WHIFFLETREE-HOOK.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, WILLIAM HAnBIsoN SPEAK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bismarck, in the county of Burleigh and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whifiietree-Hooks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in whiflietree hooks, and has for its principal object to provide a device which may be arranged to be secured to a whilfietree to form a securing means for the same.

Another object of he invention is to provide a safety whii'lietree hook from which the tug cannot become released accidentally.

it further object of the invention is to provide a device which may be easily and cheaply constructed so that the cost of production will at a minimum.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and a "rangements of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which,

Referring now to the drawings by charactors of reference, the numeral 1 designates the whifietree to which the whiffietree hook, designated generally by the numeral 2, is secured. This whiflletree hook comprises the main body portion 3 having the side members l formed integral therewith. These side members l are tapered as illus trated in the drawings and are provided at their wider ends with the connecting band 5 which cooperates with the remaining portions of the whiflietree hook connection in forminga socket for the reception of the end of the whifiietree as illustrated in Fig. 2. Formed at the forward end of the socket thus formed are the longitudinal extensions 6 which are spaced from each other to form Specification of Letters Patent.

the slots 7 in which the hook 8 is held on the pivot member 9. The rear walls of the members 6 are curved as at 10 in order to prevent the tug from becoming displaced should the same become slackened. In the form illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, these members are formed contiguous with the side walls 4 of the socket and are provided with the rivet 11 which takes the place of the pivot pin 9 hereinbefore referred to.

It will be apparent from the foregoing that in use, the device is slipped over the end of a whifiletree as illustrated in the drawings and the bolt or screw 12 extended through the aperture formed in the wall 3. it will thus be seen that the device will be firmly held in place and accidental movement th reof will be prevented. To attach the tug to the hook, the same is swung to the position illustrated in the dotted lines in Fig. 2 and the links carried by the end of the tug passed thereover and the hook is permitted then to swing around as shown in full lines. It will thus be apparent that the links of the tug are prevented from being unhitched without first swinging the hooks and manually releasing the tug.

While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred. embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be made in. the combination and arrangement of parts as will fall within the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.

li hat is claimed is:

A whiiiietree hook holder formed of a single sheet of metal bent to form a body portion having a socket at one end, lateral spaced extensions at its opposite end, said lateral extensions being bent inwardly at their point of connection with the body forming a pair of shoulders limiting the inward movement of said body on a whifiietree, a pivot pin extending transversely through the extensions adapted to hold a hook thereon, and means for connecting the body portion on the whifiietree and preventing any outward movement of the same.
