Description

R. G. CLYNE. MUSHROOM BULLET. APPLICATION FILED mm1, m4.
Patented Apr. 13, 1915.
ROBERT G. CLYNE, OF ALTON, ILLINOIS.
MUSHROOM-BULLET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 13, 1915.
Application filed February 11, 1914. Serial No. 817,973.
T0 all whom t may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT G. CLYNE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residin at Alton, in the county of Madison and tate of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mushroom- Bullets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in mushroom bullets, the present embodiment relating more particularly to that class or type known as sharp-nosed mushroom bullets.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a generally improved mushroom bullet of exceedingly simple, cheap, and efficient construction having superior mushroom qualities.
A still further object is to provi de an improved nose or tipy adapted not only to be securely engaged or interlocked with the jacket or casing but provided with an improved locking anchor having any enlarged pointed spheroidalA shaped spreader head concentrically arranged within and adapted tospread the core portion by the impact of the bullet when striking an object causing suicient resistance thereby causing the core portion thereof to mushroom or to spread in a. superior manner.
A still further object is to provide an improved jacket or casing adapted not only to coperate and engage with the hard nose or tip of the bullet upon impact but having a weakened or reduced section surrounding the core and anchor or core spreader portion ofthe bullet thereby facilitating the spreading or mushrooming of the bullet upon impact.
A still further object is to provide a nose or tip for a bullet of this class having an improved anchor adapted not only to be securely engaged and anchored within the core portion thereof but to prevent displacement and maintain the parts in proper relative position when fired thereby keeping the bullet from swerving or going wild in its course.
With the above mentioned and other ends in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement. and combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in one of its embodiments in the accompanying drawings. and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring tothe drawings, forming a part of this specification Figure 1, is a side elevation of amushrcom bullet constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2, a similar view, the anchored nose or tip portion being shown in central longitudinal section. Fig. 3, a side elevation, partly in section, of the metallic jacket or casing, detached. Fig. 4, a similar view of the soft metal slug before being swaged upto form the core. Fig. 5, an end view of the top or open end of the metallic casing or jacket.
Similar numerals of reference designate like parts throughout all the figures of the drawings.
The improved mushroom bullet, comprises a soft metal core 1, preferably of lead or other suitable soft material, and a metallic jacket or casing 2, preferably of nickle or copper. VThe solid conical nose or tip 3, may be made of the same material, or other suitable hard metal. The conical nose or tip 3, is preferably provided with an annular inset portion 3a, about its base, said base terminating in a. reduced neck portion having an enlarged pointed spheroidal shaped spreader head 3", embedded within said core 1.
The open end of the jacket or casing 2, projects beyond and overhangs the said core 1, with its edges 2, seated in and interlocking with said annular inset portion 3a, of the nose or tip 3. As a means of facilitating the telescoping or mushrooming of the parts by impact, the edges 2", are preferably beveled or outwardly flaring, as likewise the shoulder portion of the annular inset portion 3B. The shouldered base portion 3c, of the nose or tip 3, and the adjacent edges 1", of the soft metal core, when assembled, are likewise similarly shaped or beveled for the same purpose. As a means of further facilitating the mushrooming or spreading of the bullet upon impact, the metallic jacket or casing 2, is preferably provided with a weakened or reduced section surrounding that portion of the core which surrounds the pointed spheroidal shaped spreader head 3", of the anchor as shown most clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The section 2", may be weakened or reduced in any suitable and convenient manner, as for example,by means of longitudinally extending grooves 2, formed in the present instance, on the inner periphery of the casing or jacket 2, as shown most clearly in Figs. 3 and 5 of the drawings.
When"the bullet is assemhle'd'theslug shown in Fig. 4, is first pushed "into 'the jacket or casing 2, andthe pointedl sphe'.- roidal spreader head 3b, inserted in the hole in the front end of the slug so that when the point and anchor are pushed into place the lead or the same. time the bodyportiom Y Y.
Froml the foregoing description, taken in connection withX the accompanying drawgings,y the operation and advantages of my inventionv will be readilyunderstood.
Having thusdescribed one of the embodi- "ments of my inventionwhat I claim and de! sireto secure Vby Letters. Patent is,.-
