NOSTBIL-DILATING DEVICE.
Application filed May 17, 1913.
This invention relates to devices for dis tending the nostrils in order to facilitate respiration, and it refers to devices of the kind in which the interior walls of the nostrils are acted upon by spring pressed members, the springs for which are disposed within the nose.
The present invention has for its object to provide for the more efficient retention of devices, such as those referred to, in the nostrils, without in any way engaging the septum.
Now in accordance with the present improvements instead of arranging for a portion of the members adjacent to the septum to engage the enlargement of the lower end of the said septum of the nose, I provide members of hemispherical or other shape which rest in the pockets or cavities upon either side of the septum at the tip of the nose. In addition to these members I provide other members which are designed to rest in the pockets or cavities on either side of the septum in the floor of the nostril which cavities or pockets are just in front of the bony portion of the said floor, and about one half to three quarters of an inch from the front of the opening of the nostril.
In order that the'invention may be the better understood drawings are appended in which Figure 1. is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2. is a plan from the underside. Fig. 3. is a view from the back end, Fig. l. is a plan showing a receptacle for containing a medicament. Fig. 5. is a sectional view showing the approximate position of the device when in use.
Referring to the appended drawings a indicates the body of the device which is provided at b and c with globular or other shaped members designed respectively to engage the pockets or cavities on each side Specification of Letters Patent.

of the septum (Z of the nose, and which cavities are respectively located at the tip and behind the rear end of the opening of the nostril, and one or both of which bodies may be formed hollow to contain a medicament as shown in Fig. 4E. The shape of the device in the example illustrated comprises a substantially U shaped portion a which straddles the base of the septum cl, and which member a at the point a dips down so that the body I) is disposed within the cavity 6 formed in front of the bony structure of the nose as shown in Fig. 5. From the point just referred to each portion a curves outward toward the outer wall of the nostril, and then upward, and forward, then slightly down again, having the second member 0 at this point for engaging the cavity at the tip of the nose. The portion a as it passes from one cavity to the other comes into contact with the inner surface of the outer wall of the nose at a point adjacent the nostril opening and bearing upon said inner surface effects the desired distension of the nostrils. At the same time the point of contact is kept clear of such portions of the inner surface of the outer walls of the nose as would be liable to cause discomfort to the user. Obviously the outline of the device may be modified as may be found in practice to be necessary, or desirable, it being understood that the pocket or cavity engaging members are always provided.
The hollow body for supplying the medicament where required is located at any convenient point on the device, but preferably at that point where it engages the cavity on the floor of the nose.
In order to aid in concealing the device, such portions as are visible on the outside of the nose may be coated or covered with a. flexible enamel suitably colored.
