one of the arms of the bell clapper 42, and tilts the bell clapper lever so that the bell clapper moves away from the inner circumference of the bell 35, the part 38 of the arm 38 contacts with the part 42 of the bell clapper lever and limits the arm 39 in its downward movement. Just so soon as the dog 29 passes the arm 39, the spring 41 instantly returns the arm 39 in contact with the lug 37 and in this case the bell clapper 42 falls by gravitation and strikes the bell. When the shaft 2 rocks in a reverse direction by the action of the spring 27, the bar 28 is moved upwardly, and when this action occurs the inclined edge 43 of the dog 29 cams against the arm 39 (which is prevented against upward movement by the lug 37) putting the spring 31 under tension sufficiently to allow the corner (which engages the guide groove 34) to pass the arm 39, thereby allowing the dog 29 to assume its normal position, before the moving of the bar 28 downwardly, as shown clearly in Fig. 6 of the drawing.
A partition wall 44 is arranged in the casing 1, thereby dividing the same into two compartments, one in which the alarm device and cigar cutter mechanism are arranged, while the other compartment 45 constitutes a match safe, provided with a The shaft 2 passes between the adjacent edges of the inclined portions of the V-shaped bottom, exactly where the apex of the bottom is formed. Between the shaft 2 and one edge of one of the inclined portions of the V-shaped bottom, a slot 47 is provided, through which a match is discharged, so as to pass down the inclined chute 48 into the tray 49. Extending transversely of the inclined portions of the V-shaped bottom is a slot 50, in which the picker device 51 oscillates. This picker device comprises a picker arm 52, and a second arm extending at an angle to the picker arm, which second arm 53 is provided with a match guard 54. As the shaft 2 partially rotates the picker arm is just of sullieient length to extract a single match from the safe, and discharges through the slot 47, and as the picker arm is in the act of performing this function, the guard arm 54 likewise moves to prevent the other matches from following. The guard arm not only prevents the other match from following the match that is picked, but also acts to loosen the remaining matches.
From the foregoing it will be seen that an improved combined cigar cutter match discharging mechanism and alarm device are all operated synchronously, as the main shaft is rocked.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful. is
In combination with a match delivering mechanism and cigar cutting mechanism including a dominant rockable shaft for operating the same, a casing therefor, an alarm bell in said casing having a spring tensioned bell clapper lever, a vertical movable bar having a triangular dog, under one of its inclined edges of which one arm of the bell clapper lever normally engages, a spring for tensioning said dog, and connections between the vertically movable bar and the operating shaft for actuating the bar to actuate the bell clapper lever.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN HORDUBAY.
