RAILROAD-TIE.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN IMES, a citizen of the United StatesLresiding at Leavenworth, in the county of Leavenworth and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railroad-Ties; declare the following to be and exact description of Ythe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which vit appertains to make and use the same.
a full, clear,
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in railroad ties and has for its object the provision of a novel means for securing railroad rails to metallic ties.
` Another object of my invention is the provision of a metallic tie which will be particularly strengthened throughout its entire life and thereby prevented from breakage owing to heavy trahc.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a tie which will eliminate the spreading of railroad rails and thus prevent accident caused by said spreading.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a tie which will eliminate the necessity of using the old wooden tieand yet combine the advantages of the woode tie with that of the metallic tie.
With the above and other objects in View I will now proceed to describe my invention in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which` y Figure l is a top plan view of my improved railroad tie showing the same as it would appear withV the rails in place, Fig. 2 is a side view end elevation of my improved railroad tie showing one end thereof partly in section, and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of my imprved railroad tie taken on line 8-3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference l indicates generally my improved railroad tie which preferably comprises the centrally located upstanding rib 2 which terminates at its lower extremity in the lateral extensions 3 and 4 respectively. This tie preferably is composed of a single sheet of material and the central rib 2 is stamped therefrom as will be clearly. seen upon referring to Fig. 3 of the drawings.
Suitable Ueshaped members 5 are provided with the laterally extending flanges which are provided with apertures through which the rivets 7 are adapted to pass by Y Specification of Letters Patent.

means of which the U-shaped members are held 1n place on the tie.
the U-shaped and are adapted to form plugs .which fill the shaped members and the central rib of the tie as will be clearly seen upon referring to Fig. 3
`kuitable apertures l0 are provided in the bight portion of the U-shaped members which are adapted to receive the Shanks of the spikes when the same are in place.
It will be obvious from the foregoing that owing to the construction of my improved tie the advantages of the ordinary wooden tie are combined with the advantages of a metallic tie and it will be apparent that a .tie will be best formed which is substantially imperishable and the only portions thereof which are apt to give out are the wooden blocks and the cost of renewing the same is very slight compared with the expense and material in the replacing of the old type of wooden tie.
It will be apparent that in using the device the blocks are inserted as previously deof the spikes driven through the apertures in the U-shaped members, thus entering into the wooden blocks and binding the rail firmly in place in the manner of the ordinary type of railroad tie.
While in the foregoing I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention I wish it to be understood that I may make such changes in combination and arrangement of parts as may fall within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I/Vhat is claimed is A rail tie comprising a longitudinal rib, formed of a single strip of sheet metal bent back upon itself, flanges formed at the lower edge of the rib, said flanges being continuations of the strip of metal, U-shaped rail securing members the bight portions of which form rail seats and overlie the upper edge of the rib, flanges at the ends of the arms of the U-shaped rail securing members said Hanges lying on the upper faces of the between the arms of the U- i it 2 insane? anges on the rib7 rivets securing the flanges -for v'retaining rail securing spikes in piace on both the rib and U-shaped members toin the tie. 10 gether, and the bight portions of the U- 'In testimony whereof I affix my signashaped members being formed With spike ture in presence of tvvo Witnesses..
