CAR-DOOR LOCK.
1,1se,11v.
Patented Apr. 20, 1915.
Application led December 19, 1911, Serial No. 666,724. Renewed March 2, 1915. Serial No. 11,578.
T0 all'wwm it may concern Be it known that we, OTTO F. GnLnnroi-r and GUs'rAv lV. HrN'rZ, citizens of the United States, residing at South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of ndiana, have invented new and useful improvements in Car-Door Locks, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to the class of latches and more particularly to that class of latches which are known as car door latches.
An object of our invention is to provide a latch which is simple in construction and efficient in operation.
Another object is to provide a latch which can be manufactured and sold at a very low cost.
A further object is to provide a latch which-2 can be easily attached or detached to or from a car door or car body.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, our invention relates to such details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of the several parts as will be hereinafter fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing our invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of our invention as in place. Fig. 2 is a sectional View taken on line 2 2, Fig. 1 showing our invention as in a locked position. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2, Fig. 1 showing our invention as in an unlocked position. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a bracket used. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the latch member. Fig. 6 is a detail.
In the accompanying drawing 1 designates a section of a car body and 2 designates a section of a car door.
We desire it to be understood that we do not limit ourselves to the specific disposition of our latch as shown in the drawings, the same being merely shown for sake of illustration.
The car body is provided with a cut out portion 3 which cut out portion receives the plate 4 as is clearly shown. Formed in the plate 4 are the openings 5 which serve a purpose that will presently appear. The plate 4 is further provided with the inwardly projecting offset portion 6 which extends into the cut out portion 3. 1t will be readily recognized upon reference to the drawings that the cut out portion 3 is of peculiar form. The function performed by the peculiarly formed portion will be hereinafter pointed out. We further provide a bracket 7 which bracket is provided with the upstanding portionS the said upstanding portion being in turn provided with the aperture 9. Formed integral with the bracket 7 is the flange 10, the saidlflange being provided with the offset portion 11. For a purpose that will presently appear, we provide the oifset portion 11 with the lip 12. We provide the extension 10 with an aperture 13 which is adapted to receive a pin 14.
rFhe latch member of our device is shown at 15 and is provided near one end with the slot 16 which is adapted to receive the pin 14. lThe latchl member isfurther provided with the curved extension 17 which extension is adapted to enter one` of the openings 5 as is clearly shown. For purpose of operating the member 15 we have formed upon the same a handle portion 18 it vbeing provided with an opening 19 which is adapted to register with the aperture 9 as is illustrated in Fig. 2.
When the latch member 15 is in the position shown in Fig. 3 the curved extension 17 engages the lip 12. If it is now desired to lock the door 2 the handle 18 is grasped by the operator and the member 15 is raised thereby drawing the extension 17 out of engagement with the lip 12. The member is then allowed to swing to the position shown in Fig. 2. 1t will now be readily recognized that a seal or lock of some kind can be inserted through the opening 19 of the aperture 9 thereby holding the door against movement.
1t will be seen that we havev provided a keeper in the form of a bar 6, and a locking lever 15 provided with arcuate locking eX- tension adapted for engagement with the keeper to lock the door, and further, the lever 15 is provided with a slot-engaging the pivot 5 so that the lever can be shifted to move the extension into the path of the stop means 12, and lock the lever in an inoperative position, or that the lever can be shifted so as to cause the extension to clear the stop means so as to permit downward movement of the lever, and upward movement of the extension, into a locking position with respect to the keeper. It will be seen that this Vfeature of the invention is realized by a single pivot and slot connection Without the employment of a link.
We desire to lay great stress upon the simplicity of our device and it is thought that the` advantages and novel features of the same will be appreciated.
We desire it to be understood that we may make slight changes ink the construction and in the arrangement and combination of the several parts, provided such changes fall lwithinfthe scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In a'device of the character described, a supporting structure having a member K slidable in engagement therewith said supporting .structure adapted to be provided with a cut out portion, a plate adapted to be disposedV within said cut out portion said plate provided with a plurality of openings, a bracket carried by said slidable member, a flange vformed upon said bracket, an opening in said bracket, -a latch member, said latch member provided with slot adapted to be raised over said opening, an extension formed upon said latch member, means Vformed integral with said flange adapted to engage said last named extension and means whereby said latch member Vmay be operated so as to be disengaged from said means and Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the may be in engagement with said plate for the purpose described.
2. In a device as set forth, a supporting structure having a member in slidable engagement therewith, said supporting structure having a cut-out portion, a plate disposed within said cut-out portion, said plate being provided with a plurality of openings, an olf-set portion depending inwardly from said plate, a bracket secured to said slidable member, a flange formed upon said'bracket, said flange being provided with an aperture, a lip formed upon said flange, said bracket being provided with an opening, a latch member, said latch member having a slot and also an opening nea-r one end thereof, said opening coinciding with said aperture in the aforementioned flange whereby said latch may be locked, a cam-shaped extension formed upon said latch, adapted to engage said lip, and means whereby said camshaped extension may be moved from engagementV with said lip, thereby moving said cam-shaped extension into engagement with the first named off-set portion for the purpose described.
