of Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Hinges; I

and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention relates to spring-hinges such as are especially designed to facilitate the han ing and taking down of doors, a member of each hinge being a fixture for permanent connection with a stationary support and with which one of the leaf-members of the hinge has detachable connection, the other leaf-member of said hinge being attachable to a swing-part.

he object of my invention is to provide simple, economical and efficient hinges, similar to those aforesaid, especially adaptable for connection with jambs of door casings having outside molding.

A further object of my invention is to provide for guarding against separation of leaf and fixture members of the hinges without the employment of a tool, and said invention consists in what is herein particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims of this specification.

Figure 1 of the drawings represents a partly sectional side elevation of a full open partly broken spring-hinge in accordance with my invention connecting a swing-part with a stationary support, the plane of the section being indicated by line 11 in Fig. 2, and Figs. 2 and 3, horizontal sectional views respectively indicated by lines 2-2 and 3-3 in Fig. 1, the hinge being shown held open in Fig. 3, to permit of a separation of the swing-part from the stationary support.

Referring by numerals to the drawings, 4 indicates the fixture member of my improved spring-hinge, the same being shown in a rabbet of a jamb 5 of a door-casing to which it is fastened by screws. The fixture is shown outwardly flanged at its ends, and parts of the flanges, separated by kerfs from the remainder thereof, are bent to form guide-lugs 6 in which to slide aleaf-member Intermediate of its ends, the fixture is shown as having a hook-lug 8 at the inner edge thereof, and registrable with said hook-lug is a slot 9 in the hingeleaf 7. The knuckles 10 of said hinge-leaf 7 are crimped fast on a tubular pintle 11 or otherwise rigid therewith, and the knuckles 12 of the other leaf-member 13 of the hinge are loose on the pintle.

Arranged on the pintle, between the knuckles 12, is a spiral spring 14: under tension, its ends being in contact with the leafmembers 7 13 of the hinge, the fixture-member lof said hinge being notched at i to clear one end of the spring.

A rod 15 in sliding engagement with the bore of the pintle 11 has a crook-end 15 terminating in a. lateral offset 15", the rod being held in vertically adjusted position by frictional contact thereof with said pintle. Slight upsetting of what is shown as the lower end of the rod will prevent it from being pulled out of the pintle. In practice it is immaterial which end of said rod is uppermost, but its crook-end must be clear of the hinge-leaves except at such times as it is desirable to separate the hinge-member 7 from the fixture member of the hinge.

The leaf-member 13 of the hinge is shown approximately rightangular in cross-section and fastened to a fragment of a door 16, there being partial butt-facing of said leafmember with the leaf-member 7 of said hinge when the door is closed, as shown by full lines in Fig. 2, but, as indicated by dotted lines in Figs. 2 and 3, the leaf 13 may be straight to provide a full butt-hinge without departure from my invention, as herein claimed, the partial or full butt hinge being applicable to a door-casing jamb having outside molding 17. It is also within the scope of my invention, as herein claimed, to have both leaves 7 and 13 straight and extending in opposite directions from the pintle to form a surface hinge, the fixturemember of said hinge being suitably disposed on fiat surface of a stationary support in the form of a door-casing jamb or otherwise, and the hinge-leaf 13 attached to a door or other swing part.

The engagement of the hinge-leaf 7 with the fixture 4 applied to a stationary support is maintained by the expansive force of the spring 1%, and a fastening screw 18 of said fixture being run out, by a screw-driver engaging its head-kerf through an opening 19 (of less diameter than the screw-head) provided in said leaf, the leaf-slot 9 will be caused to engage the fixture-lug 8, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. This being done, the hinge member 4 of the hinge, the rod is adjusted to bring its crooked and laterally oflset end intermediate of both leaves of said hinge, ,This being done, the pressure of the spring 14 on the fixture-4 through the hingeleaf 7 is overcome and said leaf may be slipped out of engagement with the guidelugs 6 of said fixture, the result being a separation of the-swing-part from the stationary support;

I claim:

'1'. A'hinge' comprising a tubular pintle, a pair of leaves having knuckles thereof engagedbythe pintle, a spring under compression on the pintle and opposed at its ends to the leaves, a rod slidable in the pintle and fashioned atone end for interposition between the leaves, and 'a plate having guides with which one of the leaves has detachable sliding engagement, the other leaf being attachable to a swing-part and said plate Copies of this patent may be obtained for attachable to a stationary support to constitute a fixture thereon.

2. A hinge comprising a plate attachable to a stationary support and provided with end guides, as well as with a hook-lug projecting outwardly from its inner edge, the plate constituting a fixture attachable to a stationary support; a tubular pintle, a pair of leaves having knuckles thereof engaged by the pintle, one of the leaves being slidable in said guides and provided with a slot registrable with said hook-lug, as well as with an opening through which an attaching screw of said plate may be run out to effect an engagement of the leaf-slot with the aforesaid hook-lug; the other leaf being attachable to a swing-part; a spring under tension on the pintle and opposed at its ends to the leaves, and a rod slidable in the pintle and fashioned at one end for interposition between said leaves.
