JOHN TOMA-S SHERIDAN, 0F BOW'LING. GREEN, MISSOURI.
SAFETY DEVICE FOR RAILROAD TURN-TABLES.
Application filed November 20, 1914.
To all whome't may concern Be it known that l, JOHN T. SHERIDAN, a citizen of the United'States, and a resident of Bowling Green, in the county of Pike and State of Missouri, have invented a new and llmproved Safety Device for Railroad Turn- Tables, of which the following is a full, clear, andexact description.
My invention has for its object to provide means which will look a turntable when it is positioned relatively to a track to receive a locomotive on the track and which will automatically dispose a stop block on one of the track rails when the turntable is unlocked to permit of the rotation of the turntable.
Additional objects of the invention will appear in the following specification in which the preferred form of my invention is disclosed.
In the drawings similar reference characters refer to similar parts in all the views in which Figure 1 is a plan view showing a section of a track and a portion of a turntable and illustrating my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that a section of a track 10 leads to a turntable pit 11 in which there is a turntable 12, plates 13 being secured to the turntable and having openings 14 for receiving the dogs 15 on the bar 16, the bar 16 being disposed for moving in the guides 17 Journaled in bearings 18, in a frame 19 which is secured to the ties 20 by plates 21,
there is a shaft 22, two cranks 23 being se cured to the shaft 22 and being connected with the dogs 15 by means of the links 24. There is also secured to the shaft 22 another crank 25 to which is articulated a link 26, this link 26 being also articulated to an arm 27 of a bellcrank lever 28 fulcrumed at 29 to a plate 30 which is secured to the tie 31. The other arm 32 of the bellcrank lever 23 is articulated to a link 33, this link 33 being secured to a stop block 34 disposed for moving in guides 35 in a plate 36 secured to the ties 31 and 37.
As will best be seen by referring to Fig. 4 of the drawings, this stop block 34 may be Specification of LettersPatent.

moved to a position above the rail 38 which will serve as a stop and prevent locomotives from rolling into the turntable pit 11 when the turntable 12 is unlocked, and is thereby permitted to rotate relatively to the track 10. However, when the turntable 12 is positioned where its rails are in alinement with the rails of the track 10, the dogs 15 may be moved into the openings 14 in the plates 13 by a movement of the lever 39 which is connected with the shaft 22 by gearing 40. This movement of the dogs 15 into the openings 14 in the plates 13, will be occasioned by the rotation of the shaft 22 which will automatically move the link 26 to rock the bellcrank lever 28 by means of the crank 25, so that the link 33 will move the stop block 34 in the guide 35 and away from the rail 38.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In combination with a turntable and a track leading thereto, locking means for securing the turntable against movement relatively to the track, a stop block movable relatively to the track for disposal against a track rail, and connecting means for moving the locking means and stop block simultaneously.
2. In combination with a turntable and a track leading thereto, locking means for securing the turntable against movement relatively to the track, a stop block movable relatively to the track, and automatic means for moving the stop block to operative po sition when the locking means is unlocked.
3. In combination with a turntable and a track leading thereto, locking means for securing the turntable against movement relatively to the track, a transverse guideway, a stop block disposed in the transverse guideway for movement against a track rail, and connecting means for moving the looking means and the stop block simultaneously.
4. In combination with a turntable and a track leading thereto, a dog on the track for engaging the turntable, a link connected with the dog for operating the latter, a stop block movable relatively to the track for disposal against a track rail, and operating means connected with the link and with the stop block for the purpose specified.
5. In combination with a turntable and a 7 track leading thereto, a transverse shaft having two crank arms, a dog on the track for engaging the turntable, a link connecting one of the'cranks with the dog for operating the latter, a guideway leading to a track rail, a stop block movably disposed in the guideway, and means connecting the other crank with the stop block for operating the latter.
6. In combination witha turntable and a track leading thereto, a transverse shaft having two crank arms, a dog on the track for engaging the turntable, a link connecting one of the cranks with the dog for oper ating the latter, a guideway leading to a track rail, a stop block movably disposed in the guideway, means connecting the other crank with the stop block for operating the latter, a lever, and means connecting the lever with the shaft for rocking the latter.
7. In combination with a turntable and a track leading thereto, a transverse shaft having two crank arms, a dog, a link connecting one of the cranks with the dog for operating the latter, a transverse guideway, a stop block movably disposed in the guideway, a bellcrank lever, a link connecting one arm of the bellcrank lever with the other crank, and another link disposed across the last mentioned link and connecting the other arm of the bell crank lever with the stop block.
8. In a device of the class described, a shaft having two cranks, a dog, a link connecting the dog with one of the cranks, a guideway, a stop block movably disposed in the guideway, a bellcrank lever, a link connecting one arm of the bell crank lever with the other crank on the shaft, another link disposed across the last mentioned link and connecting the other arm of the bellcrank lever with the stop block.
9. In combination with a turntable, and a track leading thereto, locking means for securing the turntable against movement relatively to the track, track means movable relatively to the track to prevent a locomotive from moving to the turntable and con necting means for moving one of the first two means into operative position as the other of the first two means is moved into inoperative position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN TOMAS SHERIDAN.
