CONCRETE PAVEMENT.
Application filed February 16, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELBERT F. WILoox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Concrete Pavements; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the 1nvention, such as will enable others skllled 1n the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to concrete pavement, and more particularly to a method of laying such pavement to provide a suitable expansion joint and a smooth and even surface on either side of the oint, and which is adapted to prevent abrasion of the concrete at the joint, and the cracking of the pavement between the oints.
In order to fully explain the joint and its method of construction, I have illustrated various steps in the construction of the pavement in the accompanying drawings, wherein: t

sections of such width that the usual expan sionand contraction may occur without cracking the slabs; the upper edges of the screeds being curved on a line corresponding to the drain line of the street, so that when green concrete is filled in between the screeds, a straight-edge 2 may be moved over the upper edges of adjacent screeds to smooth and shape the surface of the roadway. With the that may depend into a socket 4 opening through the top of the screed and engage a cross-rod 5 in said socket in order that the screed may be lifted out of the concrete Without unduly disturbing the surface of the roadway, and particularly without chipping the corners of the concrete beds -adjacent to the channel formed by the removal of the screeds. After the screeds have been removed, an expansion strip 6, preferably formed of pitch, is placed in the channel with its upper Edge projected above the surface of the roadway, and the channel filled at both sides of the strip with fine concrete 7, which may be worked with a tool. .With the expansion block and fine concrete in place, the latter is tamped'in place and its upper surface tooled to form recesses '8 adjacent to the block. After the recesses are formed and the concrete, both coarse and fine, set, the exposed edge of the expansion block is mashed down into the recesses 8 to form a smooth surface for the roadway.
With my improved method, the surface of the roadway may be sloped to the desired drain curvature by moving the straight edge transversely across the roadway from curb to curb, in contact with the curved edges of the screeds, and the expansion joints built in after the slabs have set. By forming the joints of an expansion strip and fine concrete, a workable material is provided which welds into the coarser body of the slab and enables me to shape the edges of the slabs to receive the malleable expansion member, and thereby obviate uneven edges, that may afterward chip or wear.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is I The method of constructing a concrete roadway, consisting of setting screeds, filling the spaces between the scree'ds with coarse concrete, drawing a straight edge over the exposed edges of the screeds, to smooth the surface of the concrete, removing the screeds to provide channels between concrete slabs, spacing an expansion memher in the channel, filling the spaces on opposite sides of the expansion member with fine concrete, tooling the upper surfaces of the fine concrete along the expansion mem 5 her to form recesses, and mashing the expansion member into said recesses.
