To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, Emma E. BoLING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Coin-Controlled Vending-Cabinet, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has the following special objects, namely; first, to provide a vending cabinet which shall be suitable for the reception and delivery of newspapers folded in the customary manner in which the same are usually delivered; second, to furnish a construction in my vending cabinet which shall render it substantially weather-proof and capable of protecting its contents until the same shall be removed by the subscriber; third, to provide a coin-controlled mechanism which shall receive the payment from the subscriber, and shall be capable of automatically controlling the number of deliveries of newspapers or periodicals from the cabinet for a given single coin payment thereto; fourth, to provide the means for the reception of the coin payments made to the cabinet in a compartment accessible only to the owner thereof and fifth,to provide means for locking the entire coin-controlled mechanism, so that only its owner may adjust and receive the payment therefrom. The practical intent of my said objects is to arrange a construction which shall be capable of automatically vending in a series newspapers or perio heels in a substantially uniform size or character to a regular subscriber for the same, at whose place of delivery my vending cabinet is intended to be maintained.
The objects of my invention are accomplished by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, hereby made a part hereof, in which- Figure 1 is a view of my coin-controlled vending cabinet, taken partly in front elevation and partly interior elevation, with portions of its door broken away to show the coin-controlled mechanism and with its lid raised for the same purpose; Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section through my vending cabinet, showing the relation of the compartments respectively containing the coin-controlled actuating mechanism and containing the periodical to be vended; and Fig. 3 is a detail howing the construction and method of mounting the dial, which governs the coin-controlled mechanism.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, 1 is the cabinet proper, having in front the shallow mechanical compartment 2, and in the rear thereof the vending compartment 3, both of which are completely covered by the lid 4, secured to said cabinet 1 by the hinge 5, capable of being opened by the thumb lift 6. The spring catch 7 is borne upon the angleiron 8, secured by rivets 9 to the lid 4 and is normally flexed outward toward the front of the cabinet. As the thumb lift 6 is depressed inclosing the lid 4, said spring catch 7 engages the curved deflector 10, secured by rivets 11 to the door 12. The said spring catch 7 is provided with a slot 13, which, as it is inwardly deflected by the deflector 10, drops over the ratchet-lug 14-, secured upon the ratchet-disk 15, thus automatically locking said lid down against the lifting actuation of its spring hinge 5, until said spring catch shall be released by the egress coin as hereinafter described.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 in connection with Fig. 3, the partition wall 16 has secured thereon by rivets 17, the stud-post 18 hearing at its outer end an integral stud-pin 19, upon which is mounted said ratchet-disk 15, which is prevented from leaving its bearing by the washer 20 and retaining nut 21 threadedly secured upon the outer end of said stud-pin.
A rectangular punching bent inwardly from the material of the ratchet-disk 15 forms the coin-track 22, and the flat, rectangular section coin-tube 23 is secured internally over the coin-slot 24, through which the coin is paid which controls the actuation of the delivery mechanism. Upon its egress from the coin-tube, the coin drops to the position indicated by the dotted circle 1, resting upon said coin-track and against the ratchet-lug 14. In the plunger socket 25 internally secured upon the wall of the cabinet 1, is fitted the spring plunger 26, provided with the spring 27 imprisoned between said wall and the push-head 28, and said spring-plunger bears at its inner end the coin-head 29, of the same radius as the coin which controls the actuation of the mechanism. Upon pressing the push-head 28 the coin, being pressed against the ratchet-lug 14, rotates the r spring catch said ratchet-lug, finally permitting the coin to drop off the coin-track 22 into the bottom of the mechanical compartment 2,wvherein the coins are collected. The ratchet?treadle34 has securedthereon the ratchet-arm 40, operating in the arc-slot 41, cut-in the partition wall 16. Upon the flange 41 0f said ratchet-arm is secured the st d-pin42, whic h forms the lower bearing of the pawl-lever 43, whose upper end is provided with the pawl 44, adapted to actuate the ratchet-teeth 45 on the periphery of the ratchet-wheel 15. The pawl-lever 43 is piercedby the slot- 46, in which slides the fixedspringbolt 47 mounted in the bracket 48, secured by screws 49 to the partition 16, saidspring bolt being actuated by the compressionspring 50, also fixed in said bracket so as to constantly force said pawl-lever against the ratchet-disk 15. A spring stopk ratchet 51 is secured by rivets 52 to the wall of my cabinet on the side of said ratchetdisk opposite to saidpawl-lever, so that said disk may not turn except as actuated in the one direction by said pawl-lever.
The particularstyle of my invention-illustrated in the drawings is intended to vend 6daily, papers for one week, and to be actuated by a dime, but it is obvious that the mechanism may have its actuation controlled by another coin and with another receptacle number, or ratchets corresponding to a similar number of deliveries maybe substituted forthe arrangement shown Without altering the functions or spirit'of my invention.
To operate myvending cabinet, a coin is dropped into slot 24, the ratchet-disk 15 having been set so that the series of deliveries for which the coin pays shall start with 1-, which is the numeral opposite to the ratchet-lug 14, which locks my vending cabinet with the first newspaper of the delivery series, until said coin is put into said slot,
then, upon the subscriber pushing in the springplunger 26, thethen-imprisoned coin 7 from its engagement withcauses rotation of the ratchet-disk 15,, free ing the spring catch 7 and enabling the removalof the first newspaper from the delivery receptacle 3, after which 5 moresuch deliveries may be taken from the cabinet without payment until the numeral 1, oppositeto which is the ratchet-lug 14, is again lifted into position after engaging said spring catch 7, when a similar payment must be niade'before the next series of deliveries can be removed from my vending cabinet by the subscriber, r

trolled ratchet-treadle in said vending com partment adaptedto be actuated by the articles to be vended as they are inserted-into the cabinet; a common lid normally closing said compartments and provided with a spring catch; coin controlled releasing means comprising a ratchet-wheel adapted to engage said spring catch to lock said lid;
an arm secured to said ratchet-treadle and operating in said arc-shaped slot; a pawllever provided with a slot near its upper end, hingedly secured to said arm and adapted to actuate said ratchet-Wheel of said coin controlled releasing means; and a spring bolt secured to the cabinet adapted to guidingly engage said pawl-lever slot to cause continuous engagement of said pawl-lever with said ratchet-wheel, the arrangement of the parts being such that the article, when inserted into the vending compartment, actuates said ratchet-wheel through said ratchettreadle and said pawl-lever.
4. In a vending cabinet, a vending compartment provided with a hinged ratchettreadle and a laterally-contiguous mechanical compartment; a common lid provided with a spring locking-catch normally closing said two compartments; mechanism in said mechanical compartment comprising a fiat ratchet-wheel provided with a lockinglug adapted to engage said locking-catch to lock said lid; a spring-controlled plunger adapted through an intervening coin, to actuate said ratchet-wheel to release said lid; a series of numerals on said ratchet- Wheel and a reading slot in the side of the said mechanical compartment enabling the discernment from outside said cabinet by said numerals of the number of articles which has been vended from said cabinet from a series of articles being vended.
