DOWEL CONNECTION. APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 29, 1913.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAYMOND W. Erwin, a citizen of the United States, residing" at Fremont, in the county of Sandusli'y and State of Ghio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Dowel Connections, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
In a common form of dry battery, the binding posts consist of a screw and a knurled hut, one particular form having a screw retained in a hole in the carbon rod.
My invention relates to this latter dowel.
type. The carbon electrode surrounded. by an exciting nnx is packed in a zinc container and closed with a sealing layer. Various forms of carbon electrodes have been used, among Which a corrugated. electrode has been found to be particularly advantageous. These may either be molded or forced through a hydraulic machine, the latter being the preferable method ,on account of its cheapness. If a dowel pin connection is used, and the corrugated electrode is placed. flush with or projecting from the seal, the sealing material Will not flow evenly between the corrugations, and will present a poor appearance.
It is the object of my invention to provi e a dowel terminal that permits the use of a corrugated electrode and at the same time secure a neat seal with the top layer of pitch or analogous material.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a cross sectional View of the upper portion of a dry battery showing the connection. Fig. 2 is an isometric View of the hexagonal nut and corrugated electrode.
Referring to the drawings, carbon electrode l is surrounded by usual exciting de 'iolarizing material 2 consisting o carbon, and pyrolusite moistened W elect. lotion. The is place. 1 tainer 3 bar a bibulous lining a closed by a 5 cousis various ers such as a corrugated disk ("3, a layer sand *2, and a top seal of glitch 8. The carbon electrode 1 has a hole 9 therein with an irregular space usually formed by drilling slanting holes 9 at the bottom. The extremity of a dowel 10' has a head portion 11. which is held in the electrode by pouring into the hole a suitable molten metal 12 such as type met-ll. Upon solidifyir the Specification of letters .Yaten t.

The seal covers up the pr gonal periphery of the nut and makes goon contact with the round barrel of projection i l. The barrel 14; may be sepa; rate from"; the nut, but the construction shown is preferable.
in addition to the better appearane, a more perfect seal is formed by my improve ment.

having a fl' nge and a cylindrical boss threaded on the-dowel to bind the sheath tightly in the electrode, aimix around the I electrode, a receptacle for the mix and a seal in the end of the receptacle extending above the flange of said nuhtn contact with the
