Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LGEQRGE W. TOWER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marshfield, in the county of \Vebster, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Evaporators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is directed to improvements in pans for evaporating cane syrup, and has for its object to provide a pan of this character so constructed that the syrup will be first subjected to a mild degree of temperature, after which it is fed to the pans tobe subjected to different degrees of temperature.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated 1n the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a similar view on line H of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is an end elevation. Fig. 6 is a hori: zontal sectional view on line 6.-6 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a furnace, having extending forwardly therefrom the sides 2, which are held in spaced parallel relation by the brace bar 3, thus forming an outlet 4.
Adapted to be placed upon the top of the furnace is a receiving pan 5, the same being rectangular in shape and consists of wooden 7 sides 5 and a sheet iron bottom 6, which receives the sap from the mill through the pipe 7 where it is warmed and flows through the faucet to the evaporatorpan 8.
The evaporating pan 8 is formed in sec tions having their inner side walls closely fitted and riveted to provide a longitudinal partition 13. Each section is provided into alined compartments 9 and 10 and 11 and 12 by the transverse partitions 14, the compartments 9 and 12being of the same size, likewise the compartments 10 and 11, which are also of the same size, but larger than the compartments 9 and 12.
Leading from the pan 5 and to the compartment 9 is a plpe 15, and through which the sap from the pan 5 is fed to the compartment 9, and from thence through the gateway 16 formed in the partition 1 and through which communication is had from the compartments 9 and 10. Formed upon the partition .lt are downwardly and-inwardly inclined guide-ways 17 and in which is operable the gate 18, said gate being formed from wood and having a handle 19 formed upon its upper end. The side edges of said gate are beveled as at 20, so as to conform to the shape of the guide-ways 17. A similarly mounted gate 21 is provided for the gateway 22 formed in the outer end of the partition 13 which divides the compartments 10 and 11. A gateway 23 is also formed in the partition let which divides the compartments 11 and 12, and operating to close said gateway is a similarly operated and constructed gate 24:-
Leading from one corner of the compartment 12 is an outlet pipe 25, and through which the sap passes to a suitable receptacle, after the same has been subjected to the process of evaporation.
The operation of the device is as follows :The sap from the cane mill is first passed to the pan 5, and from thence it gravitates to the compartment 9, and through the gateway 16 to the compartment 10 where it boils and flows in this state through the gate-way 22 to the compartment 11, it being of course understood that the gates 18 and 20 have been operated to permit this. The sap is permitted to stand in the compartments 10 and 11 Where it is skimmed and the finished product is drained through the outlet pipe 25.
By forming the evaporator pan from heavy galvanized sheet metal and shaping the same so as to produce compartments 9, 10, 11 and 12, said compartments are perfectly fitted and riveted, and will last indefinitely. Further it will be noted that the sap is boiled and skimmed in compartments 10 and 11 which are over the hottest part of the fire; after it is sufiicie'ntly boiled in 11 and begins to thicken it is then drained through a gate-way 23 to compartment 12, where it stands and boils slowly until it is a finished product, when it is drained through the outlet pipe 25.
The sap when passing through the compartment 11 is at a boiling point, therefore the outer Wall of said compartment is higher than the walls of the other compartment so as to prevent boiling over of the sap.
