GEORGE 1E. TURNER, OF MAHONINGTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
CRATE 0R BOX.
Application filed September 3, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE F. TURNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mahoningtown, in the county of Lawrence and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Crates or Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to crates or boxes and more particularly to collapsible crates or boxes, the object of the invention being to provide a cheaply constructed, eificient and durable crate which may be collapsed so as to occupy small space for return shipment or storage and which may be rapidly set up into operative position when desired.
Further objects of the invention will appear; as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure l is a front elevation. Fig. 2 is an end view. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing both ends collapsed and the top folded upon the back. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a completely collapsed box or crate. Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 1.
In the specific embodiment of the invention as illustrated herein, 1 indicates a bottom member to which is secured at the front and back edges thereof the hinging members 2 and 3, respectively, the said members 2 and 3 being inclined along their top longitudinal edge as indicated at 2 for a purpose hereinafter described. To these hinging members are hingedly connected the front and back members 4 and 5 and between the hinging members are arranged the end pieces 6, the latter being hinged to the ends of the bottom member so as to fold flat thereon. The front and back members 4 and 5 have their lowermost longitudinal edges inclined as 5 and arranged in opposed relation with the inclined edges 2, whereby the side mem bers 4 and 5 may be swung slightly outwardly to permit of the end members 6 to be folded. When the end members are folded upon the bottom member they will be covered by the front and back members, as will be hereinafter described. The back member has hinged thereto a closing lid or top 7 which is latched or locked to the front mem- Specification of Letters Patent.

ber 4 in any suitable manner. The front and back members 4 and 5 are provided with framepieces 8 preferably constructed out of a single piece of metal in the form of a channel iron which tapers to nothing from a comparatively wide flange at the top of each of the members 4 and 5. These flange members are constructed in this manner so that the end members may be engaged between the flanges thereof without particular strain upon the hinges. To hold these parts securely together the side members 4 and 5 carry bolts 9 which are adapted to project through apertures in the end members to prevent disconnection of the parts when in operative position.
In folding the device, the side members 4 and 5 are swung slightly outwardly and the end members are thence swung inwardly between the said members 4 and 5 and turned down against the bottom member 1. The top is then folded upon the back member and both of these parts are turned down upon the end members as shown. The front member 4 is thence folded upon the back member, the member 2 having suiiicient width to permit this operation.
What is claimed is 1. A crate comprising a bottom member, end members hinged thereto and adapted to fold upon the bottom member, hinge pieces secured to the side edges of the bottom member and provided with an inclined top edge, side members hinged to the hinge pieces and provided with an inclined longitudinal edge arranged in opposed relation with the inclined top edge of the hinge pieces, a top hinged to one of the side members and adapted to fold thereon, said side members arranged to fold upon the end members, and tapering flange pieces carried by the side members and adapted to engage on opposite sides of the end members.
2. A crate comprising a bottom member, end members hinged thereto adapted to fold upon the bottom member, hinge pieces secured to the side edges of the bottom member and provided with an inclined top edge, said members hinged to the hinge pieces and provided with an inclined longitudinal edge arranged in opposed relation with the edge of the hinge pieces, a top hinged to one of the side members and adapted to fold thereon, said side members arranged to fold upon the end members, means for preventing dis- In testimony whereof I afiix my signature connection of the end members from the side in presence of two witnesses.
members which comprises channel members substantially U-shaped in cross section and which taper fromthe upper. end to the lower Witnesses: end, and bolts carried by the side members R. B. MORROW, and engaged with the end members. ARTHUR STURTON.
