DRAW-BAR ATTACHMENT.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ERNEST P. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Morriston, in the county of Levy and State of Florida, have invented new and useful Improvements in Draw-Bar Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to car attachments and more particularly to means for holding the draw bar of railroad cars in central position with relation to the body of the car.
The principal object of the invention is to provide novel means for holding the draw bar in central position with relation to the car, which means permits lateral movement of said bar to compensate for the swing of the car when turning curves.
A further object of the invention is to provide a structure of this character having anti-friction means in engagement with the draw bar so as to minimize friction in a longitudinal or lateral movement of the draw bar.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this application, and in which:
Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of a car showing the attachment applied thereto and with the parts broken away. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 and 2 represent the center sills of the car frame and mounted between the sills with the outer end supported in the carry iron 3 is the draw bar 4 having the usual coupler head 5 attached to its outer end. The draw bar may be of any preferred con struction but is preferably constructed of two parts with an interposed spring or the like and has its inner end pivoted to the center bearing 6.

The same leg, adjacent its connection with the other or inner leg, is provided with a pair of laterally extending cars 11 secured to the center sills as shown. The other or inner leg of the ll-shaped spring member is provided with a pair of inwardly extending ears 12 arranged in parallelism and having journaled therebetween a roller or wheel 13 which bears upon the side of the draw bar and reduces the friction which would otherwise be produced by the longitudinal and lateral movements of the draw bar over the ends of the spring. The legs of the springs are provided as shown with oppositely extending lugs or projections 14 which receive a spiral spring 15 reinforcing the action of the springs 7. It will be noticed that when attachments of this character are applied to the center sills and bear against each side of the draw bar that said draw bar will always be moved to a position centrally of the body when the coupler thereon is released from the coupler on the adjoining car and is thereby always in position to be coupled.
What is claimed is 1. A draw bar attachment for railway cars having spaced center sills, U-shaped springs secured to the sills on opposite sides of the draw bar, lateral ears formed on one leg of the U-shaped springs, and rollers journaled in said lateral ears and arranged to engage the draw bar.
2. A draw bar attachment for railway cars having spaced center sills, U-shaped springs secured to the sills on opposite sides of the draw bar, lateral ears formed on one leg of the U-shaped springs, rollers journaled in said lateral ears and arranged to engage the draw bar, and auxiliary springs arranged between the legs of the U-shaped springs.
3.
