Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed May 8,1914. I Serial No. 837,275.
To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, ORAL J. LA COMBE, Jr., a citizen of the .United States, residing at Negaunee, in the county. of Marquette and Michigan' have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Keys for Stop-Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the ac companying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in keys for stop-boxes;.and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby requisite illumination may be created in order to. expedite the proper engagement of the crutch with the stop handle within the box.
,The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts-whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous-for use -all a s-will be hereinafter more fully set forth. 'Ihe'novel features of the invention will be carefully defined the appended claims. In order that .I,invention may be the better understood, will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- 1 Figure l is an elevational view:- of a key constructedin accordance with an embodiment of my invention; and
mentary longitudinal sectional view taken through the device as disclosed in Fig. 1.
i As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes an elongated tubular member of predetermined dimensions having one extremity formed into a crutch 2 adapted to engage with the stop handle in a wellknown manner, while adjacent the opposite extrem ity of the elongated member 1 is provided the crossbar 3 affordin the requisite operating handles. The portion 4 of the member 1 forwardly of the cross bar 3 is enlarged and is adapted to receive a suitable battery 6, such battery being in close proximityto thecrutch 2, and interposed in the conductors 7 is a suitahlecirmay be assembled and Fig. 2 is a frag in electrical connection through the medium of the conductors 7.
0 with the lamp 8 positioned within the tubu-- lar memberadjacent its] inner extremity or' cuit closure 5 including a button projecting I exteriorly of the portion 4 whereby the lamp 8 may be caused to flash when required, I
In order that the lamp 8 may be normally protected, I mount in the inner portion of the crutch 2 the. slide member Qoperating in and serving forja purpose which is believed to be clearly apparent. In order that the battery 6 maybe maintained against displacement from within the enlarged portion 4, I provide the cap 10 adapted to'detachably engage the outer end of such portion 4:.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious'thata key for a stopbox constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adaptedfor use by, reason of the convenience and facility with which it by reason of the effectlveness with which it performs its functions, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice Iclaim:
1. A key of the character described comprising a tubular member provided with an engaging extremity, an illuminating means positionedwithin such tubular member'iin close proximityto the engaging extremityof the member, and means for closing such engaging extremity of the member.
2. A key of the character described comprising a tubular member provided with a crutch, an illuminating means positioned within said tubular memberin close proximity to the crutch, and a slide Qperatively engaged with the crutch and adapted to close the adjacent extremity of the tubular mem- In testimony whereof I hereunto a my signature in the presence of two witnesses. v
