To all whom it may concern:
'Be it known that I, JAMES P. BOSHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Goldwater, in the county of Comanche,
State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in D1scharge- Feeds for Unloaders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to discharge feeds for devices, such as manure spreaders and hay unloaders and has forits object the provision ofnovel means for simultaneously actuating the endless carrier and lower spreader cylinder of such devices, means being provided for regulating the speed of the endless carrier.
With the above object in view the invention consists of certain novel. details of con struction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be made in the minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification :Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side elevation showing the method of advancing the endless carrier one step.
Referring now to the drawings in which like characters of reference designate similar parts, 10 designates an open bottomed box which is supported upon ground wheels 11 and 12. Secured to the box sides is a track upon which an endless carrier travels, the same comprising a plurality of slats 14 each equipped at each end with two pairs of rollers 15 and 16 which engage the top and bottom faces of the track. The endless carrier is mounted on an idle roller 17 which is journaled at the front end of the box and actuated by a driving roller which is journaled at the rear end of the box, sprocket chains being trained over gears carried by these rollers. The driving roller is equipped with a ratchet gear 21.
A rock lever 22 is journaled on the shaft of the driving roller and is equipped with a gravity pawl 23 which operatively engages the ratchet gear 21. The rock lever is held in position by a strap guide 24: secured to the box. A reciprocating rod 25 actuates the rock lever through the instrumentality of a pin 26' which works in a longitudinal slot 27 formed in the rock lever, means being provided as will be presently described for shifting the reciprocating rod vertically to raise or lower the pin in the slot and thus advance the ratchet gear through a greater or smaller step than ordinary to vary the speed of the endless carrier.
The reciprocating rod 25 is carried in a swivel bracket 28, and for rocking the rod 'on the bracket as a pivot a bell crank lever 29 is pivoted at the elbow to the box above the rod, one leg of the lever being loosely secured to the rodby a strap bearing 30, and the other leg of the lever being connected by a rod 31 to an operating lever 32 which is pivoted at the lower end of the box near the front end thereof and is normally held stationary by a rack 33 secured to the box. By disengaging the lever from the rack the lever may be shoved forwardly or rearwardly to rock the reciprocating rod on the swivel bracket and vary the position of the pin 26 in the slot 27 of the rock lever 22.
A fixed spur gear 34L is carried on each rear wheel 12. A vertically movable shaft 35 is mounted in suitable slots formed in the box sides and is supported by means of substantially horizontally disposed rocking hanger rods 36 which extend rearwardly along the box sides and are pivotally secured at their rear ends as will presently be described. The shaft 35 is equipped at each end with a gear 37 adapted to mesh with the related gear 34 when the shaft is at its lowest limit of movement with a resultant rotation of the shaft with the rear wheels 12; Above the shaft 35 a shaft 38 is journaled in the box sides and is equipped at each end with a sprocket gear 39 over which and a related gear 40 on the shaft 35 a sprocket chain 41 is trained to connect both shafts for simultaneous rotation. A crank disk 12 is fixed to the shaft 38 and is equipped with a pitman 43 which is pivotally connected to the reciprocating rod 25 and serves to actuate the latter.
In order to maintain the endless carrier quiescent when desired the shaft 35 is rocked upward to disengage the gears 37 from the gears 34: and to attain this end a bell crank lever 44 is pivoted at its elbow on the box side, one leg of the bell crank lever being provided with an opening to loosely receive the one end of the vertically movable shaft, and the other leg of the bell crank lever being connected by a rod 45 to an operating lever 46 which is pivoted to the box side and is normally held stationary by a rack 47.
A spiked cylinder 48 is j ournaled for rotatation in the bracket arms 49 which project rearwardly from the box sides. The rear ends of the above mentioned hanger rods 36 are provided with openings to receive the ends of the cylinder shaft 50, the latter thus forming a pivot upon which the rods rock in elevating the shaft 65 to disengage the clutch gears. Sprocket gears 51 are secured to the cylinder shaft and over these gears and similar gears 52 on the vertically movable shaft 35 sprocket chains 53 are trained to connect the spiked cylinder for simultaneous actuation with the endless carrier.
:A leveling rake 54 is secured to the box sides above the spiked cylinder by bracket arms 55. .All of the above described parts are utilized when it is desired to use the device' simply as a manure spreader. However when the device is designed to be used for spreading a load of hay, straw or the like over the field for fertilizing purposes the following additional parts are applied to the box. Side boards 56 are re- HlOVtl-blYSQCLlH-Bd to the sides of the box through the insti'uinentality of pins 57 Which are fixedto the side boards and are engaged in strap-brackets 58 carried by the box sides. A pair of standards 59 are secured to the box sides in rear of the side boards and are provided at the upper ends with bearings 60 to removably secure the shaft 61 of a spiked cylinder 62 which projects-slightly 48 and coacts with the latter named parts in spreading the load over the field. What is claimed, is i The combination of a supporting wall, a bell crank lever pivoted on a horizontal pivot on said wall, and including a substantially vertically disposed leg and substantially horizontally disposed leg, a tubular bearing extending horizontally on said horizontal leg, a guide bearing pivoted on a horizontal pivot on said wall on one side of said bell crank lever, a ratchet lever disposed vertically on the opposite side of said bell crank lever and having a longitudinal slot therein, a horizontally disposed reciprocatory link engaged through said guide bearing and through said tubular bearing and having a transverse terminal pin engaged through said slot, and a driving pitman connected to said rod in advance of said bearing, said bearing receiving the shocks incident to the change of direction of said pitman at each limit of its movement.
