Vapor Burner. No. 113,524. Patented Apr. n, 1871.
N PETERS. PNOT0 UTNOGRAPHER WASHINGTON. D. C.
iinitili $trtez WILLIAM E. JERVEY, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
Letters Patent No. 113,524, dated April 11, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN PACKING TUBE S FOR VAPOR-LAMPS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAJu E. JEIWEY, of the city of New Orleans, in the State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement .in Packing moved, cleaned, repacked, and replaced.
Prior to the date of my invention the reservoir and burner were connected by a paekingtube, screwed at one end into the reservoir-stand, and at the other into the baselfof; the burner. This tube, whether curved or straight, required the use of special tools to remove and insert the packing, and was very diflicult to clean. The tube, moreover, had usually to be placed in a wise to unscrew it, the pressure and torsion of which process'were very apt to split or bruise the tube.
Now the object of my invention is to obviate these difticulties, and to these ends my improvement consists in constructing the packing-tube with a joint near the bent part when a bent tube is used, and placing a polygonal nut on the straight portion of, the tube, or enlarging a portion of the tube and making such enlarged portion polygonal, in order that it may readily be-grasped and screwed or unscrewed without injuryto the pipe.
' In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a vaporlamp to which my improvement is applied, and
Figure 2, a view of the packing-tube detached.
The reservoir A is mounted on a suitable stand, B.
The naphtha flowsfrom this reservoir, through the stand-pipe a, to the packing '-tube 0 O, which is packed in the usual way, and through which the fluid flows to the burner D. '1
Instead, however, of forming this pipe of a single piece, as usual, I make a joint init at c, besides the usual one at c. 1 I
I also secure a polygonal nut, E, on the joint, near its middle. When it becomes necessary to remove the packing-tube itcan easily be doneby applying a wrench, without danger of splitting-or crushing the tube.
I have found my invention of great practical value, having by it restored to use hundreds of lamps thrown aside as worthless from the clogging'ofthe tubes and y the difficulty of cleaning them.
I claim. as my invention- I The packing-tube, constructed as described, with a joint, and with a polygonal enlargement 011 said joint to permit the tube to be removed or replaced without injury to the tube, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I havev hereunto subscribed my name.
WM. E. JERVEY.
