Specification of Letters Patent."

Application filed May a, 1914. Serial No. 836,243.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER S. BRIDGES, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to double swinging hinges for doors, and its object is to provide a strong and durable hinge of novel design which allows the door to swing freely and which provides a secure support for the door. This object is attained by means of a combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of a fragment of a door equipped with my improved hinge;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing a modification, and Fig. 5 a section on the line 55 of Fig. 4.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes the door and 6 the amb of the frame to which the door is hinged. In the edge of the j amb which faces the hinge edge of the door is a recess in which is set a heavy fiat metal plate 7 which projects from the jamb to enter a recess 8 in the hinge edge of the door, the projecting end of the plate being loose in the edge recess of the door so that the latter may swing freely. The edge of the door is reinforced by a metal strip 9 above and below the recess 8. In the top of the projecting end of the plate 7 is a V- shaped groove or channel, the branches 10 of which are curved and extend divergingly from the angle in the direction of the door. The curve is substantially quadrantal. From the upper wall of the recess 8 in the door depends a pivot 11 which extends into the grooves 10. The pivot 11 is midway between the sides of the door 5, and the angle or meeting point of the grooves 10 coincides therewith.v Thus, when the door is closed, the pivot is located at the junction of the grooves. lVhen the door is swung open to the dotted position shown in Fig. 2, the pivot travels along that groove which points toward the side to which the door is swung. The pivot travels along the other groove when the door is swung to the oppos site side. The grooves 10 slope downward toward the angle, which allows the door 5 to return by gravity automatically to closed position. The height of the recess 8 is such as to allow the door to rise slightly when it swings open, and to drop down when it closes. The pivot 11 carries a roller 12 which travels on the floor of the grooves. The periphery of the roller is rounded to prevent binding at the junction of the grooves.
The drawing shows only one of the hinge members, but it is to be understood that the door will be equipped with two or more of such members.
At the outer ends of the grooves 10 the inner walls thereof have notches 13 which will act as stops when the door is intended to stay wide open for any length of time, by the pivot 11 entering said notches.
Referring to Figs. 4 and 5, a plate 14: corresponding to the plate 7 is provided, said plate 14 having slots 15 arranged in the same manner as the grooves 10. The
I claim:
1. The combination with a jamb and a door, the door'having a recess in its hinge edge, a plate fixed to the jamb and projecting therefrom into the edge recess of the door, the face ofthe projecting end of the plate having grooves which are connected at their inner ends and extend divergingly therefrom, said grooves sloping downward toward their meeting ends, and a pivot car ried by the door in the edge recess thereof and extending normally into the meeting ends of the grooves, and movable therefrom into either one of said grooves when the door is swung.
2. The combination with a jamb and a door, the door having a recess in its hinge edge, a plate fixed to the jamb and projecting therefrom into the edge recess of the door, said plate having recesses wh1ch are connected at their inner ends and extend divergingly therefrom, and said member also having inclined surfaces following the In testimony whereof I aflix my signadlrection of the recesses, and a plvot car- 7 ture in presence of two Witnesses. r1ed by the-door 1n the edge recess thereof,
and extending normally into the meeting WALTER BRIDGES ends of the recesses,- said pivot having means engageable With the aforesaid inclined surfaces.
