Description

H. N; SHULTZ.
' Fire Alarm.
No. 113,460. Patented Apr. 4,1871.
Witng yses: M Q [@maw E cm W fiirr.
that l HORATIO SHULTZ, OF MEOHANIOSTOWN, MARYLAND.
Letters Patent No. 113,460, dated April 4, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-ALARMS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern :l
Be it known that I, HORATIO N. SHULTZ, of Mechanicstown, in the county of Frederick and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Alarms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my fuse, with a part of the casing removed.
Figure 2 is a similar View of the casing, with the fuse placed near one side instead of the middle.
Figure 3 is a perspective of the under side of a roof with the fuses in position.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and attachment of one or more fuses to the under side of a roof, the said fuses being made and adj nstcd in the manner and for the purpose setforth.
Fig. 1 represents the smaller and fig. 2 the larger-size.
casing, in which the fuses are to be adjusted.
A designates the casing in which thefuses areplaced, and is formed of 'thelongitndinal section of 'a cylinder having its edges resting on the plate f, the said plate being furnished with flanges 7) so as to hold A in position.
Ihe plate f will be cut in a semicircle at its ends and bent upward so as to fit and close the openings at the ends of easing A.
C represents, two wings extending from plate f. Through said wings nails are driven to secure the easing to the underside of the roof.
.g designates afuse, which may be passed through and project beyond the ends of plate f, near the side of said plate, as seen in fig. 2, or at the center, as in fig. 1.
On each side of the fuse 9 will he placed a fire-cracker, e, (see fig. 1,) which will explode the moment the fire from the fuse reaches them.
In fig. 2 it will be observed that the fuse is placed near the outer edge of the case A, and there comes in contact with the large cracker which fills the casing A.
The casing of my fire-alarm may be made from two feet to ten or more in length, and the explosive material of similar proportions.
In using my fire-alarms they will be secured to the under part of the roof of any building at such localities as may be most exposed to take fire, and any number may be used that will give the desired se'- curity.
In order that the fuse may be more readily ignited the projecting ends may be iucased in shreds of tissuepaper, as seen in fig. 1.
By the explosion of the crackers in the manner described the alarm of fire will be given and measures promptly used to extinguish it.
Having thus described my invention,
Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A'metal casing, as described, when containing one or more fire-crackers and fuse, the whole arranged and operating in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claiu1 the foregoing as my own I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
\Vitnesses: HORATIO N. SHULTZ.
