CLOTHES PIN APPLICATlON FILED JUNE 12, I914.
Patented Apr. 6, 1915 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADOLF WILD, 0F CORONA, NEW YORK.
CLOTHES-PIN. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatlfAoonr WILD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Corona, Long Island, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Pins, of'which the following is a specification. 1
This invention relates to spring compression clampsaiid particularly to such as are used for securing articles of textile fabric. to an extended cord or line, 'as in airing or drying clothes.
The objects of the invention are, first, to provide a device which may be independently attached to the articles and afterward engaged with the cord, or applied to the cord before engaging with the; article.
- Second, to provide means whereby either end may be: released independently of the other, said means being operated by pressure applied by the fingers of an operator. These and other objects,.;.such as simplicity and cheapness of construction, effectiveness andease of operation, are attained by the novel combination'of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which: v
Eigure l is a side elevation of the clamp, partially in section. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same, and, Fig. 3 is a perspective View ilustrating its application.
The clamp consists of two companion or side members 10 and 11. which are in all respects formed in duplicate for economy of manufacture and ease of assembly. On the inner, adjacent faces, near the ends, semicircular, lateral grooves 12 and 13 are for-med,-the same being of a size suitable for engagement with an ordinary cord. Outwardly beyond these grooves, which are formed alike in both members, a tongue 15 is formed on each member at one end only and a corresponding, slot 16 made'in the. opposite end in register with the tongue so as to inter-engage therewith when the two members are in contact and prevent longitudinal displacement.
The ends of both members are preferably curved as indicated orbeveled, the shape being such as to materially aid in applying the device at either end to any object, that. clamp being fully reversible.
Upon opposite sides of the clamp membars are compression springs, each consisting Specification of Letters raieiii. Application filed June 12, 191 i. Serial No. 844,608.
heads or pads 27 and 2S.
ters Patent, is:
of a coil 18, from which extend divergent arms 19, turned at an angle 20, so as to embrace the outside of the members and bent at their extremities 21, in such manner as to clasp the clamp members. In order to hold the springs securely in position it is considered preferable to partially embed the arms'and their ends in the material of the clamp members and near each end as shown.
To release or open the clamp, studs or pins 22 and 23, are secured in the members '10 and Patented Apr. 6, 1915. I
11, respectively, where, passing freely outv through openings 24 and 25 in the adjacent members, they are provided with button In operation, the articles, as wet launchgoods, blue prints, paper, photographs, etc.,
may have the clamps applied and afterward be taken to the cord or line and suspended on it. When it is desired to loosen or re lease either end of the clamp in applying or removmg the same, it isonly necessary to press the pads inwardly. toward each other, thereby freeing that end from whatever it may be engaged.
Having thus described-my invention, what claim as new and desire to secure by Let- '1. A clamp comprising two eo-acting rigid members having engaging surfaces at each' end thereof adapted to engage a cord, means for maintaining said members in Iongitudinal adjustment and independent constraining means. at each end, said constraining means being separately applied on opposit; skies of the clamp.
other, said members being so engaged that clamp comprising two (go-acting duw phcate members each having a single tongue "at one end and a corresponding slot at ,the I the tongue of one member normally enters" I the -slot of the other member,'i'ndependent constraining means near the ends thereof, portions of said constraining means embracmg both of said members, and pairs of opening means opposable to each of said con: straining means also holding said members. in register. j
33% clamp comprising a single pair of double ended co-acting members each having interior engaging surfaces, spring'elements adapted to exert a compressive effect. 3.
near each end of said members and arranged upon opposite sides thereof, and independent manually operated spreading means arranged in pairs, said spreading 1 members of identical contour in name to b means also operating to retain said members 51s for disengaging 'either end. 3 .6
